So as somebody who's watched this game from a distance I have a couple questions.

1. Weaponry - I know there are shotguns, assault rifles, smg's, pistols, and bolt action rifles. Is there anything else? Are there machine guns? Semi-auto rifles? Revolvers? I'm pretty sure there's a kind of grenade launcher right? Is it a skill? No heavy weapons I take it?

2. Does the game actually have any kind of interesting terrain / places to go? Is it all inside of a story missions only? What I'm saying is that the game appears to be nothing more than your characters running through various hallways. Yea they look like New York city, but for all intents and purposes they seem to be nothing more than hallways with some trash, rubble, furniture, and abandoned cars to hide behind. Are there any really interesting locations? You can't go in most buildings can you?

3. Weapons again. They consist of primary, secondary, and sidearm correct? Are those set in stone in that I can only run with assault rifles in the primary, SMG's/shotguns/marksman rifles in the secondary, and then pistols in the sidearm slot? I can't possibly make use of two assault rifles for some crazy reason, or a shotgun and sniper rifle? How does ammo work in the game? Can you run out?

4. What's the overall Goon opinion on the game so far? I know this is the thread for it and so it will slant towards the positive but the general impressions I get on Youtube is that a fair amount of Youtube gaming personalities that were fanboys of the game are now either completely disheartened by how the game is apparently "boring" or simplistic, or they're still optimistic but not holding their breath. What do Goons think after having played the beta? I enjoy looter shooters to a point but it really depends on how much content they have and how well they're supported, not to mention the availability of gameplay differences. Speaking of which will every player be able to learn every skill/talent/perk? Some of the videos seem to indicate that's the case. So nothing but gear differentiates you?

In any event I'm gonna play it this weekend (have it pre-loaded already) and will reserve judgment following that. Will try to convince some friends to join me. Are their clans/guilds? Squad size is only max of 4 right?

There are LMGs - a M249, and I want to say a Russian made one, a PK? However I don't remember exactly. There are revolvers too, however I forgot the names. There have not been any grenade launchers available in the beta, and I do not know if there will be any in the main game. There are, however, grenades, and a tech skill that shoots a grenade you detonate manually.

Your weapon loadout is Slot A, Slot B, and pistols. You can put whatever combination of non-pistol weapons in A and B. Ammo is category based, pistols have infinite but still requires you to reload. Yes, you can run out if you fire willy-nilly.

Yes, only four people to a squad.

Yes to all of those. In the first beta there were two light machine guns, which had the gimmick of starting out pretty inaccurate on the first shot, but getting more accurate as you keep holding down the trigger. There were also two variants of semi-auto rifle, one burst-fire rifle, and one revolver that I can remember. The grenade launcher was one of the skills, featuring infinite ammo but a lengthy reload.

So far it's pretty straightforward street fights, though there were a few buildings that could be entered. The one story mission available was set in a great stadium where you slowly fought your way upwards through the bleachers up to a final confrontation on the roof, which was pretty cool.

Not quite. You have two primary weapon slots which can be filled however you like, and one sidearm slot. So you can roll with two LMGs, or one full-sized sniper rifle and one semi-auto sniper rifle, or any other combination. Ammo for the weapons is grouped by type (assault rifles, LMG, sniper rifles, SMGs, shotgun) and you can indeed run out. NPC enemies drop ammo and there are spots to resupply scattered around the place, particularly near traders and on certain mission checkpoints. Your sidearm has unlimited ammo.

We have seen a limited beta, so we don't know. For all we know maybe theres some extra weapon type hidden in he high levels.
Explosions in this game don't oneshot people, you probably want status effects ( bleed, concussion, ...) to finish people with your guns.

The city is like fungus. It growns on you. Initially theres so much poo poo everywhere, tons of details that looks exactly like trash or are literal trash, that you will feel the city is ugly. But the more you play, the more apparent will be the patterns. It looks good with different looking areas, but maybe not enough for some people tastes. It don't seem that big park in new york will be available until a further DLC in the long road to the future.

What we have seen is that the "emergency slot" always have pistol with infinite ammo and bonus to headshots.
Primary and secondary are interchangeable.
Weapons can be modded to be anything. You can use a sniper-shotgun (it will be useless) on the primary slot and a AK-47 in the secondary. I run a closed quarters rifle in the primary and a sniper has secondary because thats what make more sense to me, and I think will be the normal, but I could see some people using a closed quarters weapon has primary and another closed quarters has secondary. (shotgun and uzi-like weapon).

