Jif is a cleaning product. GIF stands for graphics interchange format, so it is pronounced gif. If it stood for giraffe interchange format maybe there would be an argument for pronouncing it jif, but it doesn't so the creator of GIF is a git.

both of them are words in the english dictionary that are used in everyday speech and the english language has loving always been a smattering of practically every single european language
