:obama:My first car was a stick:obama:
I picked up a mission to chase a thief. I took their HP down to 5% and stopped - if you blow the ship up, the mission fails. I didn't know what to do so I followed them to a nearby station, where they docked, so I landed to grace their captain with a lecture on personal responsibility

He must've taken it to heart. I took another potshot at them while they were docked and they immediately surrendered their spaceship

It lifted off the pad just enough to squeeze my spacesuit underneath - mine now

Sadly it never dropped the cargo so I had to abandon the mission

An extension on this, I wish when a trader called out for help from pirates you could answer the call. Agreeing to help will turn the pirate hostile on you.

Edit: How the hell do you find missions?

Edit 2: Nevermind, those mission icons are fuckin tiny.

Check the left menu on the map, under 'missions'. They'll pop up there as you 'collect' them from stations.

I ended up inside the station model for one of the Teladi trading stations. Quite a lot of empty space inside. Bounced around for a while before reloading a save. Very nearly ended up landing on the underside of the platform, but the elevator blocked it.

Egosoft, might I suggest a hole in the geometry with a normalised sign to read 'exit', just in case, TIA? Or a sign that says 'you've had an out of geometry experience'.

Right, I'll recommend a couple of mods straight off; There's a mod for a fusion reactor plant - get this, or the only fusion reactors will come from you jacking Plutarch ships. There's an optional one for hull plates too, but that's more a crisis you can avoid later. The reactors is a specific bar.

You're relatively safe from individual fighters and drones, but swarms will gently caress you up. I personally ignore drones as a weapons system because they're poo poo.

Most of the early game-breaking bugs that caused me to rage quit the game originally are gone, so you'll see reference to buying _exactly_ 100 energy cells to Lonely Giant. One of the earliest bugs is any other amount would render the mission broken. Add to that the one where the freighters would just stop doing anything, and the one that caused the economy to collapse early, along with Yisha's constant stream of drivel and I left it well alone until after the DLCs were released.

The cops are super-aggressive around the stations, so dump poo poo that you don't need.

If you don't already have an NPC pilot on the ship, keep a spare crew around to promote to pilot. The AI still doesn't pathfind all that well, so Egosoft allows them to bounce against an object a couple of times then slowly move through it. M class ships are particularly prone to this while docking. If you find yourself stuck, get up and let your pilot take over, give a move command, and watch them slowly phase you through solid matter to freedom!

I took over from my pilot after watching her bump aimlessly through the geometry, so they might have introduced something that allowed for travel through normals. I should have perhaps given her another fifteen minutes, but I had an empire to run.

Which is fun, I'm sitting on a couple of million credits and we can't run to a passenger seat in a 3-crew light fighter.

I've gained a newfound love for what they're trying to do with the map. The lists are the prices for the stations bounded by a box in the same invisible color as the satellite radii, and you can click on items to filter them, but hovering shows you the station and the counts they're looking for. After queuing up a series of trades and having them come off _flawlessly_ was really nice.

Managing staff is still very painful, though.

The station flavor announcements should make a comeback. Egosoft, let us patch those and adverts in. Make it Steam integrated.

Playing Rebirth it seems to have a lot more "personality" to it but the management of your freighters is a huge pain in the rear end! Also still baffled by the graphical downgrades. I guess you can't ever turn the Albion Skunk into a supership like you could with your X1 Xperimental craft? Gotta rely on fighter escort then for battles?

Sort of. Weapons don't change. It's Mk1 all the way AFAIK. There's some engine and shield variants, engines can boost travel mode, normal speed or the strafe, but throw on a couple of strong shields and the mk3 sidewinder engines and you're a helicopter of death.

Fighters are basically popcorn in Rebirth. They're lovely to fight and use. In fact, in the original base you couldn't even build them. I think Drones were supposed to take the place of fighters and everything moved up a size scale, so your viable platforms are the various capitals. It's explained more in the 'plot'.

If you get stuck/annoyed, I put some details earlier in the thread for cheating in huge amounts of cash.

There's a couple of Mk.2s available late in the main plot and they all get unlocked after you finish the plot. The expansions add some Mk.3s as well.

Nividium isn't used in anything, so once you fill the storage of every station that buys it you can't sell anymore.

Didnt trade stations in x3 periodically consume their stock just for these cases? Seems pretty badly thought out to have Nvidium in the game but have nothing use it.

Really enjoying Rebirth so far I have to admit. The scope of course is much smaller than X4 but theres actually combat going on and the cap ships are large and explode satisfyingly. I have no idea why they went so many steps backwards regarding the tech side.

Haven't run into any bugs/crashes either yet.

In X4 the capships just kinda poof and leave behind the damaged model.

You can hack storage terminals with slicers to try and puke the Nvidia out (and then hoover it up and resell it to them), or if your standing is good enough to take the hit, bring in the 5 gun Paranid corvette and take down the storage tanks. Another thing on my list to check is whether you can piss off the factions and yet still have their traders come and buy your things like you could before.

Also X:R took like 3 years to get into a decently playable state. It's actually a decent game now, but it was way worse than X:4 on release. I think graphically X4 is actually better, but X:R's smaller focus lent itself better to really stunning set pieces, while with X:4 partially due to the backlash they tried to keep it closer to X3's style, which in most ways is great, but loses a bit of the pizazz.

Edit: Also if you're going to play X:R do yourself a favor and get the mods that remove the need for small talk to see the skills of potential employees and the one that lets you just buy trade agents rather than having to smalltalk to get them. (I actually liked the small talk like the first time I heard each conversation because it was a nice way to give life to the world but then you hear it over and over and over and have to wait to get basic stuff and holy poo poo)

I do feel like story missions is another place where they threw the baby out with the bathwater from X:R, but I think in the modern age you can't get away with the super German devs doing their own voice over stuff nearly as much as you could back in the day. I do wish there were more X3:TC style mini-stories though.

It's really helpful here to get a sweep of the whole galaxy and place satellites around every trade station that exists. You can squeeze several 10s of millions of credits out of them in pretty short order, but it will still dry up and leave your miners stranded and confused like he described.

At that point I switch them to mine everything except nividium, but I think the economy as a whole will still stall out if nobody is sinking wares into building ships. I guess you can create demand by building your own war fleet, but there's nobody to play with unless you turn on somebody.
