"Oh, how convenient. It's always one of your lackeys that gets their hands dirty, isn't it, Barnabus? And whenever your lackies look like they're having second thoughts, oddly, some mysterious accident or murder happens. It's right there in the file - if anyone had bothered to dig. But I should thank you, really! You've done a great job of confirming one of the very things I've spent the day's proceedings trying to prove - You admit you were there at the theater that night, and you admit you knew Jebediah Goldbrew! Multiple witnesses were present for that event, and of those witnesses, none reported an argument between you and Mister Goldbrew, certainly not you accusing him of wrongdoing!

Why do your associates end up dead so frequently, Mister Thistleweave? Is it because you're just bad luck? We had the experience of speaking to some of your former employees recently, Mister Thistleweave, and we got the impression they were rather afraid of you. I wonder why that would be...?"

Marisa thinks for a moment, an exaggerated expression of thought on her face. Suddenly, she brightens. "I know? Why don't we ask them? Your honor, I'd like to bring Viti and Ziti Quickhand to testify before the court. I will need a moment to prepare the witnesses, of course."

Vanessa

"I... excuse me, your honor?"
Nessa stares at the dwarf, slightly shocked. Or appalled.
"Do you really mean to say that we, private citizens and visitors, are expected to gather and present a full suite of evidence of Thistleweave's activities? While still remaining within the laws ourselves, without the ability to obtain warrants and engage in fact-finding as fully qualified and empowered detectives? That, in order to lodge an objection in a hearing of business, we are held to the same standards as true prosecutors, that we must prove each claim beyond a shadow of a doubt?"

She glances at Thistleweave, then back at the judge, actually and honestly shocked.
"If I were an actual detective, I would require several years of detailed and careful investigation into this man's business, using numerous informants and techniques, to prove beyond a reasonable doubt even one of the claims here regarding Sir Thistleweave's activities. Most likely, I would be unable to prove any of them, and instead would likely have to rely on a subtle and thin discrepancy regarding his tax reportings to land any conviction at all. Unless the standard of judgment for criminal activities in these courts are sorely lacking, I cannot see how you could possibly hold civil objections to a business transfer by regular citizens and bystanders, for a matter that has been decided on in less than a matter of months, to the same standard as that which would take an empowered professional detective years to achieve."

She shrugs, looking defeated.
"Of course, I should not be lecturing a Dwarven judge regarding his own laws. I, at least, did not expect to be proving Thistleweave's activities to the point where an arrest would be warranted today, and I've been relying mainly on my knowledge of Draunti law, for what I hope are understandable, if not truly excusable, reasons. If I've been mistaken, I beg the court's forgiveness for my misuse of its time."
She glances at Marisa, shrugs again, and faces the judge while the witnesses are 'prepared.'
She still hasn't directly faced or addressed Thistleweave beyond the one glance.

Lefty:

"He's got us bang to rights there, yerroner. Three months ago I thought a barrister was somebody who mixed up fancy coffee drinks, and now here I am acting as one. But if I can cite precedent, we had only flimsy, circumstantial evidence that Nicolas Carbon was harboring a mindflayer in his basement. Most of what got his manor burned down and the earth salted, figuratively speaking, was eyewitness testimony by Society operatives like us. A man's life and entire estate got destroyed because we said so, and those tanks rolled out about fifteen minutes after we checked in. So why is it our testimony doesn't carry any weight, just to delay judgment, now? Why are we arguing harder that a man doesn't get a promotion than we ever had to to have a man utterly destroyed?"

"I mean, if this is all just politics and what we said before didn't make any difference either, knowin' that'd help me sleep better at night, that I was just some common patsy doin' wetwork so some nob with an agenda wouldn't get his hands dirty, business as usual, same ol' stuff as always." Here Lefty slips back into his typical brogue as he describes his usual worldview.

Duskborn Manor: Helena takes the full brunt of the bone-swarm but laughs it off as her skin knits itself back together at a slightly slower pace than the bones tear across it. She clutches her biceps and feigns a shiver, moaning in a sultry manner. "A rough start, is it? I like it..." When Tinsy steps up and unleashes the grease she takes a step an inch up into the air and neatly evades, enchanting herself with a spell of Flight. "No no, little one, that is a bit messy for my tastes."

She raises both hands and enchants a bit of power and the Ashen Orb fluctuates before a loud crash announces the arrival of an old "friend", the now grotesquely super-sized Leftovers bounding into the room like an excited dog and dropping his treats at his Mistress' feet.

"M-MOTHER! LOOK! I-I'M STILL ALIVE! BROTHERS... SISTERS... THEY FAIL!" Whereas the gangly ghoul started as a pile of mistaken bits that are too long and nearly broken he now bulges with fresh muscle and has taken on a beastly form and predator's stride... his body pulses with exciting new blood and slick black ooze drips down him to give a slick hide... and his face seems to be framed with fresh intelligence, his sunken eyes taking in the environment around him instead of staring dead ahead! He watches Helena hesitantly, waiting for... her approval.

