Question about RSD Black Friday. This I my first time participating in one of these. There's only one LP I want. On the RSD site it says not all stores will carry all albums, which makes sense. I called one of my local stores today and they said they won't know what they are getting until right before the day itself. Is that right? I was hoping I could place an order for it or something to ensure they'd carry it.

How does it work?

Which one do you want?

The Vandals "Hollywood Potato Chip"

I didn't want them to hold one for me. I just wanted to make sure they were even going to get one in.

Also, when it says an album is regional focus, I assume that means it'll only be released in certain areas? If so, how do you know which ones?

A lot of time that's fancy talk for "UK only". If you miss out, just wait six months and check discogs when the people who were trying to flip these things just list the poo poo for retail price because they couldn't unload it for whatever mark up morons were paying the afternoon of RSD. It happens more often than not. Also, the individual stores don't usually know for sure what they're going to have until the day before.

the idea of rsd is that you'll visit multiple stores in search of what you want/to check them out because the day is designed around the stores not the releases. if you could just call in advance, confirm availability, and pick up that one record it would defeat the purpose of rsd and be the same as buying any other record.

Hey, I work at a record store and I can hopefully clear some of this up.

The record companies (RED, WEA, LITA, etc) send us Excel spreadsheets with all the titles and we send them back with how many of each we want. For Black Friday RSD, because it's smaller we generally get everything we order. For instance, if we order 8 copies of Porno for Pyros we'll probably get 8.

However, that's not always true, especially if a particular release is "hot" (ie. all record stores are ordering multiple dozen copies) or if it's some kind of ridiculously small release like 300-500. In that case we may order 8 but later we open the shipping box and we get 3...or 0. That's why we tell people we're not sure what we're going to get or how many because it's honestly true.

And as far as the region specific thing, that's basically a function of the Excel spreadsheets. There are certain releases (in our case UK or world releases) that we simply don't get offered at our store so it's not like we don't order them, we don't even get a chance to order them, because they're not offered to us.

Or just walk into a record store and start bawling like a baby, choking back your tears as you snottily list off the records you're looking for.

watching a grown man cry usually makes people uncomfortable enough to get them to put your list together and get you out the door away from normal people.

this will work.

If you haven't been keeping up, they're more or less the same band touring under the name Free Salamander Exhibit now (a couple new band members, though goddamn I miss Carla!) and they're still really fun to see.

Apparently all three albums are going to be up for sale mid-November, they just haven't posted the info for the next two albums yet.

Holy crap, apparently one of the very best compilations released in the last few years is getting a sequel:

http://lightintheattic.net/releases/2637-the-microcosm-visionary-music-of-continental-europe-1970-1986

$50 absolutely flew out of my wallet as soon as I learned about this set's existence about 5 minutes ago, particularly since colored vinyl is apparently still available. (I also cannot recommend I Am The Center enthusiastically enough, especially to anyone with a fondness for the more beautiful, less aggro side of acts like Oneohtrix Point Never or Emeralds.)

I think I liked the second one the best and I kinda liked the third one a lot, even if it was more metal than I usually go for. I liked the production a lot.

Thanks for letting me know about this. A lot of stuff on LITA is boring crap to me, but some of their niche curated collections are inspired (like I Am The Center).

I have a love for uniquely colored vinyl. While I'm sure most of you have no interest in the band The Color Morale, they recently released their first 3 albums as a set, all on uniquely colored vinyl. Got my set today and wanted to show off a few pics. Like I said, I'm sure most of you guys don't like them, but these are some gorgeous vinyl.

I picked up a Technics SL-QL1 the other day, and finally got around to trying to service it. Turns out the motor gear/arm thing was just stuck and needed to be spun. Now I'm having trouble finding a headshell. Googling keeps leading me to just the stylus/cartridge. Any ideas?

Edit: I have a 1200MK2 with a headshell but doubt I can switch them out.
