So no go on that probably. It's been floating around that Dallas made a good offer for Thornton but he doesn't want to go waive his NTC either. Sounds more and more like they'll be looking for a short term good value UFA that can play 2nd or 3rd line - so Grabovski most likely.

Don Maloney doesn't expect any of the Coyotes UFAs(Vrbata, Moss, Greiss, Bissonette, Halpern) to return because they want too much money. I will miss Bissonnette but look forward to getting a backup goalie that doesn't poo poo his pants when leaned on and someone more consistent than Vrbata.Rutkowski posted:I'm still mad they missed out on Nylander.

Ginette Reno posted:Hornqvist put up 53 points in Nashville, and scores 20+ goals every year, so I'm pretty sure the difference between what he'll do and what Neal would have done will be minimal given the boost Hornqvist is likely to get playing on the Pens powerplay and with Crosby or Malkin. Hornqvist is also good in front of the net, something the Pens have lacked outside of Chris Kunitz. Neal is very much a perimeter player, albeit a damned good one. I always assumed Neal would be in high demand for offense-needy teams, especially if the GM just looked at goals and salary. Hornqvist could do good, but still seems like there was more to be had by talking to other teams. First substantial post-Shero move has me feeling a bit uneasy!

Anaheim has 20 million in cap space and like Perreault, DSP, Silf and Vatanen to sign. Time to sign some lovely defenseman to bad contracts who will be outplayed by Lindholm and Sami, it's the Murray way E: Please trade for Spezza, Bob. Kes-Spezza-Silf

CONTROVERSIAL OPINIONS INCOMING I suspect the Kesler trade was the best case scenario for Vancouver, or at least close to it. The guy didn't have a ton of trade value to begin with....big decline in production after some major injuries, pushing 30, 2 years left under contract. If he'd been out on the open market he could have brought more, but the market was so limited that his trade value was pretty limited. I would guess, best case scenario he'll be about a 50 pt player for the Ducks for 2 years (plus his excellent defense of course) and then he'll gradually turn into a Guy Carbonneau type of defensive specialist as he goes into his 30s, probably for a different team. Bonino seems to be a bit of a late bloomer and has some upside; not really sure why people are so down on him. He's not nearly as good as Kesler but when your options are so limited, getting a pretty solid 2/3 center with a bit of upside is a reasonable haul. I'm not really sure what else the Canucks could have done in that spot. The Neal trade seems decent from the Pens perspective to me. If they'd decided that Neal had to go, bringing in a guy like Hornqvist is a good change to make. I think the Malkin/Neal "chemistry" is pretty overrated; Malkin will produce with whoever he lines up with, and Neal will suffer big time not having a guy like that playing as his center. I'll do an avatar bet that Hornqvist puts up more goals and points than Neal does next season. I do not understand why the Leafs wanted Roman Polak but this Gunnarsson fellow seems like a very solid bottom pairing guy. Since we needed a 16 min LHD, pretty good pickup. Polak probably has the best combination of size, strength and speed in the entire of the NHL but he's still pretty bad despite this. I dunno.

So for the last few years I've had the opinion that Polak was an amazing stay at home guy who's been hosed by being paired with Jackman all this time. Is he actually legit bad?

there are defensemen who don't contribute any offense who are still good (stralman and hamonic come to mind on teams i like) but i wouldn't necessarily call them stay at home. polak's possession numbers aren't good and i don't think it's because of who he plays with.

Polak is a fine bottom pairing d to play sheltered minutes, but he's been getting worse and worse. There's really no way to defend the trade Toronto made, despite what Blues fans on HFBoards will tell you.

I think Polak is one of the best examples of why fighting is really more about technique than brute strength. He is probably one of, if not the, strongest guys in the NHL, but he can't really fight for the most part.
