Coyotes keep their streak alive by drafting Al MacInnis's son. Only a few years away from being able to assemble a team completely made up of star children.
Originally they went after Spezza and when that didn't work they made the trade for Neal. Getting both of them didn't seem to be Poile's plan.
I'm still mad they missed out on Nylander.

They could've had a lineup consisting of:
Domi-Samuelsson-Nylander
Murphy-MacInnis
Burke

and it would've been awesome.

Brodeur on Toronto or Pittsburgh would be incredible

According to Pierre Lebrun it turns out that Dallas is also on Spezza's no trade list with Nashville.

So no go on that probably. It's been floating around that Dallas made a good offer for Thornton but he doesn't want to go waive his NTC either. Sounds more and more like they'll be looking for a short term good value UFA that can play 2nd or 3rd line - so Grabovski most likely.

Don Maloney doesn't expect any of the Coyotes UFAs(Vrbata, Moss, Greiss, Bissonette, Halpern) to return because they want too much money. I will miss Bissonnette but look forward to getting a backup goalie that doesn't poo poo his pants when leaned on and someone more consistent than Vrbata.

Hornqvist put up 53 points in Nashville, and scores 20+ goals every year, so I'm pretty sure the difference between what he'll do and what Neal would have done will be minimal given the boost Hornqvist is likely to get playing on the Pens powerplay and with Crosby or Malkin. Hornqvist is also good in front of the net, something the Pens have lacked outside of Chris Kunitz. Neal is very much a perimeter player, albeit a damned good one.

I always assumed Neal would be in high demand for offense-needy teams, especially if the GM just looked at goals and salary. Hornqvist could do good, but still seems like there was more to be had by talking to other teams.

First substantial post-Shero move has me feeling a bit uneasy!

If you want a playoff disappearing act who is also invisible during about a third of the regular season, nothing is too much!

I'll miss him but he has been declining hard and fast and isn't worth what he is probably expecting.

Numbers haven't been put out anywhere that I've seen. The last time he went for a bigger deal was when he signed the disaster contract with Tampa. If Hemsky's agent is trying to get $5.5mil per I could see Vrbata asking for something around $6mil :retrogames:

Anaheim has 20 million in cap space and like Perreault, DSP, Silf and Vatanen to sign. Time to sign some lovely defenseman to bad contracts who will be outplayed by Lindholm and Sami, it's the Murray way

CONTROVERSIAL OPINIONS INCOMING

I suspect the Kesler trade was the best case scenario for Vancouver, or at least close to it. The guy didn't have a ton of trade value to begin with....big decline in production after some major injuries, pushing 30, 2 years left under contract. If he'd been out on the open market he could have brought more, but the market was so limited that his trade value was pretty limited. I would guess, best case scenario he'll be about a 50 pt player for the Ducks for 2 years (plus his excellent defense of course) and then he'll gradually turn into a Guy Carbonneau type of defensive specialist as he goes into his 30s, probably for a different team. Bonino seems to be a bit of a late bloomer and has some upside; not really sure why people are so down on him. He's not nearly as good as Kesler but when your options are so limited, getting a pretty solid 2/3 center with a bit of upside is a reasonable haul. I'm not really sure what else the Canucks could have done in that spot.

The Neal trade seems decent from the Pens perspective to me. If they'd decided that Neal had to go, bringing in a guy like Hornqvist is a good change to make. I think the Malkin/Neal "chemistry" is pretty overrated; Malkin will produce with whoever he lines up with, and Neal will suffer big time not having a guy like that playing as his center. I'll do an avatar bet that Hornqvist puts up more goals and points than Neal does next season.

I do not understand why the Leafs wanted Roman Polak but this Gunnarsson fellow seems like a very solid bottom pairing guy. Since we needed a 16 min LHD, pretty good pickup. Polak probably has the best combination of size, strength and speed in the entire of the NHL but he's still pretty bad despite this. I dunno.

Honestly, I've become more and more wary of the "stay at home guy". If you can't handle the puck, why are you on the ice?

Well okay then why do his possession stats suck so bad? I also can't remember him doing anything useful in the playoffs.

I think Polak is one of the best examples of why fighting is really more about technique than brute strength. He is probably one of, if not the, strongest guys in the NHL, but he can't really fight for the most part.

they needed to play hardball with kesler from the start, or just trade him for raw futures. bonino and sbisa are almost non-assets for the canucks right now

if they turned bonino into picks or whatever right after id be 'onboard' with the trade. its keeping an, at best, middle-six forward on the roster when he has value thats gonna gently caress us now and later

edit: ive also softened my stance on the vey trade. the potential value of a benning draft pick is somewhere around 10% of the norm so that pick would have guaranteed been spent on nothing. vey is at least a replacement level player, which is one roster spot benning can't fill with overpriced gritty garbage

Probably sitting on a beach somewhere not giving a poo poo. I never got the sense he was a career GM, he had some ideas he wanted to try out from his time as an agent and Aquilini decided to give him a shot. Sounded like by the end he was really fed up with all the politics and I doubt he'll be back in the league any time soon.
