A 2/10 effort post is that Falun Gong is a new religion based in Buddhism with a bunch of other syncretic crap thrown in that started getting really popular among olds in the early 90s because it promised immunity from disease and aging at the same time that the government dismantled public pensions and started limiting access to health care.

The government was concerned about its rapidly growing popularity and made some moves to curb it (don't remember what exactly, this is a 2/10 effort phone post) that led to big protests of olds in Beijing. That of course led the government to freak the gently caress out and go into full genocide mode, making FG an illegal cult, arresting and disappearing leaders and basically doing the opposite of what you should do when dealing with a new culty religion.

So that's the bad stuff from the government. How about the bad stuff on FG? They're not exactly sweet little Buddhist monks who never did anything wrong either. "Scientology with Chinese characteristics" is a sort of apt moniker. They do their best to take over the lives of anyone who joins, suck out a fair bit of money, and their leader lives in a suspiciously swanky mansion in... Tennessee, I think? Somewhere in the US he escaped to.

My short take is that FG is bad and I wouldn't want anyone I know to join them, but they don't deserve to be genocided and in fact the Chinese government's handling of the situation has no doubt only made them stronger and more dangerous to the CCP than if they had just treated them like the US treats Scientology. But the CCP overreacting and making their problem much worse than before is pretty much their MO for dealing with any threat.

As for Falun Gong, it's bad, sure. But the main questions are 'Is it as bad as X' and 'How many of the people in it are just astoundingly naive yet wish to make a positive difference'.

Falun Gong is a crock of poo poo, sure, but the fact that an internal group of significant size can at least put up a show of protesting against the Party without getting Trotsky'd off the face of the Earth is a little encouraging.

the cause of the protests was falun gong's feelings getting hurt by some editorials. they had a considerable amount of high-level government supporters in the 90s as well (Qiao Shi, for example, who unfortunately lost to the Frog Master). maybe they should have realized that regularly mobilizing your followers to organize protests is not a thing you want to do in post-tiananmen china? especially for a religious cult, china kind of has a bad history with those.

Sit down for a second and listen well of the tale of the cult that thought it could beat Communism with Chinese Characteristics

Once upon a time there was man named Li Hongzhi

Doesn't this look like a man who would convince you to join a cult?

Now, Li here was one of a bunch of cult leaders that proliferated in China at the time trying to fill the spiritual void left behind by the complete abandonment of ideals of Communism. If you studied Asian religious history you'll know that cults in that neck of the woods aren't exactly rare, with the CCP initially just letting to the dude be registered as another "Qigong master". Qigong, fyi is a buncha Chinese homegrown hokum involving your ~life energy~ and basically consists of eating dumb poo poo and doing boring exercises.

In fact, at the start, our buddy Li here was a bit of a rising star, around '92 or so. The gov was hoping that his stuff would keep people healthy, lowering healthcare costs (well, the stuff is basically mystical calisthenics so that makes a bit of sense) and distract them from more important things, like, say, the people getting hosed over by the CCP or questioning their power in any way whatsoever. Autocrats aren't terribly fond of competition for that, it's kinda their thing.

I'm sure you see where this is going.

Now as the Falun Gong got more and more popular, the CCP decides to co-opt it. It is told to integrate into the Communist apparatus.

Our smart fellow Li there refuses. Alongside this, he was teaching poo poo for free. This, combined with its popularity, is pissing off other Qigong teachers. Here's this dickbag, giving away teaching for free, making it harder for them to charge for it. The cheek! When the Chinese bureaucracy that oversees Qigong tried to intervene, Li has a hissy fit and quits.

He quits from the CCP run society that oversees Qigong. Now, the CCP doesn't like any competition for their power, and this extends to theological matters. You may have heard about their Catholic investiture controversy? (China is the only country in the world still eating that -30 opinion malus with the Pope fyi) Well, seeing as Qigong was getting a bit too popular, China had started pointing out its obvious problems in its media, but until this point, Falun Gong had been looked at as a controlled project and had been exempt from this.

