Might as well post some other interesting Eva music while I'm at it.

Here's a kickass track that never got used. It was composed for EoE I think.

Gundam Wing has pretty good music, but it's going for something entirely different than what Eva's music was.

Yeah I actually got a letter here official from Gainax studios it says "sorry for the wait guys. Except In Training, gently caress him he's not getting poo poo"

Gundam Wing's OST was composed by the same guy that did Shadow of the Colossus and I like both of them a lot, I will have to listen to the music in Eva more closely if I do a rewatch.

Different sounds different atmospheres different goals

EVA music does a good job of creating isolation and desperation in your own head, or in this case Shinji's. It also has its grandiose orchestral moments but I always found it stronger with poo poo like the Rei themes and whenever Shinji is mulling stuff over, all the self-doubt and self-pity really gets hammered home with some of the music surrounding Shinji https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isaQklNLmlQ

Though all the jazzy stuff was really sick too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hazgmKTJniM

On the other hand SotC is like in the top 10 video games of all time and the soundtrack is loving immaculate

The thing about Eva music is that it's a weird mix of J-pop, Godzilla-ish music, quieter...moody music I guess (Tracks like Separation Anxiety or Borderline Case are what I'm thinking about here. Not quite sure how to describe them), a million different riffs on Fly Me to the Moon, and Ode to Joy.

It's a weird combination, though it always fits what the show is going for IMO. Shadow of the Colossus music is good too- much, much better than the game it's from, in fact.

The EVA music guy also did the OST for Kimagure Orange Road.

...bah nobody remembers KOR. Which sucks 'cuz I like it.

But he did the soundtrack for Bleach!

...but nobody likes Bleach.

What a conundrum.

Gundam Wing's music was really good, though. Not being on its level is hardly a slight.

The eva guy did music for kare kano, who then used the same music back into eva. It's weird.

The only reason why I noticed was because I was splicing in that exact same song in eva videos, and then 2.0 came out and I went "Waaaaaait a minute."

The music in Bleach owns, although I'm not sure how much credit for that is due to the arrangement rather than the composition.

So it just occurred to me, and it seems really obvious in retrospect, that Evangelion 3.0 is more or less a GunBuster sequel since like half of its major plot points are reworkings of stuff that happened in GunBuster.

I mean wow, I feel dumb for not realizing it before. Shinji coming back to Earth after being trapped in space, the time dilation he experiences, even EVA-13 seems to be an evil riff on the GunBuster itself with its dual piloting system thing. The main twist being of course is that everyone is angry that Shinji has come back for obvious reasons, as opposed to the more bittersweet ending Noriko and Kazumi have.

drat I can't wait for the blu-ray to arrive stateside so I can rewatch the movie now with this in mind.

This is an excellent point.

I think also, the curse of Eva relates less to the fandom not growing up and mroe to making Eva keeping Anno from being allowed to grow up.

i had some more thoughts about this. an underdiscussed subtext of eva is how it's an evisceration of japanese society during the lost decade (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Decade_%28Japan%29) and it seems to me that the "curse of eva" in addition to being about what i mentioned earlier (and it being about preventing anno from growing up) seems to be about a contemporary version of this specifically in relation to generation y.... you know, the whole deal everyone bemoans about millennials. perpetual adolescence, hopeless ennui, ubiquitous violence/warfare, no future to look forward to and an inscrutable past to look back to dooming us to repeat the same mistakes that the generation before us made until we get them right...

Pretty good

gently caress me how does no one know about Ritual/Shiki-jitsu? Love & Pop is Anno getting used to live action and the result is loads of interesting goofy shots and camera angles. But Shiki-jitsu is him actually coming back to earth and creating a (in my opinion anyway) stunningly beautiful film with what he figured out I guess. It's shocking that so many Evangelion fans haven't seen it.
