I know, with that mindset they'd all be pro-austerity voters that ol' George could snap up in a moment.

EDIT: Also, I'm reading Robert Fisk's Great War for Civilization, which is awesome and makes people like Nick 'Snivelling' Cohen look live even more of a small-minded arse.

I'm not sure what to make of that.

On one hand, state schools are getting better (or independent schools worse) which is a good thing for most people.

On the other, it means that couple from the Telegraph might not have to sell their second home to send their child to a private school, meaning that it will instead have to be expropriated.

And on a third hand, does that mean that Gove has been doing something right? Or has all this happened somehow despite the academies and free schools?

What it probably means is that state schools are getting better at playing the system of targets which private schools have been doing for decades. For example schools now are deliberately classifying new pupils as low as possible so they can claim the biggest possible improvement in their skills.

Well, given that schools are designed to make you do well at tests, it's only reasonable to expect the schools themselves to get good at tests in the process :v:

To answer one-sidedly, though, the EU as it stands is strongly pro-privatisation and while things like the ECHR is great, it's not wholly tied to the EU. Given we also pay into poo poo like the Common Agricultural Policy which almost entirely benefits landed gentry over actual farmers, I'm not too worried about loving over millionaires.

Arent they (our gov) loving with echr stuff tho? i mean if they are already dont you think they will more outside of eu.

They want to, but the fact that they haven't been able to yet would suggest that they're discovering that they can't while we remain in the EU and party to the relevant treaties.

They want to replace the HRA with a weaker British Bill of Rights, but they can't supersede the supremacy of the ECHR, inside the EU or out.

On the one hand. Leaving the EU is bad.

On the other hand, I would like to see Brits whine about how it's the EU's fault for letting us vote ourselves out while the country sinks under the ocean.

Incandescent lightbulbs are poo poo for everything unless you need them outside or to warm up a chemical bath or something.

Compact fluorescent lightbulbs manage to be the worst of both worlds for both.

Not at all. The right wing is a broadish church of people who hate foreign people and others who just don't want to pay taxes but actually quite like their black/asian/european/etc colleagues. Europe/immigration is one of those issues that really fissures the right and has fostered a UKIP feed. The business-type right wingers and the little-englanders are going to tear each other apart.

So is the general take away from yesterday's Birmingham fash demonstration that the fash didn't really show up in any significant amount and West Midlands Police actually dealt with the two groups fairly? They've actually always seemed to be one of the less poo poo police forces in the country (after the PSNI who have been forced into being not poo poo because of how poo poo the RUC were). I should probably try to not be the police defending socialist if I want to avoid the list so ACAB I guess.

Also the lack of self awareness is that article. Libya is a mess. You know, for some reason. I think it was an act of god? Or maybe they're just inherently savage and uncivilised people? While that would be lovely, I'm not sure I'd want to live through the decade or two of Norsefire bullshit it'd take to get there.

Leaving Europe at this moment is a terrible idea because while they are indeed on a rightward march, the people who want out only want out so we can sprint that way instead. I'll take neoliberalism if the alternative is whatever evil the Tories have planned.

Yeah with both the leave and remain camps being argued in rightwing terms either result will strengthen that position more than it will open opportunities for the leftwing reasons for leave or remain. I'd rather stay as a rebuff to the national xenophobia we currently have (and deal with the EU centric xenophobia), especially if the economic case for the EU is weakening itself on its own.

If you could guarantee me a Corbyn (or similarly left-wing) Labour win in 2020, I'd vote leave in a heartbeat, but without the constraints of the EU, the government (and the voters) we're likely to have for the next decade are one terrorist incident away from mining the channel and bricking up the tunnel.

If it ends up going Leave, there will be a brief moment of gloating, followed by an absence of purpose that leads to them becoming an American-libertarian 'not-racist' party wandering in the wilderness and eventually becoming as irrelevant as the BNP.

If it ends up going Remain, they will keep doing as they always have and agitating for leaving the EU through political channels instead of democratic ones at some nebulous point in the future, especially if the result is close like 45% or something.
