looks like a brawler. I'm curious if it'll be inside holocure itself as another side game thing, or its own separate game. probably a separate thing, but it'd be funny if it was just parceled in with the rest of holocure.

The only difference I can see in the previews is the addition of arachnae enemies who do full frontal. I guess there's also the Legally Distinct Girl Demi-Fiend but her tatas are technically covered.

If I was the dev's friend I'd suggest they change the porn sprites to normal ones and not make a pointless division for their reasonably decent game.

The gist from bothering to log in on Steam seems to roughly amount to:

quote:

Thanks for checking out Spellbook Demonslayers NSFW! There will be a free demo coming in the next few weeks that will give you a taste of the new mechanics in Spellbook Demonslayers, and some of the NSFW illustrations and pixelart that is being made!

The amount of NSFW content will continue to increase over time as more of it gets made. For people who got here from the NSFW side, this is a gameplay-focused action game with in depth mechanics. The gameplay is not sex-based.

Unlike the old version of Spellbook, which was created specifically as a Vampire Survivors style game, the new version is like a hardcore action roguelike that has been streamlined and partially automated. This helps make it way more accessible and reduces the mental overload of using complex movesets with multiple weapons, while still allowing advanced players to dominate enemies with deep skill expression.

(Both NSFW and SFW versions are getting this update)

MATURE CONTENT DESCRIPTION
The developers describe the content like this:

All character depicted are over the age of 18.
Contains scenes depicting sex and masturbation.

So....A Bit Different in Aims & Execution vs the likes of Beautiful Mystic Survivors and such---but maybe the first one to start normal and then go Beyond instead of the other way around? Maybe this is The New Thing catching a wave for devs to get through the algorithmic churn as whatever is going on with this side of Steam must have some lucrative bits to it else it seems a bit much beyond a hankering for some more layers atop existing pixels, animation flexes, and presumably some eyecatch scenes?

Ironically, Malice & Greed would probably be even more thematically primed for this given it is so very much SMT channeling and the audience likely up for it.

am i reading this right? they are updating the game to not be a survivor-like anymore?

ImpAtom
May 24, 2007

I am pretty annoyed by this. I thought the original was reasonably fun and having something I paid for being replaced by a 'streamlined' non-survivor version that is also suddenly super horny is pretty crap. (And no, I don't care if there's a NSFW/SFW split, every time a game has that the SFW version is still really horny, just with tatats covered.)

Doomykins

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?
Oh, how truly weird. I do think this might be a good idea, though if you're not after a non-survivor game it won't be for you. When I played Spellbook you could really feel the empty space where no stage design and no actual finale to the stage that aligned with what little story you got were.

Like you're a bodacious witch fighting demons serving The Butcher? But if you survive the stage you just get invited to two almost meaninglessly different options to kill monsters until you finally die? And you can see the bad girl's silhouette, is she empowering me?

It was all very early access/unfinished design and having 5 stages that weren't actually different was lame. An actual game structure focus would help Spellbook a lot. Tatas and genre shift... I dunno!

I'm glad to hear that they'll be leaving behind the complex move sets of survivor-likes. VS is cool and all but having to remember W, A, S, AND D at the same time is pretty stressful.

ExiledTinkerer

I don't know, my read of the Spellbook situation is more charitable in terms of What I Think The Subtext Is constitutes something more along the lines of the game is getting more distinctive in identity & systemic trappings to become more of a "Survivorslike" rather than just a "survivorslike (VS)". Trying to (re)characterize it as a Hardcore Action Roguelike (with streamlining and automation) feels more like a pitch anew presuming new eyes on the project outright beyond the, let's call it an olive branch, extended to an extra prospective audience of, at times, one-handed game folks.

Based on Malice & Greed and the long, winding road of Spellbook to date---I have to give them a certain level of benefit of the doubt in terms of honestly meaning to do right and thinking things through in terms of systems and going for deliberate, singularly dev-driven games outright...pandemic did a different kind of number of them compared to the likes of Spirit Hunters. If anybody can do the whole 2 Versions, 1 Game thing competently, they have to have a pretty solid shot.

