I wonder how well 3x Black Sun Ace with upgrades would work, since they have an EPT. It's a shame there isn't really a decent 2-point EPT they can use, otherwise you could run four.

I considered a 3x Black Sun Ace list with predator and then Torkil Mux with an autoblaster turret so you can proc the double predator, but I don't know if i'm ready to lose that much jousting efficiency.

One of the players I consider pretty good in our local meta said that swarms flown erratically are his greatest fear, and I think the K-fighter's huge advantage is the ability to spread out and change direction in a hurry. Two 1-hards get you turned around without the need to take a stress or move 5 or 6 shiplengths away. It also has a lot of green- 1 and 2 banks and 2 straights are all green. Having both a 5k and 4k makes your K-turn harder to block.

By flying out and going everywhere but keeping the arcs on the important parts of the board, you can really force bumps and make arc dodgers really work- though I never played a legit arc dodger in this tournament.

Yeah, in the abstract. It's just where it fits in a list- gotta get the points somewhere else.

Has there been any information on how the Hounds Tooth tile will work in regards to margin of victory? If you blow up the mothership but not the pup, do you just get points for everything but the title?

The initial pilot is still alive, but I don't see how else to work the points.

I think you'll get full credit for the kill, but that it'll be totally possible to kill 100 points and still lose to the Pup, so you end up with a 100-100 win or loss. Kinda like how Corran killing Fel's Wrath in the end phase and getting killed in the following turn results in a Rebel 100-100 win.

This happened to me on Saturday - Bossk was my last guy, Bossk was killed, deployed the Pup, then the Pup ended up killing the last enemy ship. According to the TO and (he said ) the tournament rules, if the Pup is the last ship standing on the map, it's a tie but the player controlling the Pup wins, regardless of initiative or MOV.

Technically yes, but the Star Trek version is bad, so don't play it unless you are actually addicted to Star Trek. If you're actually addicted to Star Trek you should probably seek help instead of playing with plastic spaceships.

Okay, at least I know I'm not going crazy!

(I was playing it because someone else brought in their collection and was running demos, that's a pretty good reason to at least try something out in my opinion.)

Yeah Star Trek is nowhere near as well thought out as X-Wing. No reason not to play a demo, though, yeah.

So actually asking opinions here, which would you run and why? I'm not entirely sure I'll end up getting three new X-wings so soon, but I'm equally unsure I'll be getting a K-wing any time soon either. Probably depends on whether there's actually a solo X-wing pack when I get them.

Miranda Doni [Twin Laser Turret, Extra Munitions, Flechette Torpedoes, Cluster Missiles, Luke Skywalker, Proton Bombs, Munitions Failsafe] (56)

A-Wing
Gemmer Sojan [A-Wing Test Pilot, Proton Rockets, Munitions Failsafe, Push the Limit] (29)

Luke isn't worth 7 points, because you can't use him with the Twin Laser Turret, you can only use him to conduct a primary weapon attack after a Twin Laser Turret attack misses. Twin Laser Turrets don't miss that often. I would go with a Recon Specialist instead, so you can get two focuses to use on your double-attacks. That frees you up 4 points. I'd turn that into a pretty much 1:1 upgrade to Tycho. I personally don't like the idea of a low-skill Z with Prockets, so I'd drop those to give Tycho either Predator or Outmaneuver, too, but that's more personal taste.

I'd be careful about loading that much ordnance on the K-Wing-they're durable, but they're not THAT durable, and in any case you're never going to be able to burn through that much ordnance-especially if you're planning on using the TLT to regenerate shields.

Edit: Also, you know what's hilarious? Conner Nets. Throw them on some cheap low-skill Y-Wings, maneuver them right next to some expensive ship, and drop the templates directly on their base for some good old fashioned fun.

i don't have my cards in front of me, but when is the check for ion tokens? Is it when movement dials are assigned, or is it when the movement dial would otherwise be revealed? I can see it making for some very bad days if it is the latter.

I could see some creative formation flying dropping a chain of Conner nets for a large ship to continually hit.

Alrighty, I've switched things around a bit, I like the idea of the net because anything that fucks with movement is good in my book.

