I expected they'd be double dipping Casino Royale so I've held off buying it. Dr. Strangelove should be coming out 9th December and Taxi Driver will be released 3rd February.

I just watched Rambo's video commentary and loved being able to see Sly watching the film and looking up to to tell you some wild story about putting together the movie. They actually pause the movie several times to go full screen with the commentary and show brief interviews with the rest of the cast elaborating on Stallone's stories.

I should have, I suppose I do not entirely regret it, but it would be nice with the higher cost of Blu-Rays if they didn't already pull the "SPECIAL EDITION GOTCHA!" stunts that always happened with DVD editions.

Amazon has already shipped my pre-orders for Hunt for Red October and Dark City, here's to hoping the HD transfer is really well done.

Man you're just taking huge unnecessary chances blind-ordering. I don't know what kind of TV setup you have, but it's really obvious on mine when I get a substandard transfer. I'm thinking of Dark City here, which had one of the worst DVD transfers I've ever seen.

Several studios are lazy enough to just throw DVD masters on a blu-ray disc, and unfortnately people still buy that poo poo up because they don't know any better. I never, ever buy a BR movie without getting reviews of the transfer quality first.

The difference here is that this isn't a direct rerelease, this is the first time the Directors Cut has been released. Naturally, the chances are higher of it being mastered a lot better than the transfer used for the old dvd. Not to mention it's being released through New Line, which fairly consistantly has had a good track record.

But here's what I really want to see: live music DVDs with proper support for multiple angles. I've been watching Iron Maiden's Death on the Road DVD this past week and I'd love it if they released it on Blu-ray with the option of watching one guy all night. They have enough cameras and footage to make it work, and it's be awesome to just watch Steve Harris all night long. That dude is worth the price of admission all by himself.

To make this post a bit more worthwhile, I grabbed Beowulf on blu-ray today, and it's exactly what I hoped for. I was worried when Paramount switched to blu that they'd skimp out just to get movies out, but I'm glad they worked it all out, because the Picture in Picture is great. I really enjoy watching the actors in mocap suits acting out entire scenes with wireframe props, while seeing the final result right next to it. I know some people said to them PiP doesn't matter to them, but honestly, I couldn't feel more opposite. I absolutely eat these things up.

Well I have one of the early DVD releases for this movie, it's one of my all time favorites. I'd buy this and Equilibrium on the spot even if the HD transfer was only slightly better than DVD. Also this is the director's cut, and IIRC my edition doesn't even have much in the way of special features. So it's not a wasted "blind" buy, but if the transfer was good I would be far happier. Those screens look a little nicer but not THAT much nicer hopefully the DC is good too.

The trailer on one of the movies I have looked pretty good. If you've never seen Paprika but like "some" anime like Ghost in the Shell, Mononoke, or Mind Games then you may like this, although I thought by the end the entire film loses focus. One of the Blockbusters by my house just received a pile of Blu-Rays in they now have nearly 2 entire walls filled with BD (Including the nice long list for BB-Online).

The restored version (on the 2-disc SE) looks excellent, so I'd imagine a BluRay would make it look even better. The negative was lost, but Sony restored the film from Kubrick's own 35mm archival print. Obviously, it was in nearly perfect condition. The DTS 5.1 remix is surprisingly good, too.

It would be interesting if Sony could convince Kubrick's estate to include the pie fight scene. A print exists at the Museum of Modern Art, so it's just a matter of transfering it the OK is given. Although, WB didn't do the same for 2001's cut scenes, despite having the 65mm color separations on hand to transfer.

Yeah I can understand that, sometimes even a mediocre HD transfer with a few special features beats a barebones DVD. The thing that pisses me off is when they realize their mistake and pop out a remastered HD version shortly after (Full Metal Jacket, The Fifth Element (yes I know Sony made good on the TFE fuckup))

I know we all knew this was coming, but I hadnt seen an official announcement yet:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/s...in_October/1944

Ending months of anticipation, Warner has confirmed a mid-October Blu-ray release for the 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection.'

Long one of Warner's most oft-requested Blu-ray "catch up" titles, the studio previously released the 'Matrix' films on HD DVD in two expansive box sets, the five-disc 'Complete Matrix Trilogy' and the even more extensive seven-disc 'Ultimate Matrix Collection.'

Now Warner has finally earmarked an October 14 Blu-ray arrival for 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection,' which will replicate the seven-disc configuration of the HD DVD version. (At presstime, Warner has not announced a companion 'Complete Matrix Trilogy' release for Blu-ray.)

Full specs for Blu-ray box set have not yet been revealed, but preliminary details tout "35 hours of extras" and In-Movie Experience picture-in-picture commentaries for all three films, and the full supplement package is expected to match those found on the HD DVD version.

Additional confirmed upgrades to the Blu-ray include a full 1080p presentation of 'The Animatrix' (the HD DVD was standard-def only) as well as a Digital Copy of the original 'Matrix.'

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray is $129.98.

As we await more details, you'll find the latest specs for 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under October 14.

I wish Perfect Blue would get a Blu-Ray release. The DVD is seriously lacking in the quality department, but goddamn is that a creepy film.

Harmonica

cinema is life, and vice-versa

Gotham Knight is an okay Blu-Ray. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's only a marginal upgrade on watching it on DVD (particularly since the DVD version is pretty good). Slightly sharper line drawing but also not great blacks (bunch of banding and bit of blocking).

The best hi-def 'toon (which frankly is a perrogative for something so spellbounding) is Persepolis. Pinsharp lines, perfect contrast with no crushing, it's 2D but it leaps out of the screen. Epic transfer for a must see movie.

Some random comments on hi-def stuff I've seen recently. BABEL (HD) is a loving amazing transfer, shows off the wide spectrum of film sources nicely. Not a fan of the film, but s'ok. But gorgeous to look at.

Gangs of New York (BR) is one of the ugliest transfers I've seen ever. It's muddy, blurry, over sharpened... I think it's simply a (bad) DVD upscale dumped onto BR. Worse than the version I've got on DVD, which I watch upscaled. AVOID YE LIKE THE PLAGUE.

If anyone was interested I think the Dark City DC is really good if you're a fan of the movie or even if you sort of enjoyed the film but thought it was perhaps too easy to follow. The transfer is excellent, commentaries, a DC pop-up fact track as to what was changed and why with an occasional side note here and there. It's Blade Runner DC-esque in that the opening narration is gone entirely and some scenes are simply extended while they've also rearranged some scenes entirely that build more mystery. I am WAY more happier with Dark City on Blu-Ray than with my old DVD.

Hunt for Red October is a mixed back, sometimes it looks really good while a lot of the shots in the subs and in other darker areas seems to have a lot of noise (which is my complaint about the DVD version). Both are quite skimpy on the extra features. However it is a much needed step up from the DVD copy I had.
