fundamentally a lot of people want to be able to watch perv anime AND be unproblematic so they mostly just talk about how 'funny' or 'actually its really interesting underneath the surface' while yelling about stuff they dont like

At least Gigguk is like "I don't care." (Although of course under no circumstances do you gotta hand it to Gigguk.)

I actually watched that Gigguk video about Fate to see where he's at creatively and I don't understand how this man can keep a straight face yelling about his fetishes when he cannot commit to his own comedic bits for more than 20 seconds. Almost every single joke ends with him breaking out in giggles, unless he cuts away really fast, and they're not even particularly good jokes to begin with.

america did not actually block hentai. some american credit card companies have started to block payments to a bunch of random japanese sites. some that allow porn, some that are focused on porn, but also some that don't even host porn, like niconicodouga (a video site that was the japanese youtube equivalent for a while but japan has adopted youtube these days so while it still sees some use its more of a secondary video hosting site.)

this is of course dumb when people can still use their visa to buy hentai games on steam (and as mentioned nnd doesnt have anything more sexual than what you can dig up on youtube) but it does not function as a mass ban on the concept of whacking it to tifa lockhart

Gigguk's a weird watch for because he alternates between annoying the poo poo out of me and bringing attention to stuff I would have missed; his videos on Oshi no Ko and Frieren before they got anime adaptations were how I found out they existed, and he recently did one on Beat and Motion that I liked (I was already reading it, B&M's pretty good).

Out of the Trash Taste boys, the best one is Joey tbh. He doesn't do much in anime content these days, but he does breakdowns of news stories in Japan that catch his interest, and that's at least different from most of the stuff on my feed

Also hazel: She's just vibing with the weird nonsense she stumbles across to preserve for the Internet Archive.

Also to the point of misinformation about anime production that gets spread around online, I think the other big thing that contributes to that is that a lot of stuff like creator interviews that could provide context into things like authorial intent are typically in Japanese and that usually imposes just enough extra effort to keep a lot of people from doing actual fact-checking. I think my favorite example of fans extrapolating dumb bullshit about an anime creator was when the much maligned 4Kids dub of One Piece was being released you started to see fans claim that Oda made Laboon integral to Brook's backstory because he was personally unhappy with the job the 4KIds dub was doing and wanted to spite them (Since they excised the episodes that introduced Laboon for the dub). It's your typical anime fan misinformation with a bit of "America is the center of the world" mentality, because of course the creator of One Piece is specifically invested in the English localization of his work to the point that he'd alter future story decisions in response to it!

I think the only Hazel video I've seen is like about these amature tokusatsu projects that were about robot girls as main characters or like ultraman homages or something like that. It was interesting to see the ammount of effort people put into stuff that really wouldn't be that known outside of their fan circles.

that’s basically how he talked up Onimai, a show that could be read in different ways, but the way he papered over the problematic aspects of the show was pretty irresponsible without any content warning

say what you will about anime feminist (and boy have I! “blowjob knees”) but they at least have a content warning for every show — and then you can just ignore whatever they actually think about the show

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

tbf im not exactly a fan of content warnings in a like, hard list format where it still kinda reads as opinion, but i think theres a difference between that and 'this show contains a loving closeup of a 14 year olds breasts'

but its sort of the thing where if they just actually said what the show was itd be harder to flex the kind of position they want to pretend they have

The 7th Guest

i'm doing a video about spring anime now, and i basically will just say when I don't like a show's fanservice, especially if it goes over the line. i mentioned in the spring season thread that Livia's fanservice in Salad Bowl puts me off, for example, even though that character is (afaik) an adult. so i would mention that, and also have CW: Nudity on the same screen as the logo of the anime -- but through just that one episode, that was basically the only thing objectionable about it

of the 6 shows i've watched so far, that's the only one that i think needed any warning for a normie. kajiu no 8 has gore and body horror but idk if that's worth a CW because it's a kaiju action show going for the attack on titan crowd, so like... yeah.

e: you're right though that sites like animefem will have questionable CWs. like in their spring article, some CWs include "excessive drool" and "unsafe working conditions". unless i'm going to be physically IN those unsafe working conditions i do not think that that is a legitimate warning lol

ive mentioned this in this thread before i think but strike witches is a show where girls dont wear pants and fly around with propeller legs and are vaguely based on ww2 pilots and fight aliens. its like primo insane otaku bait that is impenetrable to anyone outside that.

after seeing it in theaters anno called the director of the strike witches movie to say he loved it and it was better than any of the EVA movies and that they should hang out sometime and then when the dvd came out the strike witches director came over to annos place to be like 'thank you for your kind words, heres a free copy of one of the first printings of the dvd as a gift' and anno was like 'oh, thank you. however, ive already preordered 5 copies of it'

https://twitter.com/Newposter2/status/1789346021668974730

This may be controversial to say, but a sentiment I see in response to the 'NGE is anti-otaku' and other takes like it is that the people who push things like that want to like 'nerd' stuff, but they're either too embarrassed to just embrace it, or they don't want the potential stigma that comes with liking said things. It's a 'trying to eat you cake and still have it' kind of thing.

I followed the Mirror Moon translation saga through HS and was hype as hell when the HF route translation was finally released. It's the dumbest bullshit ever written and it kicks rear end.

There's been like a billion spinoffs and poo poo I have no visibility into or interest in whatsoever but the VN was good and I liked the F/Z and UBW/HF adaptations.