Miranda Doni (49)
K-Wing (29), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Concussion Missiles (4), Recon Specialist (3), Conner Net (4), Munitions Failsafe (1)

Tycho Celchu (38)
A-Wing (26), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Predator (3), Hull Upgrade (3), Outmaneuver (3)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

I'm torn on what missile to use on the K-Wing to be honest. I dumped the torpedo because I don't need both torpedoes and missiles, as fun as it sounds.

I'd also consider Advanced SLAM over Munitions Failsafe since it drastically increases your ability to employ Connor Nets where you want them to go when you can move, SLAM, and then use an action to drop one. In fact you could probably try and use Miranda as a dedicated bomb truck by dropping Concussion Missiles for something like Cluster or Proximity Mines along with the Connor Net, keep Tycho with the recommended Autothrusters and everything else, plus one Z for moral support.

edit; Alternate answer is Miranda and her upgrades plus 2x Gold Squadron Pilot w/Twin Laser Turret and R2 Astromechs.

Only problem there being I just have the 2 TLTs you get with the K-Wing so I'd just switch Miranda over to an Ion Turret to continue the fuckery with people's movements.

Miranda's ability works better with a TLT, so you can regenerate shields and still get a normal strength attack. The Ion Cannon Turret is better on one of the Golds.

So here's something I stumbled on earlier today. A "total conversion" to turn X-Wing into a cooperative boardgame-style campaign against an AI controlled Empire.

Having sat down and given it a look my thoughts at a glance are:

1). This is obviously a labor of love. For being fanmade homebrew the production values are quite high. It comes with templates for player sheets, various decks of cards, and new terrain and obstacles like minefields and ion storms.

2). The campaign structure is interesting in the sense that everyone only controls a single ship which they can then expand through upgrades and abilities with XP, accrued through shooting down enemy ships, assisting other players, achieving bonus objectives, etc. This includes being able to take multiple upgrades and EPTs and also purchase unique pilot abilities from official cards to make your own. It's also set up so that players are only ever going to be flying small ships...there's no Fat Han or Super Dash stuff here, everyone starts out in an X-Wing or Y-Wing and you can pay some XP to switch out to an A-Wing, B-Wing, or HWK later on if you want.

3). The AI setup for Imperial pilots seems like the thing most likely to result in things breaking down because it looks rather cumbersome. Basically every enemy ship follows a kind of IF/THEN decision tree based on things like where the nearest enemy ship is, whether it's in arc, whether it's flying towards or away from the AI ship, etc, and then some dice are rolled to determine what the ship's movement is based on those criteria. The designer tries to simplify things a bit by having enemies stick to flying in formation until they're broken up by dogfights but even then in seems like a lot of measuring, dice-rolling, and chart-consulting for a game that recommends you have 2-3 TIE Fighters for every participant and the number of players ostensibly goes up to 6.

Still, if nothing else it's worth a look.

There's an android app that automates an AI process for solo practice, would probably streamline the game play a lot.

Ions only happen at the beginning of the activation phase. If you have a dial down you still move normally.

Oh yeah that's the one Honter won. I think it was only the other player cheating cuz at this point using hands to "pre measure" wasn't yet considered illegal but maybe I'm remembering wrong. Still, we all tightened up about using hand gestures to do so sometime during the summer.

E: we also told them they should definitely use a simple mat for viewing. I think only simple star field mats should even be considered for that purpose.

If Bill and Ted brought an 18th century admiral into the present, that guy would get around the premeasuring rule by using a sextant to measure the angle and do some trig.

Actually that would be awesome if someone did that in a tournament and got that explicitly banned in the rules.

Are they using those little pieces of black tape to hold down that atrocious space field or is that another sneaky way for them to mark distances in order to get around the no premeasuring rule?

The using fingers to mark possible future positions was never cheating until sometime during the summer. Target locking "pre measuring" is still legal. I think they were commenting on the former but like I said I forgot when that rule was instituted so he may have been cheating at this point. (Note that Paul has always done that, looking at old world's footage. He remarked about it during the summer too.)