At any rate, here comes Horde Hunters hitting you with The Mix Up~

Hello. This update brings plenty of run variety and balance adjustments.

Run variety

Once you play enough runs they can start to feel the same. You may even have a particular set of weapons or items that you pick every time. But what if the equipment stats were different each run making you think on your choices more? Variety is the spice of life after all.

All weapons on level up now have randomised stats on each run. Based on their stats they are classified as either "Weak", "Common", "Strong" or "Epic". Not only that, but items are classified the same way and may have some additional properties as well.

But that's not all. Character stats, gold and even consumable amounts have some RNG in them so the choice is not always a sure thing.

Balance adjustments

As you can see from the changelog many items have had a number of tweaks due to the run variety changes. There's also a couple of more noticeable changes you can see almost immediately:

1. Your weapon/item inventory starts with one free slot and a new is opened every 3 levels. You can also buy a slot open behind the Buy/Sell Info button

2. The difficulty curve has been adjusted to be more of an even scale rather than having sudden spikes.

I'm viable ladies.

Man, I'm not sure how you're supposed to be Haz 5 in DRG:S other than just not getting hit whatsoever, and making sure you get the right weapons to their unstable OCs asap. Enemy damage scales way too quickly to even try and pick armor up, it's really rough.

I think the main issue right now is that if you invest in tanky stats, there's no way to boost healing to compensate your larger health pool. And Healing Regen boosts are limited to the one artifact, which ironically is very good when you initially unlock it early on and starts to suck when your meta upgrades vastly outstrip the benefit it gives. (an extra 2 regen on top of the 10 I already have? Whatever.)

Game is fun at higher hazards and the later class kits, but yeah it needs something else and a bit of tweaking to really shine.

gonna continue being the one person talking about the game in the title of the thread and say: how exactly are you supposed to make any progress in the astral stair for any given character? am I supposed to save it until I have like a billion permanent upgrades on everyone or is there a trick I'm entirely missing

I did grab the ghost character and finally ran around to get the pickups after many non cheese attempts but it still feels like I'm missing something

Doomykins

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?
I didn't find anything unusual about Astral Stair but I also have full meta upgrades and am pretty used to rushing 1-2 starter weapons to crowd-clearing potential for early levels. There's also using a cheese character like the bone dragon or red death that start with a free evolved weapon.

I picked up Death Must Die cause of the dude who posts every Vamp-like update and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Though the loot aspect is simultaneously fun and annoying because I'd like to play around with poo poo but it's hard to find stuff that I'd want to play around with, especially the items with mods like "have a dragon by your side the whole game" or "cast spell on dash" or whatnot.

Also apparently there's a bunch of limited unique weapons that were only given out during Christmas?

EDIT: Also sorta funny that every high level build that I read about is just TIME + DEATH + WHATEVER (usually Justice).

EDIT EDIT: Also I miss the presence of addable stats, I like having them in Vamp-likes cause it makes me feel like I'm getting incrementally stronger with each playthrough.

I'm loling about the way this genre is turning out after a year or two. It's such an easy format. Anybody could make one of these games, and add their twist, any twist, mechanically, visually with handmade outsider art like Hylics, rhythm elements, it's so easy to make a standard one of these and then vary it. But look at these games. It really lays bare the creative nothing behind most wannabe devs' wherewithal. And now it looks like instead of a "survivors" being a format for untapped creativity, by democratizing-simplifying the central mechanic, it'll be another thing sucked into the third person action RPG genre. It shows you how many people who wanna make a game have no other goal than that in itself, and no reason to do it. These are the same people who'd have been saying "I wanna be a guitar player in a rock band" 50-30 years ago. "Oh yeah, what kind of rock songs?" "I don't care, guitar players get laid!" But game devs don't.

Just say "What crazy thing would I have wanted to center a video game around when I was nine years old?" and it'll be more worthwhile than the default. Go ask someone who's nine years old if you can't remember.

I mean it is easy to recreate but a lot of people fail at that or don't fully understand what made VS fun.

It is one of the bigger questions in game development of 'what is fun?' and as a lot of vs-likes have shown, they don't understand it