Not anymore. Now, they were getting the same poo poo as any other religious group and part of the same organized put down the rest got.

This made them loving furious. They sent letters, they organized protests, Li said that it was ~a righteous thing to defend are faith!!1~ or whatever it is cult leaders say to get people to jabber on about poo poo like this. In short they challenged the CPP to change their stance on the issue. The CCP refuses and escalates. The Falun Gong rises up, with Li here rather wisely deciding ~to spread the good word abroad~ and ends up with an American Permanent Residency.

Finally, things come to a head in '99 when some dude vaguely connected to the CCP writes an article making GBS threads over Qigong and Falun Gong especially. So they decide to protest, again, outside the newspaper that published the article. Now, mostly the CCP had let this poo poo slide, but this time they deployed the riot police against them. You'd think that at this point, they might be realizing they've reached their limit and further escalation is bad idea right? We're talking about an authoritarian government that has just absorbed two parts of itself recently with the reunification, that saw ten years ago how the Tienanmen square protests could be a threat to their power. The timing is significant. Furthermore you know that history of cults I mentioned earlier? A lot of the time, they often balloon a bit too much and end up trying to seize power. The Red Turbans and the Taiping are some famous examples, but basically these cults are bad poo poo.

So what do they do?

They organize the biggest protest since Tienanmen square, with thousands of people in them, many of them in positions of power and wealth! They try and intimidate the party!

They then meet with Premier Zhu Rongji, and he is all buddy buddy with them and talks about how surely, we can reach a reasonable compromise about this. The protesters disperse, happy that a peaceful resolution was reached.

Jiang Zemin, Zhus boss, was loving Furious. How dare these jumped up little cultists try and stand up to the CCP? How dare Zhu negotiate with them?! The sheer loving cheek! These people are clearly a danger to the continued stability of China and as we all know, there's only one good way to deal with threats to the stability of the state: mass incarceration of the thousands of people identified as the leaders of the movement, followed by it being made illegal and a campaign to eradicate it entirely. For some strange reason, the people involved with it didn't seem terribly willing to change their mind about the whole "Qigong is good, the CCP seems to be not that cool" when they were confronted by all this. Who knew?

But killing all of them would be bad, and so they are given the chance to change their minds and better themselves with some physical exercise and work, while working on that whole "no longer being a cultist" thing. So the CCP organizes a few camps to show them the error of their ways and oh, turns out there's so many of them they quickly become one of the biggest groups in the gulags. Because that's pretty much what they are, or rather, gulags with Chinese characteristics.

I don't really give a poo poo about the rest. To me, the Falun Gong will always be the guys who thought that their possession of the mystical truth of light stretches combined with mumbo jumbo and a glorious leader that fled at the very first hint of trouble to the US could stand up the CCP and basically dare them to gently caress them over, then act with shocked horror when, actually, it turns out the CCP can do pretty much anything they want to them because they're the governing body of an authoritarian state, you loving idiots.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the story

Cults became huge in 90's russia too. With communism as an ideology gone and religion suddenly un-banned the country was swept with a tidal wave of the worst sort of religious con-men. Everything from eastern style buddhist cults and con-men to US style mega-church preachers. But the main thing they had in common was that if you gave them money, good things would happen to you and people were desperate for good things. The country had no natural immunity to these people, no bullshit detectors, so tons of people had what was left of their life savings sucked dry by people selling magic holy water or special mystic eastern healing water. There was a craze for magical water that would bring you health and good luck, they even advertised it on TV. Immediate post-soviet russia was a really crazy place to be.

In some ways Putin's gay marriage to the Patriarch wasn't just a power play, but an urgent need to re-establish some sort of official russian religion before new-age eastern cults and american funded mega-church poo poo took hold.

You need to believe in something: it's just some make sense and is real (socialism, Lenin, Finland) while some of it is base nonsense used to exploit you (cults in general, free market capitalism, Jesus).

You can live without an ideal I suppose, but that means existing on a level lower than the Economist subscriber, which is pretty dire.
