LET ME EXPLAIN TO YOU WHY YOU ARE WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING
The plot of B/W is pretty interesting. I mean, Plasma's full of poo poo, of course, but it's revealed to be the ignorant army of a gigantic, would-be-world-emperor, so whatever. The main thrust is that poor N is basically a kind of Aspergy kid raised in almost total isolation from humanity, and indoctrinated into this rigid ideology in order to eventually assume the position of cult leader/"king" of Plasma. He gradually does come to realize the ideology is full of poo poo as he travels around and meets Pokemon, and battles you, the protagonist. But I can understand the kind of cult mentality that is hard to break out of even when the debunking evidence is STARING YOU RIGHT IN THE FACE. N's probably the best antagonist in the series. Not a hard bar to clear, though.
I also really like Colress, because he's technically a bad guy, but doesn't really give a poo poo about Plasma at all. It's hilarious. He's just all :science: all the time. He joined Plasma to do more science and get funding for science things. He rules.

The Galactic plot is probably the best in terms of pacing, although of course it culminates like crazy after the 7th gym.

villain ranking
1. N individually
2. RBGY/FRLG Team Rocket - maybe it's nostalgia, or maybe it's that the series needs to return to its roots and have the protagonist just battle rear end in a top hat gangsters
3. Cyrus - a pretty anime archetype, but kinda scary for his utter lack of empathy
4. Colress - :science:
5. Team Galactic - I loooooove their outfits. Those bowl cuts.
6. Giovanni - not much character development, but so cool. Just the coolest.
7. Archie - his design is awesome
8. Team Aqua - they are pirates
9. Team Plasma mk. 2 - also pirates, less sanctimonious
10. Team Flare - they loving Vogue, it's wonderful
11. Team Magma - pretty stupid uniforms, but they use Houndours and Numels, so they're all right.
11. Ghetsis - generic evil villain, only notable for how utterly monstrous his treatment of N was
12. Maxie - eh, he's the same as Archie, but with a worse design (and expanding the land is clearly inferior to Waterworld)
13. Lysandre - boring. boring. boring.
14. Team Plasma mk. 1 - the doofiest uniforms and ridiculous hypocrisy. gotta give some of them credit for reforming and becoming good guys two years later. :unsmith:

The plot of B/W was okay. It felt hokey, but not in a way that sucked me out. Y was such an un-enjoyable ride that by the time it tried to dump an entire plot on me, I just mashed A and tuned out. You can't have nothing of any particular relevance happen until like the 7th gym. That's too late! The simplicity of Gen I and II is much appreciated in every subsequent playthrough. But hey, I subscribe to the dead Raticate thing, so I'm probably wrong about most things. That line in Cerulean where he says like "You already won, lay off" is just too weird.

I just think people often think way too much about incidental bits of dialogue in games, more so in the older days of gaming where the translators played fast and loose with localization and text limits and whatnot.

Although, Blue or Gary complaining when you beat him is just the standard arrogant bully complaining when he gets beaten schoolyard type dialogue.

There's nothing wrong with a simple/stupid story, as long as it doesn't get in the way. I always feel like Y/Z gets in the way.

Mysterious Cat Country

Because of this thread I actually started a new game in Y since I honestly couldn't remember the plot (and also wanted Pikachu adventures of my own).
I've just cleared the first visit to Lumoise City which is where the main storyline begins to rear it's ugly head and Lysandre is so obviously evil it's laughable.
It's a shame too, because the game starts off with a fairly decent premise - here are your friends and neighbors, they all have different things that excite them about the world of pokemon, lets go on and adventure together! Shave off the whole Team Flare bit but keep AZ the Giant and it still would have been a good game without having to stick to the repeatedly rehashed "kid saves world from evil organization" thing.

Really, the only thing worse then Team Flare are the rollerskates. I know they wanted a way to show off the 3DS's sweet circle pad but it's surprisingly hard to control. Going back to that after ORAS was more then a little frustrating.

Also, I caught a shiny Minun on route 5 so thanks for that, thread. :toot:

I know. Game Freak, making the main leader of team flare so blatantly loving obvious was bad. I mean really. Bright red hair, a trait ONLY on the evil team? Having him rant about freedom? Kids aren't that dumb. Make it a surprise! On topic, what exactly is team rocket's goal?

In Gen 1? Money and power. Shockingly straightforward, right? They're literally just the Pokemafia.

Wasn't it something to do with Gyrados being worth more than 'worthless Magikarp'? They were broadcasting a radio signal from Mahogany town to drive the Magikarp in Lake of Rage mad and make them evolve.... IIRC the Red Gyrados was just sort of an incidental thing not related to the story, just more of a 'ohey shinies are a thing now'.

That red Gyarados was bad-rear end, what more reason do you need? I' m glad they used an awesome shiny sprite to show that feature off instead of one where you can barely tell the difference.

Actually, you know what evil organization really worked? Team Cipher, from Pokemon Colosseum. They were not only as vile as Gen 1 Team Rocket, but they were also a lot more competent, despite how wacky a lot of their Admins were. And Nascour, Evice, and Ein had some pretty interesting designs.

Plus, what really hoped sell them to me was just how difficult that game was compared to..well, just about every other Pokemon game ever (though I never played XD). The bosses used good combos and everything, so that also helped sell them as a credible threat.

The best part about Team Cipher is how they outsourced the stealing to a dumber group. That's some classy villainy.

Kicking, because if it's good enough for Jean-Claude Van Damme, it is good enough for me.

also AGREED that Team Cipher is the actual best set of villains in all of Pokemon. Although if we're going non-mainline, I liked Dusknoir from Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky a lot. but yeah, Pokemon Colosseum and XD had their flaws, but they were still really cool experiments, and I believe the last time I played one of them was only a year ago. I mean, in XD you get to live the dream and start with Eevee. Granted, this is Gen III, before the additional 3 eeveelutions came around, but those aren't that good anyway. I loved having the option of Umbreon/Espeon/Vaporeon/Jolteon.

Like, I know that they couldn't just convert every pokemon's Special stats into SPATK across the board, but it sucks that several pokemon that were decent in Gen1 wound up sucking for literal decades due to receiving the wrong stat for their movepools.

my favorite bit about that was that even after the physical/special split Flareon couldn't learn the strongest physical fire move for two full generations. Meanwhile Gyarados went from cool-looking but lackluster to an absolute monster with a weird secondary typing that it didn't get a single move from (unless it evolved from a dream magikarp, in which case it can bounce)

Move tutors are back in ORAS so you get bounce, sine Game Freak decided only gen 6 Caught/raised can be used online. But yeah there were all sorts of stupid design things from gens 1-6.
