I built one with logic gate IC in some dumb college lab, but considering that you can buy an arduino nano, like one of the 8 bit MCs for like 2 bux that's the same size as a 555 and can probably, like, blink in more patterns... so?

You can make your light blink in the morse code for FECK YER MAMMY or some poo poo.

MisterOblivious posted:

you've just described a decision i've been trying to make: go get my 556s and mosfets out of storage or order an arduino knockoff so the led strips on my bike can blink "BLINKING LIGHTS BLINKING LIGHT BLINKING LIGHTS" in morse

a single 555 on digi-key is about 75 cents. with a handful of external components, you can set it up to blink an led on and off, and you can adjust the rate to whatever you like assuming you have the required passives.

a single attiny85 on digi-key is about 85 cents. with no external components, you can program it to blink an led at any speed you like, and it can do about a thousand times more stuff than the 555 as well.

they're both 8 pin DIP packages. i know what i'm spending my extra 10 cents on

like, i get the low-level coolness of playing with logic gates and op-amps and rc circuits to make them do what you want. but when you're talking to some kid who wants to get started in electronics, you're mean and stupid if you tell him to go buy a bunch of 7400s instead of an arduino.

BattleMaster posted:

people who call themselves makers are actually a couple steps below actual hobbyists because they need everything spoonfed to them in the forms of arduino-centric tutorials

edit: I looked into the makerspace in my city a couple years ago before I realized how poo poo makers are and the list of equipment was lower in quality and variety than the poo poo I have at home - except for the laser engraver that they did useless poo poo with like etching logos into hamburger patties

you sound like a really unpleasant person to be around, because you apparently poo poo on people's hobby projects when you don't like them, instead of trying to teach them something new or just ignoring them.

you can get one the various avrisps for like 2 bucks on ebay. as a basic electronic tool, i'd put them on the same level as a breadboard

ok i guess i don't know how to express the difference in "a full PC with usb, internet connectivity, capable of running an IDE, a specialized dongle at minimum $2" and "a breadboard" in a way that you'd find germane, but in general I agree with the parts where you aren't lying through your teeth

ok, let's postulate that the hobbyist getting into electronics has no access to a personal computer. you're right, then the cost to get started goes up pretty dramatically.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

aha, but what if the person lives in a cardboard box without electricity?? you can still put together a 555 circuit and run it on a battery, but you need power for your computer! sike! the cost of getting started with avr development now includes an apartment!!

what's the flat-out lie? my opinion that if you are doing electronics as a hobbyist, a $2 avr programmer is as important as a breadboard?

i'm vitriolic cause i gotta make up for ten years of anti-arduino vitriol from people who are apparently angry that the way they do their hobby is different from the way people new to the hobby do it these days.

As state lawmakers across the nation debate the implications of more (or less) stringent oil and gas regulations, Pennsylvania faces a slightly different battle: the continuing fight over a natural gas drilling tax that some argue may have already cost the state over $300 million in lost revenue.1
Pennsylvania remains the largest natural gas-producing state without a severance tax. At least 36 states impose some sort of severance tax, and 31 states specifically levy taxes on the extraction of oil and gas. In 2010, more than $11 billion was generated in the United States from severance taxes alone. Between 10.5 percent and 74.3 percent of total state tax revenue came from severance taxes in at least six states—Alaska, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.2
Severance taxes help insure that costs associated with resource extraction—such as road construction and maintenance, and environmental protection—are paid by the producers, helping to alleviate potential impacts on state and local taxpayers. States distribute revenues in various ways, but typically, most of the collected taxes are deposited into the general fund. Many states also use the extra revenue to fund conservation and environmental cleanup projects and distribute portions of the collected taxes to local governments.
