if aew does well this could eventually lead to a deal where there's no money exchanged between parties on their tv deal which would be a massive step in securing a future for all the contracted wrestlers

I wonder if you are required to provide programming for the length of the deal if you are paying for the right, but have already paid up front. Would the network try to work out a favorable deal to remain in their good graces?

This worked for WWF back in the 80s because they muscled in on every territory's time slot (for which the stations were paying the territories for the shows) and offered to put on paid programming. Pretty soon all stations saw no point in paying for wrestling period and a bunch of promotions died off. This actually put WWF in a severe financial crunch at one point but everything paid off post Wrestlemania. I can't think of a single other instance of this working, every other post 90s promotion bled out money. TNA would have died without the Carters. But the Khans have money too, and paying to get on Turner is a much bigger deal than paying for FSN or to get on random local stations like ECW. Depending on how Turner promotes and the particulars of the contract, it could work short term. I dunno. Is paying to get on Turner worse than just being an internet only type show or on local Sinclair stations?

Considering the prevailing thought process was “WWE just got a lot of money for a ‘sub-par’ product, AEW should get a decent chunk of change for a ‘better’ one” and this seems to be “Hey! We’re TNA 2!”, this sounds like they incredibly lost the plot here.

it's important to note that aew's production cost is going to be lower or similar to late 1990s WCW without even adjusting for inflation. there won't be monster truck bullshit, 2 million dollars of pyro per weekly show, 80 wrestlers paid to not even do anything, and so on. Well, there might be. but if that happens, then i hope they spend a lot of money on a sonny kiss truck that is molded to the shape of that bottom. not meant to objectify. don't take this out of context to harass me as usual. they will not be losing more than 20-30 million a year at the most, and potentially only while they get things running.
