ilmmaf posted:http://annarbor.craigslist.org/mcy/2889439342.html No fairings, aftermarket gauge cluster (can't be sure of actual mileage), and a bike that wasn't that great in the first place. The motor is essentially a sleeved down version of the older 900, so it's as heavy without having the same power. Not sure what they're worth in good condition, but I wouldn't pay more than ~1.2k for that one, if even.

Trying to get a friend of mine on the road for cheap and easy, this here seems like a good deal but I've no experience outside of...uh. Harleys. Ahem. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/mcy/2926906264.html It seems like a good deal, but I've no idea if hondas in that year are horrible pieces of crap or what. Was going to go with him to take a look at the bike and I'd like to go out there and say something other than 'yep, that's a honda. Sure is. It's got the vroomy bits on it and everything.'

Looks to be in great condition, the forward controls and high bars may be a bit annoying for a newer rider though.

Yeah, the miniapes and controls were not something I'd start with but he's 6'4 so I'm not sure he would be comfortable on mids, as I've let him sit on mine and he looks a bit like he's about to knee himself in the face. It's a pretty bike, certainly, I'm a little worried about that droopy rear indicator, though.

He mentions that in the ad, though. Looks like he kicked it a good one. At MSF I kicked mine every time, it was impossible to miss it. ![]() I really wish he was selling it in my area, you and I could fight over it. I like it.

He may have a bit better time on a standard or dual-sport. The low-seat height on cruisers tends to put the butt closer to the controls, magnifying the problem for long-legged people. The rear indicator was probably from a parking lot drop. The stalks they used on those flashers are apparently reinforced with butter, and pretty much any drop, regardless of severity, will snap them. edit: I didn't think about the kick. I know I've launched a few off my bike from particularly enthusiastic dismounts.

True, I've mentioned this to him, but he seems to have fallen in love with the shadow, knees in the face or no. And it may be better to have it pre-busted as I'm sure he'll drop the poor thing, as I did my first bike.

Bought my Triumph Bonneville today. It's a beautiful bike and I had a blast on the ride back. http://www.eastbayace.com/2012/03/24/2010-triumph-bonneville-2320-mi-6995/ It's expensive for a used bike, but 1. it's barely used, and 2. there are no used Bonnevilles at a better price around here. I'm happy with it, like the aftermarket seat (they also threw in the original seat), luggage rack--even the little windscreen, which I had originally thought would suck, has grown on me.

What would you pay for a GS500? Right now there are some late-model (like '99-'02) GS500Es (the naked ones) for around $1700, and the GS500Fs ('04+ fully faired) are $2200-3200. But then there's a '91 for way cheaper. I prefer the way the naked models look, but not by much. Examples: '99 GS500e, 9000mi, all stock, $1650obo http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/mcy/2927819452.html '04 GS500F, 15k, $2150obo. ~$500 cheaper than all the other GS500Fs. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcd/2918883619.html '91 GS500e, unknown mileage, list of recently-replaced/upgrade parts, mismatched tank, $900 http://skagit.craigslist.org/mcy/2928219000.html I think I missed out on the Bandit 400 that turned up a little while ago, though now there's a cheap Bandit 600 with some caveats: it's a '96 with only 3600mi and "needs some work to be rideable." So many options in this big, brave world of used mis-size motorbikes ![]()

Hello I am a prospect new driver (I WILL take the MSC before I actually start to drice) and I am in a bit of a pickle now. You see I have been looking at bikes on my area for the last few weeks without any intentions of buying one. But then I say this one: http://maine.craigslist.org/mcy/2938728911.html For Sale: 1980 Suzuki GS850 with fairing, nice GS seat, good tires, new battery (AGM) last year. The exhaust has good rust free pipes. It has been a project of mine that has just sat around the garage for a while. I cleaned and set up the carbs last year also. I just do not have the motivation to drive it or put the fairing back on. I have moved on to another project. I have the title from the previous owner all signed. I am located in York Maine. Got a few extra parts and a service manual to go with it. I am looking to get $700.00. It has 24,000 miles on it and sounded very good when I ran it in the garage. Bad things: - Not gonna ride it till I pass the MSC - Will sit out in the elements for a month unattended out in the elements. - Its mostly an unknown - A bit too big for a bigginer bike. - Ugly rear end fairing. Good things: - Local motorcycle expert says this is a very good price if the bike runs OK. - Said dude is willing to go with me, test ride it and even bring it back to my apartment complex id I buy it. - As above he told be they are great bikes and he also told me it might be a bit too big for my. - Apparently they are very reliable and I am very willing to learn how to tinker and fix poo poo. - poo poo I just loving like the style of the bike, I mean gooddaam look at that thing.

I agree with your mechanic friend that it is a little too big to be starting on. I would like to recommend something with less than 40 horsepower and 400 pounds...this is 77hp and 540lbs. I am more conservative on power than some but 540 lbs is pretty heavy for what it is. It's also far from the only '80s GS you'll see for 700 dollars, so don't be too concerned about that. I personally would wait for something a little smaller and lighter to show up. Also I think it's z3n who has like ten old GSs so maybe he will chip with some useful info. Other than that, buy a service manual and a basic toolkit, have your mechanic check it over and dive in. Lots of good info here that can answer a lot of your question. Ride with common sense and I think you might get away with the "bigger" bike. I don't know the numbers but I strongly doubt it's over 80hp.

