Even if you can get to the point where you dismiss his outlook on race as well-intentioned but misinformed (like I think most people do with Barkley), he also has 0 redeeming qualities in any of his other "areas of expertise," so...

He's a really good The Wire quoter, I guess, which truly makes his site Black Grantland

If nothing else that article makes it blatantly obvious that Whitlock has no concept of how to manage people. Those emails are so condescending and full of vitriol for no reason. That's not even getting into his whole weird self-obsession nonsense.

It's so bizarre that his management style is basically trying to emulate what he considers the ideal coach. Of a sports team.

He lacks self-awareness so much that he fails to realize that A) not only did the great coaches he's trying to emulate pay their dues and EARN the respect as well demand it, but B) demanding respect and being a hardass don't work unless you actually have some kind of skill/talent for motivating others. Yes Vince Lombardi or whoever he thinks is a great leader succeeded while being a tough sonofabitch, but a poo poo ton of other shlubs failed while being a tough sonofabitch because they lacked any sort of talent and earned zero respect.

Also, sports has decades of an institutionalized machismo Tough Leadership legacy that's made that an acceptable managerial style to a degree it isn't in the vast majority of the professional world. And even there, it's questionable whether or not it's actually effective

Didn't he lose a bunch of weight at some point? Not that he was ever close to thin or in shape but I thought he was a lot less round than he used to be. He should gain it all back, he didn't used to be quite this insane.

I actually had some hope for this idea when I first heard of it because he was always pretty good on radio/podcasts at finding interesting/funny people to talk to. That's obviously not even close to the same thing but even though he sucked he managed to surround himself with good people.

He was loving awesome at Foxsports. His Fox Sports podcast was my favorite podcast by far. It was off the chain. He has escorts who hosed athletes on it, his barber to insult Tim Tebow for an hour straight (Mike Irvin on that horse lookin' like he just ate a Jelly Donut), one time he just went on a 45 minute anti NCAA rant that was better than any other anti NCAA rant I ever read. He was on fire at Fox Sports.

Here's 70 pages of rules and quotes about how to be a leader and demonstrate leadership, because we're all about developing leaders here at The Undefeated, and by leadership I mean being a perfect automaton doing exactly what I say when I say it without questioning.

That he thought he could get Ta-Nahesi Coates for his project is just precious. Coates is the anti-Whitlock, pointing out with extraordinary power how the black-men-need-to-pull-up-their-sagging-pants rhetoric of people like Whitlock and Bill Cosby is utter and complete bullshit.

Edit: Beaten. Also the interesting thing to me is how his recruiting efforts went, contrarily to what Simmons did. It seems like Simmons got everyone he wanted by allowing them to maintain their own voice within the overall structure of Grantland. Whitlock wanted people to replicate his own voice.

It sounds like the way to be a great editor is to hire great writers and let them do their own thing with as little interference as possible. The thing I like about Grantland is how unique the pieces are. Sounds like Whitlock just wanted a site that would write a bunch of articles in his own voice.

It's also amazing that ESPN thought Whitlock could handle this. Never been a huge fan but he had his moments in the past as a writer. But he's a huge narcissist and that seems like an issue when you're in charge of other people.

I don't know if ESPN thought Whitlock could handle it, per se, so much as the old racists running the company agree with his racist opinions (and his ability to get pageviews). Surely they knew he's too much of an egomaniac to publish anything that disagrees with his biases. So with Whitlock, they get to have their cake and eat it: look progressive for creating a site centered on black people, but the site itself is committed to pushing a conservative/white-supremacist political agenda. Then if it fails, they can either scapegoat Whitlock for being terrible, or more insidiously scapegoat the entire black community for not supporting it.

For all of Whitlock's dumb sports analogies, I can't believe he didn't think of the one where the best athletes usually make the worst coaches.

Whitlock is obviously a talented writer even if his opinions are the worst. Doesn't make him a good manager.

BWV

I don't think he's a talented writer. If he has a talent it is as provocateur, which in the world of 24 sports and ESPN is a lucrative one. But his writing is lame, tired, repetitive, and filled with inconsistencies.

Mostly he just says stuff that Colin Cowherd wishes he could say.

I don't really care about his personal opinions so much as I think he would do a good job curating the site and luring better talent.

I've never really seen much evidence of ESPN having an especially conservative/racist agenda. I guess there's the occasional dogwhistling idiot like Cowherd, but for the most part most if their columnists seem moderate or slightly left leaning on most social issues.

I think they like Whitlock because they like ridiculous takes that will spark conversation and create more content, regardless of the political slant.

Simmons built a bit of a "us vs them" mentality that is conducive to a creative team. It was also pretty clear from the beginning he sold this as a place where the writers would have more freedom. Being self-centered isn't a detriment to being a good builder, but being a control freak who is trying to push an inflexible vision sure as poo poo is.
