The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya trip report. Binged the first 5 episodes according to the broadcast order. Yeah, this looks good. I'm not going to spoil anything for anyone who is as ignorant as me, but a certain moment in episode 00 tipped me off to this being a wild ride and each episode after only confirmed it further. Gonna be fun seeing this to its end.

I've just finished Hyouka, and while I'm confident saying it's one of the best shows I've ever seen, there's also bits of it I found really frustrating.

The good: as mentioned a million times, it's loving gorgeous. The characters are great, the humour consistently made me laugh out loud, and the mysteries managed to be presented in a way that made them interesting and suspenseful. The sound design is also really good, something I'd noticed in the K-On film. I also love how messy Satoshi and Mayaka's relationship is (which ended up feeling particularly realistic) and how innocent Houtarou and Chitanda are, plus the differences between their upbringing which pop up frequently.

The bad: there's a serious lack of emotional payoff in the resolution for all these cases, which really bugged me. This is a pure personal preference obviously, but stuff like Chitanda's uncle never being found, and the funeral being reduced to a one-line mention a full cours down the line or Kudryavka's Order never actually being made really annoyed me, because it felt like the show just dropped those plotlines instead of fully resolving them, which was oddly out of line with how the actual plot points (Chitanda's love for her uncle, Tanabe's desperate attempt at getting Muneyoshi to draw) were presented. And yeah, I wanted a saccharine, feel-good resolution to everything, because that's why I watch highschool anime.

More than anything else, though, I hated that it ended. :( I'd watch another 200 episodes of them just hanging out and interacting, especially to undo that horribly bittersweet ending.

you can chalk much of that up to the fact that it's adapted from a series of novels and that they never actually adapted all of them. many sacrifices were made, among which was a definite end

Edit: Also, there was only half as much ♫Gatchamaaaaaaaan~♫ and that won't do.

I will say I do enjoy the shadow girls, just because sometimes they provide some insight, and other times they go off on a conplete non sequitur which I would have to think very hard about whether it connects to the episode at all.

I'll say this: as much as I absolutely hate it right now and dislike being suckered into caring for these characters, the ending of Hyouka is absolutely perfect. It's completely in tune with Houtarou's overall arc throughout the show and I really don't think they could have "ended" it better.

The only thing that bugs me is that it feels like Chitanda's bit about Kamiyama being her place and her deciding to stay there despite the lack of prospects or interesting things to do was tacked on at the last minute. There's aspects of it in the way her and Houtarou's worlds intersect so in retrospect, it doesn't feel like it comes completely out of left-field, but it was still very abrupt (although it's in line with part of the show generally being about growing up). I'm guessing it was a much bigger part of her character in the novels than it ended up being in the show.

Anyway, thanks to Mentat Radnor for making me watch Hyouka. It's really good and everyone else should watch it too.

I watched my five episodes of Ping Pong. The animation has some neat tricks I don't ever see much of elsewhere. The novelty of it however isn't enough to compensate for the fact that I don't really like any of the characters or feel like there's much forward momentum to the story. I also don't like the art style in general, because I am a huge baby.

Funi's subs being out of sync with and over the Japanese subtitles was annoying, but it was kind of fun whenever the Mandarin and Japanese I understood overlapped. Seeing how sentences get translated between three different languages was quite a trip.

Also, it's really weird how much product placement is in this show.

Only up to episode three so far, after i decided to just start from the beginning again--when it was airing i only got through 1 and a half episodes because i kept procrastinating, even though i really liked those 1.5 episodes!

Anyway, it's a lot of fun as well as being pretty stressful. There sure are a lot of people to keep track of, thank god it gives you nameplates for them.

Edit:
I'm happy to see people enjoying Gatchaman, Hyouka, and Kyousogiga since i love all those series. I'm on episode 6 of my own personal Hyouka re-watch right now and i'm falling in love with it all over again.

I'm two episodes into Otome Youkai Zakuro and it's super fun! The setting is the only unexpected thing about it, but the characters are all so lively and perfectly suited for each other that it's a treat to watch them do anything. I feel like Zakuro is going to steal all the action, which is kind of a bummer...also she looks way better without her bangs, wtf!

I have finished my three episodes of Giant Robo. It's really great! It reminds me of Pluto. They both take a silly old children's robot cartoon and do it in the most respectful, classiest, highest-quality way they can. Three episodes in they've only shown three of the Magnificent Ten, I can't wait to see the last seven. Gunrei's face is too far up on her her face.

I'll definitely be continuing Giant Robo. I'll probably finish sometime this weekend, I'll post a new list then.

I got to episode 3 in Katanagatari and it's good. I can't say there's much to its visual storytelling, but the actual story itself and character designs are neat. I do think the show's style shows more in its flashbacks and action scenes, but some of the character stuff is nice, too. The way Yasuri wraps Togame's hair around him is really cute. Yasuri is definitely a great character, in that his shallow personality and thinking belie something more menacing. Or I'll see, anyway.

Also, the story has kind of settled into a formula and I'm interested in how it'll shake things up.

The entire point of Touga's character is at first glance he looks like some kind of gallant knight sort of character, but he's really just a manipulative rear end in a top hat.
