Clever Betty
When I was sketching the characters for our game, Ziggy Starfucker told me, "make one a dominatrix, fighting games always have dominatrixes." (Shouldn't that be dominatrices?) Thus I created this lovely lady:

(work in progress)

Such a feminine pose! Such sexy hip-swaying! I do admit, goons, that I didn't come up with that pose myself. I was inspired by the sexiest of sexies:

Awesome man. I'm a total beginner myself and wondered, what tool(s) are you using to create your game?
Also, to everyone: Any tips on where or how I can best produce some simple pixel art for my game? I have a nice simulator idea, I guess, but well - no experience in most of the stuff necessary.

Also, every gif here is gold, seriously. Nice work and very inspiring!

Now there's just a long list of everything else I need, which is basically art, enemies, and hazards. Should be simple, right??

It's really floaty when falling. I think you might have your terminal velocity from gravity set too low.

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

I set gravity really low to see if I could get it to feel like a balloon.

I change the gravity and max speed values just about every every time I reload because I can't decide what I like. I was just happy to get controls working reliably so I can actually make headway on all the other mechanics I need to get working.

I'm also undecided on whether to allow movement while in the air, which might make a slow fall speed more tolerable.

One thing I would definitely recommend is making the balloon bounce more against vertical surfaces. I got stuck in a pit and it was REALLY hard to get out because the balloon stops moving horizontally when it hit a wall on the way up. It would be a lot of fun to bounce the balloon off of the wall and out of the pit.

edit: For example - in this kind of situation, I want to bounce the balloon off the wall to the left and land it on the platform above, but it doesn't bounce enough for that to be possible:

Bouncy physics!

http://xzzy.org/sagdc/a2/

It's still not perfect but a quirk of how I track the mouse vector means you can queue up jumps while midair, and if you release the mouse as you contact a surface you can instantly fling in another direction. It actually feels fun to me.. I might have to hack in more tolerance so you don't actually have to be in contact with the ground because it's a little too precise right now but it's a lot more playable than it was this morning.

I don't know if you start *just* inside the wall, but on your first jump if you try to jump backwards ( left, whatever, side-scrollers always go right ), you end up in the wall until you jump back out.
I spent way too much time playing bouncy metroid at work today.

Yeah, Sprite Lamp and Spriter Pro are both useful tools (Gonna be gettin' the commercial versions friday), AGFPro is alright so long as you understand it's not so much a game engine as a drag'n'drop/spraypaint constructor for Unity3D worlds, but the DLC packs are an easy source of mostly royalty free sounds, tunage, and the like, allowing you to throw something together quickly. Not so chuffed about the engine end of things (I've already mentioned AGFPRo is mostly a tool for quick level design, and GameGuru apparently doesn't take very well to asset importing, which is unsurprising since it's basically FPS-Creator 2015).

Basically, seems like it's a "first time learner" set, with the sprite tools and resource packs being the most useful of the lot.

EDIT: Forgot to mention a 1 year license for Stencyl is definitely no joke at the price for the whole bundle. 1 year Indie license would normally be $99 , and, while I haven't tried Stencyl, I know quite a few folks recommend it for simple stuff.

thanks!! it's pretty fun, chipping away at it in downtime at work. i started off using stencyl, which is blocky and kind of frustrating if you want to do anything more complicated than space invaders. so i switched to gamemaker, which uses (some) similar language and i'm finding that pretty straightforward. basically every time i've had a question about how to do something, i've punched it into google, and there's been pages of results on how to make it work.

as far as pixel art goes, i've been using piskel - http://piskelapp.com (someone else mentioned it much much earlier in the thread, and i've found it pretty great. free, too!)

In the same tier AGK 2 looks good for development with coding knowledge. I was having a look through it and you can do quite a lot with BASIC programming. It has C++ as well but that's of zero interest to me. Other than that the Sprite software you mentioned looks pretty drat good. The bundle seems pretty well timed. I might have a go if I can wrap my head around AGK2 quickly.

Apparently some of the content licenses in the bundle require them to only be used for RPG maker games, which is dumb, but I'm not going to complain too much since I'm happy with the sprite related tools.
