Maccao isn't a raptor and Jaggi's big contribution is that he's superficially similar to a 'drome but is specifically a pack hunter - in earlier games you mostly didn't need to worry other 'prey but in Tri the little Jaggis would take potshots if you were near them. I like that it got expanded and, uh, expanded in World as Jagras will skulk about the edges of a Great Jagras fight but if you end up among them they'll dogpile you. One of the really neat things about critical analysis is that when you delve any deeper than superficially you often find the things that set the choices that some extremely intelligent and capable people made into motion. Maccao is exactly what he is intended to be and accomplishes that admirably, while Jaggi's focus is on being more aware of the changing nature of your surroundings: moment-to-moment situational awareness rather than just learning the best place to stand. Even the 'dromes are there to teach you about the ranges you are going to have to deal with for the rest of the game - while they're small and don't hit terribly hard they have attacks that can hit from where a much larger monster would.

I love MHW a ton - it's my first venture into the MH games and I've been playing it on and off since Steam release, first with the missus and more recently with some friends as well. Looking forward to this LP hitting the real fights - the early game makes for a good tutorial (and it was very necessary for me to get to grips with how the game worked!) but it's the big monster hunts that are really the draw here. Seeing different weapons from what I've been using (mostly Charge Blade with a bit of hunting horn for grouping) is also a big draw.

SSNeoman posted:Deffo feels like you have more mobility than the past MH games. From what I understand, there's been quite a lot of 'ease of play' improvements overall. World was designed to be more newbie friendly and help first time players adapt to the environment better. If you really want to see some boosted mobility, wait till we hit the frozen area and I can get some great use out of wedge beetles. New episode will be up tonight!

We go on our first expedition and have a rematch against the Great Jagras with a different sword n' shield. Our attempts to set up some new camps are interrupted by a 'handy' new monster.

When a monster is sleeping is also the ideal time to capture them if you have the trap and tranqs to do so. And you don't have to specifically kick toads to trigger them, any attack that connects will do it so it is possible to get caught off guard by one cause you triggered it accidentally. We were hunting the Kulu cause it was loving up the place we're gonna make a camp, not because of any issues it was causing for the forest itself. In fact most early game monsters are hunted for being a nuisance to our work, we won't be getting monsters that are a threat to the environment itself until the end. It is also possible for either your Palico to kill a monster and as an Insect Glaive user, I've actually had several instances of the monster being killed by my Kinsect. As far as I know there aren't any forms of damage that won't take a monster to zero except turf wars. This can lead to some very funny situations later in the game. Doesn't tranqing a monster while it's sleeping and poses no danger feel a little... Unfair? Y'almost gotta wonder who the threat here is.

Steam has Iceborn on sale till the end of the month! Probably going to snag it myself finally this weekend. Should have the next episode up in a day or two. Sorry for the delay but my Grandmother passed last week and then work became a whirlwind with the pandemic issues. Finally letting us stay at home now, so going to use this time to get some extra effort in the LP. thiswayliesmadness fucked around with this message at 02:28 on Mar 20, 2020 |

It's time to go hunt that Pukei-pukei we saw earlier! Since I promised a new weapon, I switch out the sword and shield for the gun lance, but give a comparative fight in the arena.

Gunlance is weird, and falls pretty consistently near the bottom of the global weapon use percentages. It's also one of my favorite weapons, so I'm glad to see it get some use.

As someone who's Monster Hunter experience consists of MGS Peace Walker the more outlandish weapons were always more fun to see in action, flourishes like the sword/shield air attacks aside.

I'm planning on doing 2 episode blocks with each of the weapons to start. Gives a bit to show off the quirks for each one without having me struggle too long with unfamiliar ones. After I've covered them all, I'll switch to my main weapons, but still pull out the odd other weapon for special fights or to show off unique traits. Gun lance has an interesting learning curve to it. There's a lot to micromanage with it and some of the moves seem rarely useful (aiming directly up with shots). But once you've mastered that, you're capable of putting out a great amount of damage. Next episode shows off some if it's pro's and cons better.

Rathian is the female actually and Glaive user you talked to is the Seeker, Rathalos is the male and we won't be seeing the First Wyverians for a while. It should also be noted that you can actually lock the Handler's outfit from the item box in your room which is also where you select what outfit you want her to wear if you don't want her running around the desert in the winter festival outfit.

I knew I had messed up his title as soon as the recording ended. For as important a character as he seems, we really won't see him that much. The handler I'll usually leave with whatever default outfits going at the time. If the thread has a favorite they see though, I can certainly change it over!

Since we're probably done seeing gunlance for a while, let's talk about what it used to be like. (I tried playing some old MH gunlance after the previous episode and want to share my pain.) It used to be that you could only quick-reload one round at a time. When I started playing MH, the shells weren't even loaded when the quest started. You had to remember to manually load those yourself at the start of every hunt. In the previous game, they added a heat gauge that affected your damage output. Shelling attacks would heat up your weapon, making your regular attacks do more damage the hotter it was. But if you shot too much, it would overheat, drop your damage for a few minutes, and you wouldn't be able to use wyvern's fire at all until it cooled off. That mechanic ultimately didn't do much except add unnecessary complexity to an already-complicated weapon, and I'm glad they didn't carry it forward to World. You also couldn't hop forwards, so if you wanted to close distance quickly, you had to turn around and hop backwards towards the monster. That wasn't an issue specific to gunlance, but for a weapon as slow as this one, getting the ability to do a little hop forwards to reposition in World was a godsend. For as fiddly and slow as gunlance can be now, it used to be way worse.

I'm always amazed to hear the quality of life improvements World made on the series. I would hope for all the extra micromanaging, the gun lance did more damage back then or such. Plus those hops can be so useful for getting in position quickly; Shuffling around constantly had to be a pain. Neat to hear the changes made to the series, so I encourage any stories on the older games (that don't go into spoilers)! The LP's having me do a more in depth dive with some of the weapons than I initially gave them. The next weapon I pull out in particular, I started to appreciate a lot more, so you might still see some weapon selections coming back later!

Oh Glaive is my favorite weapon and I have used it almost exclusively since 4 Ultimate. Partially because it has a design element that is adorable. I believe the reason Aquatic Mobility was changed to Aquatic/Polar Mobility has to do with Iceborne.
