Trast posted:So are we looking at Aldo/Edgar II or something like Edgar/McGregor? hopefully they just say gently caress you to frankie so we can see an interesting fight that didn't already happen. aldo/mcgregor should be such a no-brainer at this point. it will either be a changing of the guard, or it will be aldo's silva/sonnen moment. regardless of the outcome, it will make a lot more people care about featherweight than edgar's tenth title fight.

on the wmma/low standards note from yesterday, i think last night was another example of that how in the gently caress was vanzant/curran the fotn? I can think of at least 3 better fights on that card after having watched it: Cuddle Bear/Dagestani Joey B/Ortiz Frankie/Cub Bullshit imo

Mr. Nice! posted:That was the best neck crank since Maia's where he squeezed the blood out of the dude's nose. Frankie's corner kept telling him between rounds that he needed to finish Swanson, and I think he had that on his mind as the fight wore on. He'd gotten into good positions and tried to finish by gnp and rear naked earlier in the fight but not quite managed it, and then at the very end he took Cub's back and got in another spot where he could finish. Right then he heard the ten second warning and I think he must have just decided to go for broke, grab Cub's head and twist it as hard as he could because there was no time for anything else.

The UFC twitter was also making much of the crowd reaction during that fight, which actually seemed pretty energetic considering it was the second bout of the night. There were some boos during the other candidates that people are listing here.

I'm just looking for a pattern in how they did hand it out. It could be that the main criteria is the fight which contributes the most to it being a fun live event.

Bubba Smith posted:The coolest thing Frankie Edgar did was making sure his name will live on forever cause I don't see anybody ever getting a later finish than him unless they make title fights take more rounds, which I doubt. It's possible that someone pulls off a KO in the very last 3 seconds of the fifth round in a final fury of punches but 90% of the time both fighters are too tired and they just circle around each other cause they know they get to raise their arms up soon. Long live Frankie Edgar in the history books. I really wish they would make all main card fights 5 rounds and title fights 7

Yeah, I think if there's a fighter involved in a bout who's ranked in the top 5 of his division, his/her fight should be 5 rounds. If they can't do 5 against someone else, they're not going to go 5 against the champ. That said, I wouldn't apply that to HW's because they can barely do 2 as it is.

Regarding the latest stoppage in history - wasn't Thiago Silva/Machida the latest in terms of SECONDS not rounds? That was literally at the bell. I loved that knock out! I laughed pretty hard at the comment about all of the 7 second knock outs being Canadians. Wonder why that is? I'm glad the Vanzant fight got fight of the night because as an entertainment point of view it was the most exciting back and forth all night. The other girl also took like 20 knees to the face so there is that too. Good night of fights. Can't wait to see what develops in the featherweight division from this. I hope Siver beats McGregor but that doesn't even seem like an option at this point. I bet when that fight happens he will be like a 5 to 1 underdog because of the hype train and the fact that McGregor is well kinda good.
