Here is the latest model run from GFS showing a trend toward landfall and then a complete stall:

That region goes underwater with modest sea rise anyway, this is good foreshadowing do you remember when Hurricane Katrina broke the Bush administration

I read that areas at landfall are expecting some 2-4 feet of rain over the course of the weekend it's hard to imagine the scale of that much water falling from the sky everything's bigger in texas

Nebakenezzer posted:That region goes underwater with modest sea rise anyway, this is good foreshadowing The flooding from this is going to be loving insane and I don't think media is properly playing up the threat. People are mostly concerned about wind speeds and storm surge not the historic amounts of rain they are about to see. GOES-16 has been showing some nice convection going off on the W side for a while. I'll be curious to see how much it strengthens throughout the night: http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/exper/?parms=gulf-13-24-1

Wrenever posted:I read that areas at landfall are expecting some 2-4 feet of rain over the course of the weekend Here's some hurricane porn for you https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Mitch quote:Due to its slow motion from October 29 to November 3, Hurricane Mitch dropped historic amounts of rainfall in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, with unofficial reports of up to 75 inches (1,900 mm). Deaths due to catastrophic flooding made it the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane in history after the Great Hurricane of 1780; nearly 11,000 people were killed with over 11,000 left missing by the end of 1998. Additionally, roughly 2.7 million were left homeless as a result of the hurricane. The flooding caused extreme damage, estimated at over $6 billion (1998 USD). This is the kind of setup we'd be talking about (although probably not quite as bad) if Harvey just set up a bit north of Corpus Christi and stalled out for a while or meandered along the gulf.

Areas in LA are already calling for mandatory evacuations http://www.katc.com/story/36213880/mandatory-evacuation-issued-for-some-parts-of-cameron-parish This will become the new normal as sea level rise inundates coastal Louisiana. Even threats of cyclones require evacuation.

NOAA provides storm surge inundation graphs. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/212153.shtml?inundation#contents One problem with landfall is that it's currently expected near high tide. I'm not sure of any products that provide freshwater flooding risk assessments from tropical cyclones. I'd be very interested in them because I have family in some of the zones of Houston that are modeled to get severe flooding.

I imagine it's really hard to accurately model flooding. It's so dependent on stuff like how saturated the ground is, amount of pavement, and especially the state of the drainage system. A neighborhood could be completely fine, or it could flood because somebody shoved some yard waste down the sewer.

mesoscale minute-resolution satellite imagery of Harvey has been beautiful over the past hour. You can easily see the northern portion of the eyewall closing up while rapid intensification begins: http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/exper/?parms=meso1-13-96-1. This is looking more like a cat4 landfall now. How it does through diurnal minimum tonight will be extremely telling of landfall strength. That's really cool. I've always thought of hurricanes like a whirlpool, pulling everything towards the centre through the spiral; but it looks as though the clouds/air are traveling in a counterintuitive direction to the rotation on the outer edges

00z GFS run is out, shows landfall on Corpus Christi with a stall and then returns to the gulf. All of the Texas Gulf into LA should be on standby to get drenched over the next week and a half. https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/analysis/models/?model=gfs®ion=eus&pkg=mslp_pcpn&runtime=2017082500&fh=24&xpos=0&ypos=125

Realtalk I don't think Corpus or Brownsville or Houston have the same kind of poverty that's rampant in cities like New Orleans which is good because it means fewer people will be trapped in the path of the storm due to economics. This could be pretty bad for a lot of people though, Houston is like what the fourth or fifth most populous city in the country?
