Most maxed-except-UR people lose interest too, or even earlier. "Getting random gear" provides incentive so people don't just buy what they think is their favorite and then quit, so that part certainly should stay. But "do i get anything fun at all?" is just a annoying slog of nothing that artificially tries to extend gameplay and only succeeds in getting people to quit earlier, sometimes before seeing all the good stuff. Every single friend I've pulled into ME3 has lost interest because the game kept giving them duplicate character cards and upgrades for the lovely guns instead of ever getting the one (or two, or three) characters or guns they actually wanted to use. Well, minus the one friend that Origin just decided we couldn't connect to each other ever even with ports open because gently caress you. Though i suspect he'd have gone down that path too. When you've got a hole in your inventory and it doesn't get filled in for additional months, it's just as discouraging as "well I've got everything, so what now?"

tl;dr: Yeah, you want to make it take a little while to get all the stuff, so they stay longer, but there is a limit before it does even worse than if you'd done nothing at all. I hope they strike a better balance for ME4.

I can agree with the UR grind becoming an interest dampening thing. The grind was just so big at that point. I would have to sit down and either do 3 silver matches to earn enough for a premium spectre/arsenal pack or risk doing a gold or platinum match with a bunch of pubbies because all my friends could not play the game beyond silver (git gud, no good gear). At some point I decided to save up 10 million credits before I bought anything to just stave off the disappointment of an hour of work turning into 4 level IV consumables. Before they removed the bi-weekly operations (?) I was really excited every time to do what I needed to do and hoped the rest of the player base contributed. Getting N7 weapons was nice and actually had a modicum of anticipation to them. I always wanted upgrades for the Hurricane for obvious reasons.

Yeah, I really hope they bring back the weekend ops. They gave you something new to look forward to, either in the challenge (anyone remember the one where banshees showed up in every match no matter what?), or just a guaranteed drop.

Oh yeah I forgot about the weekend ops. ME3 multiplayer is so great. Not enough shooters make your team really matter. I guess teams always matter but here you can combine your powers and nothing else really fills it's niche, or has even really tried to. I thought Warframe would but in the end it's all about being an individual tank with a few specific frames.

Destiny tried to do a firefight mode in House of Wolves but it sucked. They had the potential and then they just rotated the same 5 or so fights week to week.

Overwatch is different. I think it's basically 3D FPS Dota.

Operation Silencer. The goal was to kill 3 million Banshees when the previous week's goal was to kill 1 million Phantoms.

Also, Operation Broadside wanted 400,000 Reaper extractions. That was the one that tacked an extra minute onto the extraction wave.

Operation Vigilance wanted 250,000 escort missions. They got 231,456. The punishment was slowing the drone down.

On the one hand, it's nice to see that new players are still finding this game. On the other, :gonk::gonk::gonk: at newbies in collector platinum. Why the gently caress would the leader ready up instead of dissolving the lobby? Did he want to troll the pubbies and gave no shits about his own wasted time, or did he seriously think he was good enough to solo it?

I forget what it defaults to when you create a lobby for the first time, but the quick join defaults to "Any," so it's common to see brand new level 1 players dropping into Gold/Platinum. Maybe the original host left, and the newbies all piled in by mistake.

But then you have the people who struggle through a round of Silver and, after failing on wave 6, silently decide to bump the game up to Gold or Plat. I... really don't understand them.

Exactly as long as you'd think. We were on Goddess, the three of them died within a minute and I exposed myself trying to res one of them in the open, then ended up getting flanked and pincered and pinned when a collector web blocked my path up the stairs. It was so bad I even when I rage-gelled twice I couldn't even get a single button push before I was dead again.

I can usually carry a plat match, so I don't like kicking newbs, but this was just overwhelming.

I am 99% certain that Unknown/Collecters/Plat is the default for new players, though I kinda feel the leader's who got at least 2 promotions already should know about the different difficulties.

I got the Turian Ghost last night and holy crap, it was an immediate upgrade in terms of being able to do Gold, whereas I was dying a ton and doing maybe one Gold every 10 games before. I've got like 10 Assault Rifles, but a Phaeston IX is probably my best one right now, so I'm not doing as much damage as I could be, but this means I'm getting an Arsenal pack every game-and-change now, so that'll change. It's such a turnaround.

