This, along with most of 28 Gun Bad Boy's suggestions, although good tunes, are simply too soft for my liking.

Feel free to insult my low-brow tastes, but I'm looking for the chanting, hoovered-up, hands-in-the-air, Jock Jams side of Hardcore/Rave, more in the direction of Hardstyle than any of the mentioned piano ballads.

This, with more energy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HtyF0jux2Q

In fact (if it's within the scope of this thread), I could certainly tolerate some Hardstyle suggestions. It has to be catchy though - something you can hum along to, not merely a nonstop beat with chainsaws on top, like I hear in all the newer Hardstyle mixes...

P.S. Regarding Ishkur's Guide, I certainly don't depend on it for any kind of accuracy, but I've found it to be a pretty good starting point.

Hope it's ok if I crosspost here, I just realized you all could probably answer the question better than the recommendation megathread:

I've recently gone back to listening to two albums, Movements - Booka Shade and Black City - Matthew Dear and they got me thinking that I know very few electronic/house/dance albums that are actually great in their entirety. So I'd love some suggestions for more house albums that actually work as a whole and not just as a collection of singles and remixes. It doesn't have to be similiar to those two albums though - I loved Daft Punk's Discovery and Justice's Cross, and I'm also a big deep house fan.

That is an excellent tune.

I saw Jon Hopkins at the Royal Festival Hall in London which is basically an all seater classic music venue and many of the songs he played were the symphonic compositions and soundtrack stuff he does. Polite applause between songs and so forth.

As soon as he started that tune a couple of hundred people ran down and had a little rave at the front, it was pretty cool.

Also the video to the original version is cool:

I have lots of...opinions...on synthwave. There is definitely a time and a place for it and a few good artists making it, but it suffers pretty heavily from the low-hanging-fruit phenomenon wherein it seems like every dude who gets his hand a synthesizer suddenly fancies himself a synthwave act. Basically, there's very little creativity in the scene, it all sounds the same, all the imagery is the same, and there just doesn't seem to be any progression. It comes across as feeling like an "easy" genre with a relatively low talent ceiling.

Anyway, Kavinksy is good, and so is Short Circuit. Here's a superb track from a few years ago:

I've been thinking that too, but there may not be enough content out there to support its own thread. I do think this upcoming month may be our best bet to jump on it though with Kung Fury coming out. It's full of synthwave stuff, some of it low effort but also containing things like this.

It's really hard to find good stuff in this genre. Especially with how much there is that is low effort riffs off Jan Hammer/John Carpenter/Tron stuff.

Though in the case of John Carpenter I guess he gets a pass on riffing off his old stuff considering he made it.

I dunno. I agree that there's a glut of mediocre fly by night synthwave coming out (and it seems every week I get a new synthwave act following me on twitter because I follow Power Glove, Perturbator, and Carpenter Brut and they want me to notice them) but I don't think it all sounds the same. There's different types, such as the "Outrun" style made popular by Kavinksy, a weird upbeat synth like Mitch Murder and Com Truise (sort of), the evil cyberpunkish of Perturbator and Carpenter Brut, and the Direct-to-VHSness. of Power Glove.

The one thing they all have in common is they're based on the 80s synth. I wouldn't say Mitch Murder sounds like Carpenter Brut.

And speaking of Power Glove, they put out a new song.