Helena looks to her creation with a frown at first, then claps excitedly. "You've done so well, my darling! I think... yes, I think you're fit to take on your siblings duties! Would you like that?" Here sinister face has been replaced by the tone of a noblewoman doting upon a companion dog... Leftovers excitedly pumps himself up and down and nods!

Looking back to you three with sinister glee, Helena immediately engages in a supernatural preparation for an advanced spell, her shadow rising up off the ground and doubling in size to loom over her and add it's own channeling motions to the disastrous ball of static gray she is building in both hands.

"Your friends don't look so good, Hecate... maybe I'll make the little one into my new witty assistant... and bulk up your boy-toy, I don't much fancy the twinkish type... lo-hohohohohoho..."

Things don't look good! And Leftovers didn't even trip on the grease!

Randall looks to you both with pain and desperation on his face. "I can't do much but if you n-need a distraction..."

Courtroom: The Judge bangs his gavel once and simply cuts Thadius off. "This matter is under strict Dwarven jurisdiction." He takes in Thad's words for a second, then shakes his head curtly. "Mister Thistleweave is not a present danger to public safety. I must deny your appeal."

Hector elbows Thad and whispers to him! "Lad, I think you're barking up the right tree... law says we can't look into a man's soul without probable cause... somethin' tells me Barney showed up when your gal pal pressed that bit about the blood!"

The court seems to have taken a foul turn towards Thistleweave but is now quiet. His selling out Goldbrew seems to have struck a nerve...

The Judge bangs his gavel twice and gives Vanessa and Lefty a stern look. "Speak of the matter at hand, the appointment of Barnabus Thistleweave to Head of the Sensationalist Society, or be removed for contempt of court. This is your only warning." It seems trying to pick hairs over Civil vs Criminal, Burden of Evidence or Fairness won't get you far. A scathing letter to the editor about Dwarven politics might soothe your nerves later but for now your only chance seems to be to trip Barnabus up right here and right now.

As Ziti and Viti are led out Marissa can feel a very potent bit of heat about her face...

Barnabus has taken the time to glare at her like a dog eying up a very smart-lipped cat. He composes himself and is back to his winning shark's smile as the Halfling Siblings take the stand.

Ziti immediately snorts, inhales deeply and spits across the court at Marisa, tagging her in the face. Viti tries very hard to cover his chuckle.

Ziti: "I AIN'T TELLIN' YA NOTHIN', YA SECOND-HAND HAND-MADE HAND-BAG HAND-BITCH!"

Viti coughs and nods solemnly. "Although we are willing to hear you out... we're pleading Muradin's Fifth Civil Oath." Common Knowledge that this is simply the right to not endanger yourself in court via testimony against yourself. Or the Right to Remain Silent. Adapted from the religious tenet that self-harm/suicide tends to always lead to the Nine Hells.

Thadius

Thadius leans in to hear Uncle Hector's words, then nods.

"Your honor, while it has not been proven that Thistleweave is a present danger to public safety, it has not been proven that he is not a danger. While I know he is innocent until proven otherwise, my testimony casts suspicion that he is involved with blood magic, or trafficking with evil outsiders. Both are instances that are highly likely to involve people being sacrificed or harmed. Any individual who would do so would of course be unfit for this position, and should stand trial for such crimes."

He pauses for a moment and points towards Marisa.

"As my colleague pointed out, residue from the blood creatures leftover from the theater could be searched thaumaturgical links to the the magic user responsible. And if such a person could be found and shown to be either Thistleweave, or someone in his employ, it would show him unfit to take this appointment. While I realize this may take some time I request it to prove whether or not Thistleweave is a danger to public safety, as a member of the legally recognized institution Hunters of the Night, under Dwarven Code Book 230, Section 5..."

Hector practically shouts out "Subection 32!"

"..Subection 32, Paragraph 8."

Marisa

Marisa waits for the commotion to die down for a moment and collect herself before dealing with the indignity of being spit on. She composes herself like a champ.

Marisa wipes the spit off her face and slides over to the stand, looking at Ziti with concern. Quiet enough for the rest of the court to not hear: "Gods, Ziti, I'd heard you were strung out but I wasn't expecting to see you like this. You've either been up on the dust or coming down off the dust for a really long time, and I can't imagine what getting cut off right now has to feel like, but I need you to understand that I'm not the one who put you in that cell and I'm not the one who got you hooked on that garbage. I can help you. I'm on your side."

