People posted less in old GBS and that might have had something to do with the average quality of posts. The forum moved just as fast but I think it was because there was a greater diversity of posters. Also people put effort into the funny things they wrote. Some of the most popular threads were people posting serialized accounts of something fantastical that happened in their life, short stories, elaborate photoshop threads, when photoshop was considered a skill. But that's not what is cool and also funny now. Twitter is cool and also funny and that's kind of what new GBS reminds me of. Also that was maybe half of the forum. The other half were discussions of topics bordering on serious and we still have those and they looked about the same but with more grammar.

I don't remember GBS ever being "good" (whatever that even means) but I remember it being far less tedious to read in 2004 or thereabouts than it was right before 1.0 got nuked

ppl are just as wary of gbs now as they used to be but for different reasons. instead of the threat of probation over a comma splice, now if youre a poo poo youll get called a poo poo and you gotta nut up or shut up. or just keep on, whatever this is obviously unacceptable to a lot of something awful posters

The lovely thing about trying is that if you try and fail, that feels bad. I can think of a bunch of gold threads in old gbs like that dude who worked at an expensive hotel and had some amazing but probably fake stories about his life that people would certainly spend more time making GBS threads on nowadays as stdh than simply enjoying the solid writing. When a lot of the social jockeying on this forum revolves around making fun of other people it's no surprise no one wants to stick their neck out.