I'm in a similar situation. I've been doing my homework on what I'd like to have to start on and what I'd like to work up to, and I have no intentions of buying until I complete the MSF in June (The wait will be crushing). My candidates for a starter bike are a GS500 and a Seca II, unfortunately the GSes in my area are worth their weight in gold it seems. I stumbled upon this the other day and have been reading up on them, but I can't spring for a bike yet since I don't even know if I'll like riding. Well, I will but that is my excuse. http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/2935599087.html That Person posted:I have a 1994 Yamaha XJ600S for sale for $1600 obo. It has just over 17,000 miles on it and it is inspected until June. I just put a new clutch, new battery, and new chain on it. Also got the seat re-upholestered with a new cushion and leather for a very comfortable ride, and flushed all fluids and refilled them.. The bike is all black and runs great. This is a great starter bike. Please e-mail me with any other questions. Thank-You Now what's a high mileage for a bike? I know there's a few guys with naked Secas on here, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little curious as to how costly/difficult it would be to set myself up with one of those sexy naked conversions. Pipedreams gone wrong, I guess.

Dzus posted:http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/2935599087.html 17,000 miles is low, about 2,000 miles less than my 1996 Bandit. It depends hugely on how well-maintained the bike is, but anything less than 50,000 miles shouldn't be a problem as long as the maintenance intervals have been kept.

Starter bike options that have recently popped up for a friend: 2002 Buell Blast, 2800 Miles, $1200 http://orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/2924121591.html Ninja 250, 7000 miles, $1850 - dented can, really dirty chain? http://orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/2940268899.html She's short, 5'3", so that eliminates many options right off the bat. Hey guys I am a new rider that was looking into buying a bike in the Cincinnati area. I was looking at the 2012 Honda 250r but a buddy of mine said looking into used bikes would be best for a starter because I would more than likely knock mine over. Of those 3, the naked '99 seems the best, the 91 has seen some better days and with a guy doing a bunch of work himself, who knows what he's hosed up. The F is already removed, but you can get the naked cheaper and I think they're nicer overall and the plastics don't really add much. I think about $1500 for the 99 is a pretty good deal if you can work it and if he's done regular maintenance.

In the future I'd only discuss money in person if you're trying to get them to lower their price. 2250 is what he told you over the phone, people like me might just tell you to gently caress off. I've been looking for bikes for a friend in Cincy as well. There was an old Ninja going for a song a month ago but it's probably gone now. You're in the worst time to buy, price wise, right now. Edit: I couldn't find it searching CL but I did find the link in a text I sent, worth a call at least http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/2889673209.html nsaP fucked around with this message at 06:22 on Apr 8, 2012 |

Show up with cash in your pocket. That speaks really loudly--it's what made me drop the price on my bike from $950 to $700. People on craigslist will gently caress around forever; if you actually want to buy the bike, just arrange a time to check it out and come with money in hand. Haggling over the phone takes no effort; actually coming out is a commitment. Go over with $1700 or whatever you want to pay, test ride the bike, and say you'll give him $1700 cash right now. Speaking as someone who just sold a bike, being right there with real money in your hand makes a huge impact. I spent weeks loving around before a guy (new rider) showed up with cash in hand.

I'm taking a look at this on Monday (with a buddy who knows bikes, because I'm a tad ignorant, mechanically). Does this seem like a decent price? For reference, I'm looking for a standard-style bike, 750cc or so, for hopefully less than $2000, but I've got a couple hundred dollars wiggle room, though I'd rather not have to use it. It'll be my second bike (first was an '83 Nighthawk 550, and I wanna go a bit bigger so I can do some road trips this summer with my old man). If this deal sucks, I'd appreciate any help finding something fitting those criteria near Portland, OR. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcd/2942654408.html

I haven't seen the bike in person, otherwise i'd probably be too tempted, i'm going to wait a while. The Rotax Vtwins in those are pretty bulletproof. I'd ask the last time the valves were checked, i'm not sure on the intervals I think it's every 12k or so.

So I wanted to do a quick sanity check. I read the first page and the last 10 pages and didn't see this mentioned at all. What is the consensus on cheap Chinese bikes? Specifically I am looking at the Lifan 200 GS. I want a scooter to commute 2.4 miles to work with, downtown. Top speed is 30-35 mph with no highways. I hate the vespa form factor and top tank mopeds cost $1500 here in Dallas. The bike is 17hp and 290lbs with 29" standover height. I am about 5'11" with a 30" inseam and 165lbs. I figure I would put just under 1000 miles a year on it riding 3 days a week. Also there's a Lifan dealership 20 minutes from my house. The 200 GS has an out the door price of just under $1800. From what I've read, these are basically Chinese clone of an early 90s Honda and in fact the carb and other parts can and do bolt right up. So for my use, is this at all acceptable? Lifan has been selling these since 2009 and I don't see any rash of complaints about them. Or is the chain going to explode like a clamore mine the second I hit a bump?