Clearing her throat, she speaks up so the rest of the court can hear. "Pleading the fifth oath? You know, Viti, at first I thought I might object to the notion. There is no question to your participation in our recent train bombing incident - there's so many witnesses and pieces of physical evidence that if you were to confess to the crime on the spot it wouldn't make any difference in whether or not you would be convicted. So that can't possibly be your reasoning for pleading the fifth, can it?"

She begins to pace, arms folded across her chest. "So I started to think - what other reason could this man have to be concerned for self incrimination? Oh, of course! The best reason to plead the fifth. Fear. Not of legal consequences, your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the court - fear of what might happen to him when he steps down from this witness chair and out onto the streets of the lower city - or in a dark cell somewhere after the fact. I've been in your position before, Viti - I can empathize. But the safety you gain from staying quiet is an illusion. The kind of person who puts that sort of fear in you - they're not going to give you a free pass because you were good when it was your time in court. If they want you silent now, they're going to want you silent later, and when the heat's died down they're going to silence you for good. Unless you help us stop that from happening."

Court: Phous pointedly ignores Vanessa, paying attention to the testimony of the two below.

Ziti throws up her hands and nearly smacks herself in the face with the chains hanging between them and launches into a screaming fit! "OH OOHH LAH DEE DAH, THE STUPID SNAKE WITH SOMETHING TO GAIN FROM ME CAN HELP ME RIGHT NOW! I COULD JUST DIE HAPPY RIGHT loving NOW! How stupid do you think I am and don't you loving dare say as dumb as you!!! Is this your big plan you fake-titted scale-tail!? loving cut a deal like you've got anything to begin with?! "HEY HERE'S AN IDEA, HOW ABOUT YOU BITCH ABOUT CRIME WHEN WE'RE ASKING WHY ONE OF GEAREG'S OLDEST BIKERS AND SHITTIEST TECH'S WAS ALLOWED TO JOIN THE GOOD GUYS AFTER TEN YEARS OF DOING WHATEVER THE HELL SHE WANTED? HELL ISN'T YOUR FATASS RETARD SISTER WANTED RIGHT NOW? GODS KNOW WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING, HUH!"

Is there an off switch? Ziti seems fit to drown the court out in her ranting until the end of time. Though... quiet until now, her brother reaches over and literally pinches her lips shut with one hand. "... I'll testify. To my role in the bombing of the train line. To Barnabus Thistleweave's involvement with the Boombeards and his grudge against the city and the Society."

The Judge bangs his gavel repeatedly as the crowd explodes in a frenzy of shock and disbelief. The entire time Barnabus is watching your crew with a restrained smile... a vein in his forehead twitching. As things finally begin to quiet down he raises his hand and doesn't wait to cut in.

Barnabus: "Bravo. A paid stoolie with known ties to this criminal Naga, volunteering "priviledged"" He pauses for the air quotes! "Information about my activities without any evidence again... the usual from the Society, is it not?"

Thistleweave holds his hands out to either side and chuckles. "Your Honor, I move that this testimony be stricken from the record. Do you really think plea bargains should be struck in the middle of court proceedings? And with such deranged, untrustworthy individuals..." Ziti twitches, Viti has a death glare for the man.

Viti crosses his arms. Ziti is back to glaring at the side of his head but seems to have some restraint when it comes to not choking him with the chains around her wrists. Viti: "Ser Thistleweave is too practiced in the arts of conspiracy to have permitted us any orders that are written down or any messages that bare his signature. However, I keep my own time-tables that should provide some illustration into things. I uh, guess it'd be something to look up with a warrant or whatever... but I'm willing to play ball." He gives Marisa a little nod.

Barnabus shakes his head slowly. "Your Honor, truly? Let us end this charade. If they had any true evidence, they might have shown it by now..."

The Judge is considering things but remains open to further arguments... you're not sure how much longer that may be though... and things so far have shown a nasty tendency to go Thistleweave's way if you leave them hanging!

Vanessa

Nessa throws her hand up in disgust.
"What do you actually want? A handful of private citizens, acting within the confines of the law, unable to secure a warrant or detain anyone for questioning, have been able to produce a broad and pervasive range of testimony indicating malfeasance over a scant few weeks. This should be incredibly alarming. The entire situation regarding Goldbrew, even if it is only as Thistleweave has said, should be more than enough to interrupt the transfer of title."
Her lip quirks into a sneer.
"And what 'true evidence' would actually be satisfactory, that we could produce? Signatures can be forged, as can 'documents,' and then that leaves... what? What could actually 'prove' these claims? How public and obvious a gaffe must he have committed before he can be called to task on it? From what I've seen, anything short of murder in broad daylight with dozens of witnesses would be on unsettled ground.
"And, besides, what does he mean, should a plea bargain be struck in the middle of court proceedings? We are not prosecutors. We don't have the authority to offer any such bargain ourselves. I was a vogt, a sheriff, for over twenty years, I've tried and passed judgment over hundreds of criminals and prosecuted a marquis in the Draunti Halls of Justice, but here and now I am a private citizen. If I was a detective here, and had the time I'd wanted to develop a case on my terms, this would be going very, very differently."