Yeah, the TG is p.BA :getin:

The Phaeston is fine for the TG on Gold. In fact, half the time I use it just for fun when I get tired of the Cerberus Harrier's small magazine. The TG's assault rifle bonuses make it worth while.

As to weapons, quit buying arsenal packs and focus on Veteran Packs until your commons and uncommons are all maxed. Don't bother buying the Spectre or higher ones until you have all of your commons and uncommons maxed out, it's a waste of credits and it will take you forever to fill out your inventory. Plus you can still occasionally get rares and URs in the veteran packs.

99 CENTS AMIGO

I finished all my commons about a week ago, and I'm close to done with uncommons, though I started souring on Veteran packs when I kept getting the same character cards and maybe 1 gun upgrade, if that. Now that I'm basically never dying on Gold, I'll start buying them again because, hey, that's 4 Veteran packs per game now.

Counter-counterpoint: getting all the UC Weapon Mods and Gear early on is way more helpful than getting the occasional rare or UR weapon, and make taking on gold or plat a lot easier. Give me a biotic with an Adaptive War Amp V and I'll top-score plat with a predator.

A decently high level grenade gear lets you play the easy cheesy grenade chucking headbutting krogran sentinel and clean up golds without breaking a sweat. So that's an argument for whatever pack will get you those plus consumable capacity upgrades.

I spammed Veteran packs for a while to fill in all my UC characters/weapons/mods but I can't imagine sticking it out for all the UC gear. IME, gear takes forever to drop and if you move onto higher tier packs you're eventually going to start filling up on gold gear which is better anyway. I'd also think the dual bonuses on the gold drops would be more efficient if you're looking for workable gear for several different classes.

tribbledirigible posted:

And have the right consumables to fuel them. I always feel like I don't have enough of the right ones (namely incendiary rounds for like half of the super murder killer/pure cheese builds).

Though in this specific instance, actually having the Black Widow, let alone one of appreciable rank, would help. :argh:

Keep in mind the level Fidel is on though, barely playing gold so far. They have to play two matches to be able to afford one pack. PSPs/Arsenals/Reserves and even Spectre Packs aren't really cost effective until you're playing Gold/Plat regularly.

I was never a real vanguard fan and when I could only play about 4 games before I needed to run off and do something I usually picked the classes that were easy to play: Asari Adept, TGI, Fembot, Geth Inf, Asari Huntress, and Slayer. Occasionally I would use a Salarian Infiltrator with the Krysae and Disruptor Rounds vs Geth but even that turned into a chore if my team was bad.

I've finally made it to reliably being pretty good at Gold, only dying rarely, which means I'm alternating a Spectre Pack and an Arsenal Pack every game (it comes out to a little over 160k credits every two games). I like the Ghost a lot, and at this point I really just need to kick my weapons up closer to Rank X to get even better.

I figure when I get my Mattock to IX or X, or get the Lancer, I'll start alternating Reserves/Arsenal and maybe trying my hand at Plat a bit more (the only time I had successful plats was when I stumbled upon two dudes doing the rocket glitch). I switched from the Phaeston IX to a Mattock VI, and the extra stability/precision has me either leading or coming in second most matches, points-wise, even when I've run out of ammo powers.

What actually convinced me to switch yesterday was these two Russian dickbags who were really mad that I was surviving totally against Reapers (I think they were farming on Ghost?), but not doing enough damage against the bosses, so for like the entirety of Wave 8, they just ran around not fighting. I eventually kited two Banshees to them, and they both got sync-killed, which let me very, very slowly plink away at the last few with the Phaeston. They were going to try it again on Wave 9, so I ran into the middle of 3 Brutes, a Ravager, and a Banshee and got myself proper killed to force them to salvage any credits from the round.

During that forced-solo Wave 8, they started sending me swears in Cyrillic, and one that said "you fail you shot whith BFG when all right so...play you "cool woman torian"!!!!!!".

It was great, but the whole match took like 50 minutes, so maybe it wasn't.
