The unfinished CGI isn't doing me any favors and the pacing didn't sell me on any real sense of dread-- made the whole thing seem like a funhouse ride--but the set design is truly excellent and Del Toro and Hiddleston's cache is enough to sell me. Call it confirmation bias but I swear I can see whatever research Del Toro and people with him must have done for the aborted game "Silent Hills" coming through in some of the sets.

It's funny that you bring up Silent Hills because I was getting serious Bloodborne flashbacks from that trailer.

Movie looks cool by the way, will probably see it even though I don't usually do horror.

The place looks like Cainhurst for sure. Movie probably has weeping ghost brides with slit throats. I gotta say, ghost story horror not being my thing at all, that movie looks rad.

The candy-colored crazy colorful pop-up-book haunted house aesthetic isn't really my cup-of-tea, but I'll give it a shot. To me it looks too much like a disney ride and as a result isn't very scary-looking (I'm getting flashbacks to that lovely Haunting remake from the 90s). The best ghost stories have a lingering dread and subtlety, and a dark atmospheric mood to ground it. This looks super in-your-face, in a way that borders on silly, not scary.

I'm open to it being a fun ride though, it's really hard to judge a horror movie based on a trailer, particularly one that's relying on lots of CG, most of which probably isn't finished yet.

Your version made me care. I am not sure why or how but it did. She looks so happy to be Supergirl and it's a nice change of pace to the usual agonised superhero protagonist shtick.

Most of the funny bits from the first look didn't really work for me. I did try to add some of the humor though, but the tone of the music I went with didn't really allow it—does the falling fake out count as funny? The way I edited the music didn't give me much time to work with either. The button (I think I'm using the term right) was the only part where I could naturally put a funny/lighthearted moment in.

It's funny you said this is like a funhouse ride, because I remember Guillermo talking about remaking Haunted Mansion. This feels like his own Victorian version. Even the ghosts seem like projections; I hope he is going for that.

What even is the point of making a movie out of a goofy 80s cartoon if you're not going to include the goofy 80s cartoon aspects of it?

At least Juliette Lewis is sinking her teeth into the scenery.

So it's actually Juliette and the Licks?

It's always a weird pleasure for me to watch actors who have been in movies as teens/young adults successfully transition into parent/mentor roles with a new generation of actors, especially if the casting fits and the upcoming actors feel like some form of progeny to the original performers. Then other times you get like a Crispin Glover/Michael J. Fox situation which rocks for other reasons.

I feel that GdT does the "creepy supernatural poo poo happens, but humans are loving monsters" thing really well, based on Chronos, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, so it's kinda disappointing to see Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain being a bit cartoonish in how evil they are (maybe it's the costuming?) based on that trailer. That being said, the movie looks pretty gorgeous and I'll see anything with Jessica Chastain in it that isn't The Help.
