The deal was announced as he walked on the field at Cubs camp, which is also hilarious.

8 million base, with a 9 million dollar option for next year for Fowler according Cubs ESPN beat writer. How bad ARE those physicals?

Wow, I wasn't expecting that. I thought Fowler to O's was a done deal, but I should have known better because Orioles. Either way, I'm glad to have Fowler return to the north side.

Fowler wanted a Opt-out option after one season, the Orioles were unwilling to do it . So the Cubs were able to sign him back at sub-market value due to giving him a mutual option.

Glad to have him back.

Also, we have a new rule in baseball, henceforth known as the "Chase Utley rule"...

Also: mound visits are now limited to 30 seconds.

I hope they don't trade him yet. Having those 4 guys provides some flexibility. Schwarber struggled a lot against lefties which Fowler excelled at so there is a natural platoon. Fowler also becomes a real nice defensive sub late in games for either corner outfielders. There are plenty of at-bats to go around, especially if they still want to give Schwarber an occasional start at catcher.

Then again, Soler makes a nice chip for another top of the rotation starter at the deadline.

Losing Coghlan also means we lost a bench spot, so Soler is really needed there.

This means Heyward goes back to his strongest position. Not a terrible thing, defensively.

On days where Schwarber sits, how does the OF configuration look? Fowler CF, Heyward RF, Soler LF?

Don't trade Soler just to trade him, It's always useful to have players to use in case of injury either via playing them or trades.

Almost certainly, yes.

I'm sad to see Coghlan go. His bat was really helpful the past two seasons.

Yeah if the plan was to trade Soler they wouldn't have traded Coghlan.

ALFbrot

Aaron Brooks is a bizarre trade target. He was certainly capable of making big plays under center, but was prone to so many mental mistakes that it nullified any shot of him leading a winning team. He could also never quite escape the shadow of his cousin, Mike Vick.
