On the one hand, I get NBC's frustration, we're down to one team they love showing all the time to get the bigger 'traditional' hockey television market and they could get eliminated tonight. Still, events like watch parties are basically the perfect way to get casual fans into the game, and the NHL desperately needs that right now. A big rear end outdoor watch party in these entertainment districts is tailor-made to get more people backing a team (and the sport as a whole) and if you're in a part of the country like Tampa where the weather lets you pretty much do this all drat season, you'd be stupid not to do them.

So I know we all agree this is terribly dumb rationalization, but how does it make more sense to let the fans know to just go watch at a local bar? Those TVs count for ratings but those TVs will be on the game ANYWAY and NBC could always, I don't know, show a picture of the crowd outside the stadium and say "Oh yeah, and these 8,000 people were watching as well" to whoever the gently caress even cares about TV shares anymore. Advertisers? Again - "Hey we do this thing where 8,000 people are all stuck outside and their total focus is on the gigantic screen with your product for erectile dysfunction emblazened on it." Goddamn, NBC

That wouldn't work. Advertisers don't care about weird little exceptions like that. The thing is, 8000 people is literally insignificant. A single ratings point represents about 1.2m households, and they only report to 1 decimal place. An 8000 shift up or down doesn't show. There's nothing to gain for NBC here, they're just being dicks. (Plus some of those are going to be familiars who would only count as one household anyway. And most of them, if not all, are not going to be Nielsen families.)

Isn't the entire NHL viewing market basically a rounding error to begin with?

I understand that, but a real marketing person could STILL spin it to make it work to their advantage and the NHL could add it to their marketing crap along with the 12 outdoor games every year and so on and so on. Make the game more accessible and the people will come and they will bring money because all the cool kids wear hockey jerseys.

I'm not saying Bettman has spent his entire 20+ year career as Commissioner actively discouraging people from wanting to watch hockey. I'm just saying everything Bettman has done in the past 20+ years is exactly what someone who wants to actively discourage people from wanting to watch hockey would do. It's actually pretty amazing.

DJExile posted:Watch parties like that are loving awesome and clamping down on them is the best loving way to chase fans off. Goddamnit NHL. To hear the NHL is as incompetent as the NBA is not surprising just annoying. OKC Thunder also had "Thunder Alley" during their last NBA Finals appearance. It was such a huge loving success that drew in tens of thousands of ADDITIONAL fans to downtown OKCs entertainment district outside the arena, huge success for food trucks, merchandise vendors, and made it affordable for large families to experience NBA basketball with other fans that the NBA/Thunder decided that There was also a completely unrelated shooting down the road around the same time near a movie theater and that was part of the blame to end it. Big push lately to bring it back when they make the finals. Hope they do. David Stern and Gary Bettman love their fans, they just happen love sucking the cranks of a few local business people even more. WouldDesk fucked around with this message at 20:44 on May 26, 2016 |

Historically are teams right around .500 either way whether they win Game 6 or lose Game 6? Does anyone have that data? I don't recall TV networks bringing it up every time there's a Game 7 so I assume that means the data is uninteresting.

The Lightning just moved the watch party a few blocks further (to the same spot they were for the Redwings series) and are calling it a "Block Party" problem solved.
