I grew up catholic and it was pretty boring. There was one period which they were pretty heavy handed on the little donation baskets, but the old white folks made up the difference like they usually did. The church wasn't really mustache twirlingly bad, but each mass took forever and teenage-me wanted to do other things with my time each Sunday. The high school youth group seemed generally don't ask/dont tell towards gay/lesbian kids, which I guess is better than what I've heard from other places. Still, having to go to a meeting every thursday after school was really dumb. But all the cool kids were forced by their parents too, so it was sorta an unofficial extension of a high school day. Im not sure if all catholic churches are deathly quiet and rigid, but the church I went to afterwards felt really nutso because people would get off of their chairs and dance and occasionally cry. Then there was this weird youth rock band and they'd get everyone all jumpy and animated. 10 year old me would have liked that more, but at that point in my life it just felt really surreal. sorry for this bad post

For all the messed up stuff about Catholicism, they aren't nearly as bad as Southern Baptists (at least, the ones that actually adhere to the no dancing/dating/being alone with the opposite sex before marriage stuff). Almost all the "dates" (except you couldn't call them dates, it's "courting") I went on in highschool were supervised by an escort, usually a brother if they had one. When I finally went to college and realized all girls weren't like that it was like going to heaven.

I was raised to be Catholic by parents who couldn't be bothered to go to mass, ever. I didn't go to Catholic school but had to attend Sunday school K through 8th grade for a certain number of weeks a year. I have the best confirmation name, Conan, because I am a strong barbarian. I don't think any of the Catholic kids had it as bad as the Presbyterian kids that lived across the street from me, so it could have been worse. I'm kind of a non-theistic Buddhist now I guess? Religion is pretty lame all around, I think.

Overall, Catholics laypeople are generally pretty okay. It's the church that is a world stretching monument to corruption and exploitation. In the case of Southern Baptists, the people are more often as screwed up as their church, but the church's reach is far shorter. A Southern Baptist or Pentacostal or whatever church lacks the sheer resources, skill, and deliberate fuckery of the Catholic Church. It's hard to say one is worse than the other.
