Even if you can get to the point where you dismiss his outlook on race as well-intentioned but misinformed (like I think most people do with Barkley), he also has 0 redeeming qualities in any of his other "areas of expertise," so... He's a really good The Wire quoter, I guess, which truly makes his site Black Grantland

It's so bizarre that his management style is basically trying to emulate what he considers the ideal coach. Of a sports team. He lacks self-awareness so much that he fails to realize that A) not only did the great coaches he's trying to emulate pay their dues and EARN the respect as well demand it, but B) demanding respect and being a hardass don't work unless you actually have some kind of skill/talent for motivating others. Yes Vince Lombardi or whoever he thinks is a great leader succeeded while being a tough sonofabitch, but a poo poo ton of other shlubs failed while being a tough sonofabitch because they lacked any sort of talent and earned zero respect.

Also, sports has decades of an institutionalized machismo Tough Leadership legacy that's made that an acceptable managerial style to a degree it isn't in the vast majority of the professional world. And even there, it's questionable whether or not it's actually effective

I actually had some hope for this idea when I first heard of it because he was always pretty good on radio/podcasts at finding interesting/funny people to talk to. That's obviously not even close to the same thing but even though he sucked he managed to surround himself with good people.

He was loving awesome at Foxsports. His Fox Sports podcast was my favorite podcast by far. It was off the chain. He has escorts who hosed athletes on it, his barber to insult Tim Tebow for an hour straight (Mike Irvin on that horse lookin' like he just ate a Jelly Donut), one time he just went on a 45 minute anti NCAA rant that was better than any other anti NCAA rant I ever read. He was on fire at Fox Sports.

For all of Whitlock's dumb sports analogies, I can't believe he didn't think of the one where the best athletes usually make the worst coaches. Whitlock is obviously a talented writer even if his opinions are the worst. Doesn't make him a good manager.

I don't think he's a talented writer. If he has a talent it is as provocateur, which in the world of 24 sports and ESPN is a lucrative one. But his writing is lame, tired, repetitive, and filled with inconsistencies. Mostly he just says stuff that Colin Cowherd wishes he could say.

I guess there's the occasional dogwhistling idiot like Cowherd, but for the most part most if their columnists seem moderate or slightly left leaning on most social issues. I think they like Whitlock because they like ridiculous takes that will spark conversation and create more content, regardless of the political slant.
