Not sure if your wording is just a little odd here, but just for clarity, Coyote definitely has not entered the court uninvited in the past. 'How we were first introduced to him' was like 10 pages worth of showing blinker stone symbols in the sky and Eglamore bouncing off to escort him and Ysengrin in. Very formal and by the numbers.

Yeah, that tends to happen when you respond to multiple people who are all making different arguments against you. If Annie's friends are truly concerned about Renard being Tony's captive, then why wasn't this a concern for all the years that he was Annie's captive? The response to this was that it wasn't a concern because Annie is good and Tony is bad, and I pointed out that that was bullshit for a variety of reasons. That's not inconsistent, that's just how the flow of the conversation went.

Probably because Annie saw how unethically he was being treated by his previous captures. Her options then were to release him back into his previous prison, which appeared to hold him physically in place by impaling his legs, or take the duty herself. The previous confinement might have been physical painful, as well as physical restricting. She didn't do that to him, and one of his living quarters even had a library.

So maybe lesser of two evils, but he did (unknowingly) murder someone, so release wasn't really an option for Annie to exercise until she thought he was reformed. When she said she would let him go, I don't doubt that Annie was aware that the court would likely expel her for releasing someone who murdered a student, she just didn't care about those consequences to herself anymore.

Well, it's like saying that he was in America, escaped from jail, and was picked up by the FBI, who refused to hand him over. If he made it to Mexico (the forest), then he could be free. But this analogy only works if the FBI treated people better than the prison system in America. :v:

He's a magical fox demon that can kill anyone with eyes almost instantly, how would you like them to deal with him? We know for a fact he's killed both an innocent man and the dragon that helped protect the court. It's not like he killed someone, felt real bad, then promised not to hurt anyone ever again. He killed someone, didn't get what he wanted, and then killed someone else before they locked him in his hole. And he tried to kill Annie when given the chance. Oh he may feel real bad about that too, but only after the fact. Things had gone his way he would have stone cold dropped her.

quote:

So maybe lesser of two evils, but he did (unknowingly) murder someone

No he straight up murdered another sentient being in the form of the dragon whose name I forget, he just waved it off as "That was honorable combat and totally different".In fact killing someone that tries to stop you from doing a bad thing doesn't really get any form of pass. You can think he's fluffy and cute and supportive of Annie or whatever, but he's not fundamentally human and he is very, very dangerous. Most of the people in her life are objectively poo poo, they are just better in comparison to her father.

I think that sounds reasonable and I'll concede on this point. However, I still don't think it's been established that Renard is in any kind of immediate danger: nobody knows that Tony intends him any kind of harm beyond "well he's kind of mean", and Tony doesn't actually have control over him in the first place. For all we know, he could be returning him to the forest where he belongs.

Renard was in prison for decades. He went from that to being under house arrest, and actually found that arrangement to his liking, to the point that he preferred to stay under house arrest rather than be kicked out.

You seem to get stuck on the most literal and thus least insightful interpretation of things, like how you keep going on about how Reynard is "captive" and Annie commands her.

Here you grasp the truth but stop just short of comprehending it. They are indeed chained by the love for their captors. But that love is the only chain. It's a familial relationship, not a master-slave dynamic.

e: To expand a bit, the captor-captive dynamic doesn't work as anything but metaphor because there's no greater societal or socio-economic dimension to their relationship. The comic underlines that Reynard being Annie's familiar is almost wholly unique. The only comparison is Hettie (and Annie to her father).

We've actually seen a relationship similar to what you insist is there. It's between Anthony and Reynard. The familiar dynamic is just an expression of how relationships and family bind people, even against their wills. It's like arguing that A Week for Kat is about how sad it is that people turn to birds.

The problem I have is that we just don't know enough to infer what Tony is going to do to Renard. All we know is that he has possession of his physical form and that he's not the nicest guy in the world. Why are Annie's friends trying to pull off a clandestine rescue? Do they know something we don't, or are they just jumping to conclusions about Tony's behavior like the audience is?

You can read it as the Court having captured Reynard. I think Anthony, more than anyone else, is supposed to personify the Court - so this is the exact same situation that Annie denounced the first time she revealed Reynard.

The assumption that Anthony's supposed to personify the court is still up in the air. There's stuff suggesting it but nothing concrete.

Blackheart

I do think it's clear Annie's friends are jumping to conclusions as much as the readers are expected to. The Court -might- have contacted him somehow (even if this was stated to be almost impossible) to put more control over Antimony's wild behavior, but I believe he has his own reasons for a lot of the stuff he has done in recent chapters including trying to get control of Renard. I'm sure that if the court really wanted to they could have taken him from her earlier without having to bring Tony in.

I wonder if we're getting the sneaking attempt or dinner next week. I'd prefer the second since I really want to see what the Donlans have to say in person. I mean besides "whoa Annie, lookin' good!"

Dear fellas, I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kit, but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big drat hurry. The forest got me into this treehouse called "The Anwyns" and a job helping Khepi. It's hard work and I try to keep up, but my hands hurt most of the time. I don't think Khepi likes me very much.

Sometimes after work, I go to the park and feed the birds. I keep thinking Annie might just show up and say hello, but she never does. I hope wherever she is, she's doin' okay and makin' new friends. I have trouble sleepin' at night. I have bad dreams like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am.

Maybe I should body steal the court medium so they'd send me home. I could body steal Khepi while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense any more. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me. P.S: Tell Eglamore I'm sorry I tried to steal his body. No hard feelings. Reynard.

I seem to recall it being a thing that Anthony was involved in the Surma-Renard plot on the basis of thinking something really ought to be done about Renard, but I might be misremembering. The point is that the two of them have a history, and considering how much Rey hates Anthony, if the feeling is at all mutual Anthony would certainly have a Plan to resolve the Renard Problem as he sees fit.

I think it was only mentioned that "people at the court" wanted to deal with him, so Anthony might be included or not. It was mentioned that Tony was generally not interested/impressed with forest stuff and Coyote. Rereading a bit I also remembered that it was Surma specifically who wished Annie to go to Gunnerkrigg court for education when she kicked the bucket, I forgot that detail.
