Today I realised that the non-commentary shows have one real downside: You can clearly hear the wrestlers in the ring, and that unfortunately includes Honma. Seriously, when he's trying to catch his breath in between moves he sounds possessed. Yes I know, destroyed vocal cords from hardcore wrestling, but man, he is painful to hear.

If Nakamura doesn't return, I'd do Anderson and Ishii as the top two because any two of Ibushi/Styles/Tanahashi can beat those two (or lose to them) with little issue. Okada could lose 2-3 times and get his wins back at any 2-3 of the finals/Destruction/KOPW/Power Struggle.

This is true and follows the MO of many G1s, I just feel it's best to protect your champ as well as possible especially in this case when he just had his huge win against the #1 heel after being in a bit of a tailspin during the spring.

Shibata/Makabe was a pleasant flashback to the bomb-throwing sprints that were many of last year's G1's best matches. I think the matches getting more time this year has on average been worse for match quality. There's no good reason for matches like Goto/Yujiro to be going over ten minutes, either in or out of kayfabe.

there is no incentive to go out of your way to watch 3-4 hours of wrestling every other day when half the card has no implications on the tournament and half of the scheduled singles matches aren't so great on paper either. 2013 G1 had multiple shows of the year a couple days in, 2014 had lots of surprises and well rounded shows and this year has had maybe 2-3 truly good matches of note so far. I hope the August stretch is as good as it looks.

I always watch the undercard matches with the young lions because all of them are really good. That does mean seeing a lot more lovely Ryusuke Tamagotchi than I'd like tho

I'm kind of surprised how often they are letting Shibata win. They never do anything meaningful with him. I really like he could be a credible finalist, even if I know deep down he won't be. Infact, I would book Ishii/Shibata. That match would be my kinda poo poo.

shibata is currently my favorite wrestler to watch. i think okada and nakamura are "better" in the sense that they are so good at everything, but shibata is 100% unique. there hasn't been a singles match he's done that i didn't thoroughly enjoy. obviously some are better than others but i love everything about how he puts on matches. i'm still bummed out he and goto didn't get a longer tag title run and i hope he gets a real main event feud soon. or, they could just do shibata vs goto every other event because i love, love, LOVE their "we are best friends who love to punch each other sometimes" thing. i don't remember which show it was, but that one event that took place at that partly outdoor stadium where it was POURING rain on some of the seats, they had that match where they went at each other like mad the entire time, then at the end they carried each other out. one of my favorite things in wrestling ever. shibata and goto, fighting bros