Can't tell you that, It would be biased. Personally consider the game a experiment that will probably run out of track and murder everyone: Is a Ubisoft game. Ubisoft hare the type of people that hate their customers and they think they know better. Their own workers are only pawns for the high ups. Their executives have retarded ideas, and they don't consult PR before talking to the press. They work with many companies at the same time making each tiny parts of a game, so often artistic direction is not here not there. But on this game, the developers have a massive influence and seems to operate much better than your average Ubisoft game, so much that It don't feel like a Ubisoft game. Is better.

For Youtubers I guess they either have to be extremely pro (and are probably also paid for it in some cases) or extremely con, because "yeah, so I played this game and well, it's :mediocre:" won't get you views and does not really justify playing it on a stream more than 3 hours (neither does hating it, but if you are extremely over the top enthusiastic about hating it, that gimmick could work to get views).

Hence never trust anybody's judgement but your own, so playing the beta is your best bet.

That said, I really like the game, but I also see potentil cons th ebeta won't clear up.
Pro:
- It's not twitchy, so even 30+ old farts like me can compete with 15 year olds with lightning-reflexes
- I love the way they depict New York, the attention to detail is awesome
- the weapons and equipment offer a LOT of variety.

Possible con:
it could, and probably will, be mostly fetch/kill quests of the "go there, kill baddies, pick up x, go home" variety in PvE, but holy poo poo DZ can be totally intense when you foudn somethign nice and pray to survive ot be able to pin it to the chopper. That would offers a nice counterweight when PvE gets boring.

I won't go into "gunplay" because a) I know nothing about guns and am not interested in them outside games at all b) I don't pay enough attention to pixel firearms to even know what exactly gunplay is supposed to mean. The guns in this game work and can be somewhat customized to your playstyle , that's enough for me.

Of course, YMMV.

If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.

1. There are LMGs.

2. Its mostly streets actually, not hallways. You're way wrong about that. The game is like 80% on the streets of new york city. If that's not appealing to you, stop now. They look extremely good though, amazing weather and lighting and particle effects. Sometimes you go inside buildings and they have various interiors with lots of detail, and rooftops. But its mostly streets.

Think grand theft auto 4. That's what the level is like. Its not hallways.

3. SMGs/Shotguns/etc. are not "secondary" class. Primary and secondary are just two slots. You put whatever you want in them. Two AKs, a shotgun and a sniper, whatever.

4. Its good. Its what Destiny should have been, its like Hunger Games or Battle Royale. You run around and team up with or kill random people. In the DZ anyways. The DZ is the reason to play this game. Otherwise its just another 3rd person cover shooter.

Play it tomorrow and find out yourself.

The streets are hallways. I think that's what he meant. You can't really fly, there doesn't seem to be any creative use of the Z-Axis (like scaling a fire escape). You're essentially in long hallways with two walls and a ceiling and you run down the hallway.

Uhh, if every game where you can't fly counts as hallways, 99% of videogames are hallways. That's not really fair and doesn't make sense.

If they're not literal hallways then I would interpret 'hallways' to mean linear level design, and The Divison's NYC is neither of those.

As for creative use of z-axis, did you even play the beta?

There's tons of rooftops, you can actually rappel up and down buildings, you can use fire escapes... you're entirely wrong. You can't "seal" a fire escape, but its a multiplayer not-MMO so that wouldn't really work anyways. I mean maybe you can do something like that during a mission...

FreelanceSocialist

I was trying to convey what he meant - a lot of the promo footage is just shooting things in streets and hiding behind boxes.

Timeouts?!

We'll take care of that.
There is a pretty fun ziplining rappel mechanic. One of the extraction points in the previous beta was on the roof of a parking garage, and I believe there were 6 different ways to get to the roof between ziplines, stairs, ladders, scaffolding, etc. On top of that, there was a spot to set up ambushes/overwatch across the street that was even higher than the roof. You're constrained by the geography of a modern American city, but it's not just a sea of flat planes.

I didn't catch, is the cap in the beta the same as it was in the closed? 8/12?

Ulvirich

It's probably the same. I haven't heard of them adding more, content wise, than the extra mission that unlocks the deployable turret skill.

z-Axis:
1. lots of ropes to rappel
2. you can run around on roofs
3. I found at least 3 fire escapes in the closed beta you could use (one of which was tied into a mission)
4. you can climb all sorts of scaffoldings bringing yourself in a better position to attack NPCs/Players
5. Multi storey bulding interiors

It almost feels like you can do anything you could in real life except not all houses can be entered (some can though and I searched for stuff in several flats). Yes you can't fly, and you cant AssCreed' it up the walls.
But the city feels like a city, not like a hallway at all.
