I don't know but like 100% of Ariel's other beefs I'm sure it's dumb and makes everyone involved look stupider.

That said, Chael's comments on legacy were pretty cool+amusing.

EDIT:

Chael P. Sonnen posted:

As far as legacy goes, there was a time in my career I would get asked that Ariel, and I would get red hot. There was a time in my career everything pissed me off. Any question you asked me was going to set me off one way or the other, but that one specifically because I never got it. I had to deal with these other guys sitting around talking about their legacy like anyone should give a drat about them. I graduated high school. I loved high school. I donate to my old high school. I'd coach at my old high school. I'd do anything for my old high school, but the last thing I want to do is wear a God drat lettermen's jacket around when I'm out of high school, and there are guys that do it. Look, when you move on from something, move on.

"Sports are for kids. If you are able to stick around a sport and do it as an adult, if you are given an opportunity, you've made that kind of commitment to it, that's all house money. But, these guys that cling to it and want to be remembered for something they did in a kid's world, in a kid's sport, that is a weird thing to me and I never wanted to get trapped in it. I thought, 'I'm going to be a fighter for a very limited time and I'm going to have to move on and do real things in life.' Be a father. Be a husband. Be a member of my community. Do these things that really matter, not some sport I go do in a steel cage three times a year. And I was very defiant that I do not want to hear about someone else's alleged legacy, because I compare it to the guy out of high school riding around in his Trans Am with his gold lettermen jacket. I didn't want to be one of those guys."

I've put actual money on Chad Mendes (parleyed with robbie) because regardless of outcome it's the bet that makes sense using available evidence imo.

See this is just what I'm not seeing. If you want to pick Chad, that's fine because Chad is really loving good, and to be honest it does seem like most people around here are starting to acknowledge that Conor will at the very least be a tough out for him, but when this fight was first announced people basically laughed because Conor was going to get wrestled and die.

To me, when you use available evidence, here's what you come up with:

Things favoring Chad:

-He's fought better fighters than Conor. He was competitive in a cage with Jose Aldo for 30 minutes. His win over Llmas is probably better than Conor's over Porier.

-Conor is an unproven wrestler and Chad is, arguably, the best wrestler in the division except for maybe Frankie. This is a pretty big deal.

-He's the hardest hitter Conor has ever faced.

Things favoring Conor:

-Enormous reach advantage and knows how to use it.

-Fights southpaw and Chad hasn't seen a southpaw in forever. I think he'll paw at Chad's lead hand which is probably going to be super weird for Chad since he hasn't seen it in a while. If he had a full training camp to prepare it'd be different butttttttt

-Chad realistically probably had about 10 days to really train for this fight. I get that he's not a fat sack of poo poo like Johnny Hendricks and conditioning isn't an issue, but against a really odd southpaw fighter who's style is almost impossible to replicate, you would rather have a full camp to prepare. I know the embedded's and Chad's camp are trying to spin the short camp into a good thing but they are full of poo poo. Conor is one of the last guys you would ever want to face on such short notice

-Between Conor's wide stance and the distance he'll have on Chad (Conor also manages distance super well), Chad is going to have a really hard time with a double leg shot. To be honest, I don't remember the last time Chad single legged somebody. I think it had to be before the Guida fight but maybe I missed something. I'm not saying Chad doesn't have anything outside of a double leg because obviously he's a loving All-American wrestler and he knows different poo poo, but I think it's safe to say the double is his bread and butter and he'll have to use something else against Conor.

-Chad is as good as anybody in the division taking you down but he's not a guy with smothering top control. Opponents whom he takes down have been able to get up in alot of his fights.

-This is just my opinion but I think Conor's grappling is probably underrated. Yes, it's unproven but alot of people picking Chad seem to think Conor will simultaneously poo poo and piss himself when he hits the mat with no idea what to do next. Between what he showed against Holloway (I know Holloway isn't a great grappler but it's all we've seen) and training year round with a guy like Gunnar Nelson, I believe Conor will be at least passable on the ground.

Feel free to rip this apart and call me stupid and gay, but it's just my opinion that Conor has more things going for him in this fight than Chad does.

Chael skirts around this subject when FRB was on his podcast, but it has to do with when Ariel was temporarily let go from Fox for covering Bellator or whatever and I guess Ariel got mad that Chael didn't go to bat for him.

Then apparently they went at it during Chael's first podcast and actually had to re record the whole thing because of an extended argument/bad blood during it.

It's a good quote but it's Chael being Chael. He definitely cared a lot about winning and he's talked about other fighter's legacies so he isn't exactly clueless about what people are saying. Here's a quote from after Anderson Silva lost to Chris Weidman.

Chael P. Sonnen the baddest man on the planet posted:

I hope that Anderson retires because there is nothing left to him achieve. He made enough money to sustain a lot of generations of his family. I hope Anderson will look back and be proud of his career and understand that we all see him as great champion. I hope that he can understand that but I'm worried that he doesn't. Fighters in particular always stay in this sport too long, the same happens to me, it is hard to leave the Octagon because fighting is fun and is the only thing that we do.

Nothing yet.. I keep flip flopping on who i think is gonna win. Conors grappling is a lot better than dumbasses give him credit for but there is a huge gulf between that, and good enough to keep mendes off of him for 5 rounds. Theres just not enough tape on mcgregors wrestling to know for sure

BUT i just assumed mendes would be a slight favorite in which case id see no value in betting. But mendes being an underdog is pretty crazy and the line is trending up. If i can get mendes at like +175 i would be tempted to put a big bet on him, he only has to win like 35% of the time to profit at those odds and its really rare you see a line like that on such a proven guy. Id feel good about that bet and then if conor won id think wow.. Cool
