As someone who just had to pull open terminal in MacOS the other week and expressed utter disdain for that whole process I can safely say Linux is not for me.

You definitely don't get what "seamless" means and you definitely have a very different interpretation of "just slaps a pretty UI on it" compared to normal people.

I cycled through a buncha distros with an old laptop several years ago and it’s pretty fun to gently caress around with. Except arch. Just program your OS at that point.

your friend wicka posted:You definitely don't get what "seamless" means and you definitely have a very different interpretation of "just slaps a pretty UI on it" compared to normal people. This is a big topic so for simplicity's sake I'm going to talk about one aspect of it, but you can take this same basic point and apply it to everything in Apple's ecosystem. There are a thousand FOSS applications that will do auto filesync across any device you have, and will auto-discover any new devices you want to add (that's the "seamless" bit). Getting to that point involves building and configuring the server and application. But sure, I will concede that Apple does more than slap on a pretty UI, that's what they do on the user facing side, they are also building, configuring, and managing, and scraping user data from all of the background infrastructure that makes the whole ecosystem possible. All of it is built upon well known and used standards and as such if a person was so inclined to build their own such infrastructure for their own purposes, they totally could. For most people it's not easy, and for others it may be more work to manage than it is worth, but the act of taking a picture on your phone and it shows up on your desktop at home seamlessly already exists in many many applications. But again, this is getting into those linux vs mac differences. Because of the specificity that linux requires, the type of person who is likely to use it is also more inclined to take an old PC and chuck a bunch of hard drives in it to make a private cloud. That is the privilege you pay for by using an apple device, all of that poo poo is done for you. Where they are the same is that once the infrastructure is built (be it yourself or by apple) adding/removing user devices, seamless file transfers, auto updates, etc all "just work" MustardFacial fucked around with this message at 23:20 on Aug 10, 2021 |
