Faulkner is good, though. The stream of consciousness chapters in the sound and the fury are the only ones in that style that haven't felt like a chore to read to me. i like his short stories better, they have that almost dark comedy cynical bite but they aren't five hundred pages of it Fur20 fucked around with this message at 05:05 on Feb 1, 2016 |

the culminator posted:Thats not the scarlett letter I read that in Jr. High, it wasn't as bad as the book we read after it, The Black Pearl. Worst from High School would have to be the novel one of the science teacher's at the school wrote about how giant scorpions and insects take over the Earth. They came to rule the future because environmentalists went too far and created a clean air machine that over oxygenated the Earth's atmosphere so all in invertebrates got huge and then we nuked them and made them super smart. Weird thing is the teacher that wrote is was HUGELY against marijuana or any other drug use. I took an F on the project because the book report I did for it was just echoing my dad's very valid and borderline vulgar criticisms of the book after I read some of it out loud to him when he asked me why i wasn't reading my book for class.

The Alchemist was the stupidest book I've ever read. It's a whole book that's the author masturbating about how "deep" they are. Edit: Their Eyes Were Watching God was pretty awful too because every character was dumb and naive stretched to the point of absurdity turbomoose fucked around with this message at 06:01 on Feb 1, 2016 |

I went to a public, suburban high school in New England. Every summer our english department would try to assign "current" and "relevant" readings for young adults (aka Dave Eggers and John Green) Zeitoun was actually a pretty good book, but the year we read it was also the year Zeitoun (the protagonist of the non-fiction novel) was arrested for being a crazy wifebeater. Kind of dampened the emotional impact of the book. On the other hand, The Fault in Our Stars was terrible and i'm still kind of mad I had to read it. It's like everything i hate about young-adult fiction distilled into one insufferable novel

also whoever said Nectar in a Sieve, you were right. the only cool parts when one of her kids dies or there's famine or whatever are talked about in the simplest of terms, while an entire page is devoted to explaining what the crop harvest yielded. it may only be 180 pages but that's still far too long.
