Because I absolutely did. I was on a first name basis with the local beat cops and we relied on each other for assistance on all the issues we faced together, they were a great group of guys. After that, when I was in CPS, I relied on calling dispatch almost daily for LEO assistance and they were 99.999% of the time helpful, professional and reliable as gently caress but I know that's sacrilege to this thread of sobbing little straight white male bitches crying about that time they got a parking ticket so

the latter half of my time at the shelter we had an LEO on detail every night. they were either useless or made situations worse. my more relevant experience with LEOs comes from my time as an EMT, where they'd be dispatched at the same time, called in, or call for us. a handful of them were decent. not great, just normal and decent people. unfortunately the majority were pieces of poo poo who routinely violated people's rights (later, in conversation with an LEO at the shelter I'd learn that they in fact relied on people being ignorant to their rights, and that people who weren't were nuisances they greatly hated). when they weren't violating a person's rights in order to secure some probable cause or whatever they could be found mocking or abusing suicidal/EDP patients, domestic violence victims, and drunks. i usually preferred them not to be on scene but i'm not gonna bullshit and say i never called them, but only cause we needed an extra set of hands or eyes; i'd have happily preferred another crew, it's just you avoid having two crews on one job whenever possible. as for the handful of good'uns they stood by and allowed all that poo poo to go on. but worse than that the good ones never moved up. they got poo poo details, poo poo shifts, and stayed where they were. the bastards all flew up the ranks

Ok, but that has nothing to do with the police. That statement was about the police, in the police thread, where we are talking about the police, not about private citizens shooting burglars, but police shooting people.

You think cops go out into the scary world alone and armed with only a gun.? They've got a buddy and a taser, mace, and a beating stick. There are many ways to prevent conflict. That's why every other first world country has exponentially less police shootings. The problem in America is the police culture and their us vs them mentality.

the cops told people for two hours to leave the area and people kept playing the cross the street game with them

told to leave, go across the street

told to leave from there, cross another street

no one ever left the area until they got carted out in vans

Tasers are unreliable, mace is only effective over time and only against people who feel pain (i.e. not people on dissociatives or amphetamines), and batons are even less effective unless bones are broken or the CNS is damaged. As sad as it is, the only reliable man-portable tool for incapacitation is the firearm. And sometimes an officer does have to incapacitate someone because it is not their job to avoid conflict, it is to arrest suspected criminals and bring them before the judiciary.

What jurisdiction do you live in where the police officers always have a partner with them? Genuinely curious.

The amount of cop deaths in countries that don't use guns must be comparable to that of deaths by cop in the states, no doubt.

It's not so much partners, but backup is only a radio call away and if you can't not shoot someone for 10 minutes tops while waiting for someone to arrive then dang. Also nobody is going to complain if a cop breaks a dude who's trying to kill the cop's leg with a baton. It's a far better scenario than one that ends with a corpse.

I volunteered at a food bank for a while, and was pretty shocked at the crap homeless people were expected to be grateful for. Pretty much everything was expired. Some stuff was clearly moldy or smelled bad. They were expected to line up quietly and take it because, being homeless means you don't deserve to eat non-perished foodstuffs, I guess?

I ran into more than one volunteer that were the inspiration porn types. They just wanted to have their picture taken there so they can post it on FB and look good with their employers or school.

If I had to deal with that poo poo every time I was hungry, I'd be an rear end in a top hat too.
