Thrilling the forums since 2001

This man stands a non-zero chance of being the next president of the United States.

quote:

Four years ago, at a charity fundraiser in Palm Beach, Donald Trump got into a bidding war at the evening's live auction. The items up for sale: A Denver Broncos helmet, autographed by then-star quarterback Tim Tebow, and a Tebow jersey.

Trump won, eventually, with a bid of $12,000. Afterward, he posed with the helmet. His purchase made gossip-column news: a flourish of generosity, by a mogul with money to burn. "The Donald giveth, and The Donald payeth," wrote the Palm Beach Daily News. "Blessed be the name of The Donald."

But Trump didn't actually pay with his own money.

Instead, the Susan G. Komen organization — the breast-cancer nonprofit that hosted the party — got a $12,000 payment from another nonprofit , the Donald J. Trump Foundation.

Trump himself sent no money. (In fact, a Komen spokesperson said, Trump has never given a personal gift of cash to the Komen organization.) He paid the bill with money from a charity he founded in 1987, but which is largely stocked with other people's money. Trump is the foundation's president. But, at the time of the auction, Trump had given none of his own money to the foundation for three years running.

Hey USPol!

Today is the 153rd anniversary of the 1st day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Army of Northern Virginia, the seemingly-unstoppable primary military force of a despotic slave-empire under command of Robert E. Lee, had invaded the North for the second time in an attempt to force the decisive battle, destroy the Army of the Potomac, and win the war.

It didn't quite work out for them that way, as Union forces under the (tremendously under-appreciated and loving BAD-rear end) George Gordon Meade would hold the line for three days against everything Lee could throw at them, and in the end it would be the rebel army (what was left of it!) crawling away from the field in total defeat. Take a few minutes out of your day here on the 1st of July to listen to the greatest song in American history and glory in the fact that 153 years ago today the dream of Slave America suffered a fatal blow on the hills south of Gettysburg.

You don't have to burn a rebel flag in remembrance but it's always a good idea. The Union forever, hurrah boys hurrah, down with the traitor, up with the star.

Mark Twain wrote the best version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic as far as I am concerned.

Mark Twain posted:

Mine eyes have seen the orgy of the launching of the Sword;
He is searching out the hoardings where the stranger's wealth is stored;
He hath loosed his fateful lightnings, and with woe and death has scored;
His lust is marching on.

I have seen him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
They have builded him an altar in the Eastern dews and damps;
I have read his doomful mission by the dim and flaring lamps—
His night is marching on.

I have read his bandit gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my pretensions, so with you my wrath shall deal;
Let the faithless son of Freedom crush the patriot with his heel;
Lo, Greed is marching on!"

We have legalized the strumpet and are guarding her retreat;*
Greed is seeking out commercial souls before his judgement seat;
O, be swift, ye clods, to answer him! be jubilant my feet!
Our god is marching on!

In a sordid slime harmonious Greed was born in yonder ditch,
With a longing in his bosom—and for others' goods an itch.
As Christ died to make men holy, let men die to make us rich—
Our god is marching on.

The way the narrative has been going, I actually think Hillary had reason to be legitimately concerned if she was going up against a more run-of-the-mill establishment Republican. The number of people on my Facebook posting "Well, obvious both candidates are horrible" or "well, this election just shows how corrupt the system is" is crazy.

I don't even like Clinton, but I'm reflexively liking her by my brain rejecting all the over-the-top conspiracy theories against her. The Democrats just put forward the furthest-left platform they've ever had, and she's basically all-in on being Obama 2, but no, she's totes further right than Trump and she's only in it to steal money or whatever

Is that how campaigns work? You can just borrow a ton of cash, transfer it to yourself and then declare your campaign bankrupt?

Just to clarify this, Trump can siphon donations from his campaign to his personal funds because he loaned his campaign like $50 million, and he could in theory pay himself back with donors' money.

Trump is now claiming he's forgiven those loans (meaning that in his capacity as lender he's absolved his campaign of the need to repay them) but the FEC has no record of it (yet).

I never used to take people's complaints about reddit and/or Bernie Bros seriously, but now that I've actually been paying attention to it all I've really noticed lately how terrible it all is. The entire politics section is an endless supply of threads from terrible sources detailing what a corrupt monster Hillary is with thousands of people piling on the strangest and most bizarre conspiracy theories. It's all 90's era black helicopters theories brought back ten fold. And these are from self-proclaimed liberals! Usually one or two people will come in and explain what's actually going on and they get stomped into the ground because they aren't looking deep enough or they don't see what's really going on.

I know this is common knowledge at this point, but I just realized how toxic it really all is.

Edit: What really set it off for me last night was the revelation that Bill is an evil mastermind for making small talk at an airport, and it was actually a plan years in the making to disrupt the justice system so that Hillary could steal the election and then remove everyone from power who could threaten her rule.

This particular part isn't really unique to Hillary. Bush got these same type of "he's going to seize power forever!" madness back in the day, as well.

If you spend too much time down the rabbit hole thinking about how untrustworthy and nefarious your political opponent is, you'll start to believe anything about them in a self-sustaining feedback loop.
