Detroit Metal City, maaaaan

War in the Pocket was a trip. I'm completely unfamiliar with Gundam 0083 or anything else related to it, so I wasn't sure what to expect, save that it would be something very very 80's. WitP delivered on that front, alright. The story didn't grab me right away, but Alfred was just so, so into military poo poo and idolizing soldiers and mobile suits and poo poo that I knew the poo poo was gonna hit the fan sometime soon, so when It finally did, I was hooked. It leans a little hard on tragic coincidence at the end, but those last couple scenes really got to me. I think it's that last little bulletpoint of dark irony that closes the OVA that really pushed it over the edge for me. Haha, don't worry Al, there'll just be another war sometime soon!

Cross Ange episode 21. Taken completely by itself, Momoka's dath was totally badass. Stabbing someone through the chest with a sword while magically controlling a car so it rams into them from behind at the same time, throwing both herself and him off a cliff. That was great. But in the context, it's loving terrible. They have established over and over again that Embryo can't be killed. Every loving character has killed him ten goddamn times now, and then he's just instantly standing ten feet away, fine. They have shown this over and over again. So for a major character to sacrfice herself to kill him is the dumbest goddamn thing, because everybody knows that killing Embryo is pointless! It just make her look suicidal, because she knows that her sacrifice is meaningless.

Cross Ange epsiode 23. It's a small thing, but I really liked that wen Momoka and the human officer from Arzenal met up again, they both were relieved to see that the other was alright. For a long time they were the only humans on Arzenal, and especially with the officer's racism, it'd make sens that a friendship of sorts would form between them offscreen. It was just a neat little bit of character development for the sake of character development, and that's my favorite thing in robot shows

Also, this isn't me cherry picking a particularly bad frame here, this is just what characters in Cross Ange look like when they're more than five feet away from the camera

I finished Cross Ange. I liked it. Aside from a few dud episodes it was pretty entertaining, the bad guy was impressively loathsome, and Ange was a great main character. They set up beforehand that Tusk wanted to open a little cafe and live there with her, and she was like, that sounds nice, but at the end, when Momoka says, what now Ange? she's like, "I'm gonna found a new nation of tough bitches, and you're all my subjects" "but what about the other world we all came from?" "I don't care, gently caress them" smash cut to Ange's spoiled little sister shooting looters in the devastated ruins of her kingdom. That was great.

Speaking of which, I watched the first episode, and it was really heart warming. The family situation where everyone except Daikichi was ignoring Rin hit close to home. My first cousin once removed was largely overlooked as a kid, except my my grandmother, who married into the family. Seeing that same dynamic here felt uncomfortably familiar, but Rin warming up to Daikichi was really adorable. I definitely think I'm going to enjoy this.

Pretty straightforward plot-wise, but definitely visually interesting. I loved the varied designs of the plants, plant people, and architecture (more flora?). It wouldn't have surprised me at all to learn that Masaaki Yuasa was the director...but nope although it appears that he did do an upcoming one.

I really didn't like the first few episodes. I think I would have preferred it if the first episode either started with the flashback or the flashback were spread across the series as the events became relevant. Even some introspective commentary or something to make it seem more flashbacky would have done wonders. As it is Chihayafuru failed the three episode test for me by hinting at so much during the first half of the first episode and then ignoring everything for the next two and a half.

Then episode four and five made me realise that I was being offended by an anime dropping plots for a few episodes because everything else was so good it actually sticks out instead of just being a thing that anime does. It feels so much like the early parts of Your Lie In April too, which does not hurt at all. This is definitely something I'll be watching the rest of.

Well episode 4 of Boogiepop Phantom was certainly a thing :suspense:. A nerdy teenage shut-in gets given an aromatic drug to give him confidence. And it turns into reality blurring between his obsession with the digital waifu on his PC and a new girl working as a waitress for the restaurant he cooks at. It's a fascinatingly unwholesome watch the whole way through, especially because half the time they distort his voice just for the extra layer of creepy :stare:.

I've seen the first ep of Kino's Journey and it seems like a cool, mellow show. Just a traveller roaming the world, discovering odd cultures. The only problem was that Hulu only has the dub which is by ADV and it STINKS!!!! I dunno what hermes sounds like in the original but they sound terrible in the dub. So if you have access to it some other way then maybe go with that.

Since I didn't give a recommendation last time, i didn't get one for my list, but that's okay because I've been watching them all anyway. Well the first episode of them.

My Love Story - So it's weird because this is obviously highly recommended by a lot of people but I wasn't quite feeling this one yet. Maybe it's because it's trying to do shojo from the male POV, or just that the characters aren't very developed yet. I'm gonna keep watching more though.

Death Parade - What I like about Death Parade is that it almost feels like a procedural, where a mystery is slowly unraveled right until the end. I dunno if the amnesiac device is going to be used in every episode to the same effect, but I'm super interested in this.

Parasyte - A little on the fence with this because I dig sort of the odd body horror and the conflict between the protagonist and his new hand friend, but I also heard that it starts to lose its grip in the second half, so I'm tentatively on board for now.

Rideback - I think I'm more into this than I thought I would be, since mecha is not usually my thing, but I would like to see just what sort of show this ultimately is, because the first episode did not give a whole lot away, just essentially a chase sequence.

Shirobako - As an animator, it's interesting to see a dramatized but realistic portrayal of the industry from another sector, although I never had to deal with the sorts of crazy struggles that a Japanese studio has, having deadlines that I think would kill american animators dead into the ground buried dead murdered. Then I saw that chart of the salaried positions on Shirobako and that felt even worse.

Snow White with the Red Hair - Hey whoa, a princess story with some agency, I dig it. She is vaguely saved at the end of the first episode but only because she didn't know about Zen's immunity. Otherwise I thought it was refreshing. On board for this train.

Yona of the Dawn - This is sort of the other side of the princess story railroad tracks. It does seem like Yona is going to take charge of her life later on, but in the first episode it's just a flashback and she is just sort of at the mercy of the storytellers and also depicted as a little too stereotypical of a shojo protag. Tentatively on board.

Terror in Resonance - Hmmmmm... I think I can get into this if it's equal parts detective and equal parts terrorist. I'm not sure yet. There's not enough to go on so far.

Barakamon - CUTE AS gently caress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you wanna say "watch 5 episodes of that!" to any of the ones I mentioned above, go for it. I'm also gonna try out Bodacious Space Pirates, GunXSword, Rolling Girls, Another, and Mushishi. I already know Mushishi is pretty dope from how everyone hypes it up.

I watched the first two episodes of Love Live, and it's suprrisingly good. I wasn't really expecting much from an anime that's just one wing of a massive waifu marketing machine, but it was really solidly made. Lots of good energy, the episodes have a good, fast pace, the characters are characterful, except that one chick who's the dean's daughter, she's pretty bland.

Nowhere near enough Rin though.