She pauses for effect, then shrugs.
"If I were the detective, I would have discussed this with Viti ahead of time, convinced him we can protect him, offered him a bargain regarding the train incident. I've been able to do nothing of the sort, and yet here he still is, offering testimony. He is depending purely on the mercy of the court, on the idea that his testimony will be compelling and useful. Surely the court can, in return, at least consider his testimony?"

Court: Ziti picks at her nose with her pinky and looks away, shrugging. "Nah." Viti looks to you all pleadingly as your strong strike on the offense seems to... fall apart entirely. Lefty has a fair point but Ziti isn't cooperating and the Judge is directing a pair of bailiffs over to escort Vanessa out of the room.

Holding his hands up in a feigned shrug, Barnabus chuckles. Then he goes in for a slow clapping. "Ah, bravo, detectives. If I'd know you were more interested in berating the authority of the court perhaps I could've given you tickets to some more subversive Dwarven theater... though I take it the tactless Miss Staere would prefer crude comedies." He chuckles loudly, the Judge breaking through the noise and the building dissatisfaction of the court with his gavel.

Judge: "I believe I have heard enough, particularly in light of your continued need to berate my court. In the matter of Geareg's appointment of Barnabus Thistleweave to head the Sensationalist society... judgement will be deferred until a thorough investigation has been made of his ties to Jebediah Goldbrew and any possible involvement in incidents that have been brought to light. Warrants shall be issued to assure that Draunt's investigation into matters at hand are shared with our own. I thank you for your efforts to see Justice served and so it shall be." Bang, bang. The Judge stands.

The heated glare Phous is giving your group could ruin the profit margins of a candlemaker's shop. Simon joins Thistleweave at his stand and the two shake hands, Barnabus wearing an unbearably smug grin. Additional bailiffs join the first two to keep an eye on your group and the crowd begins to murmur and rise.

Once per turn, you can Tribute 1 WATER monster you control (except this card) to Special Summon 1 WATER monster from your hand. The monster Special Summoned by this effect is destroyed if "Raging Eria" is removed from your side of the field.
Vanessa

Nessa shrugs. She doesn't seem particularly ruffled.
"I need to speak with him regardless. He is going to lose control of the society either way, and I have a responsibility to Miss Carbon now."

Lefty

"Mmmmmmmmmm... eh," Lefty says as he considers the prospect. "For the last coupla days I been thinkin' about that. How much different would the last coupla weeks gone if our briefing had been 'What what, the next demon's in some mob boss named Thistleweave, head down to tha City Below an' punch it outta him before he takes over the Society' insteada the half-assed briefing we got? There may be somethin' to the accusations of incompetence, regardless of anybody ignorin' my argument that we only got incompetence an' outright criminal to choose between."

"You guys can do whatever. I'm gonna follow Thistleweave an' see what I can find out. Bugger all this for a game of soldiers, I'm gonna go try to do some actual spy work."

...I'm sorry. I can't seem to remember any of the rest.
Tinsy

Tinsy winces and grabs her head, scurrying backwards away from Strength. "I'll never serve you! Absolutely not!" She forms a small, invisible ball of heat between her hands and throws it, igniting most of the room!

Move: 5-foot step to H-1
Standard: Fireball centered at C-1ish, should hit all enemies, most of the room and none of us

Nessa waves Lefty off, smiling pleasantly.
"Good luck, do hope you find something."

Necromancy Spells have a +2 on DC due to focus.

"Argh, go away, you!" Hecate mumbles while trying to slap Leftovers, draining some of his energy with her magical essence! Meanwhile, her bone swarm continues to batter Helena, and Randall sends out a cone of psionic power at both the decaying zombie and Helena, hopefully stunning them both!

Vampiric Touch at Leftovers! Rolled Touch Attack: 1d20+5 22 and dealt Vampiric Touch: 5d6 14 damage, with the same as THP going back to Hecate.

Bone Swarm ongoing: 3d6 6 and Helena still needs con checks.

Randall uses Psionic Blast. It's a 30 ft cone that hits Leftovers and the Ashen witch (Will save)?

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?
Court:

-Phous uses the Rite of Accusation to corner Barnabus
-Barnabus freaks out and summons the devil possessing him, Svifflebyss, the Aspect of Envy
-A boss fight with Phous backing you guys up. He's not strong enough to solo Sviffle so he does decent DPS and gives you guys a +Crit Range and Crit Damage aura.
-Svifflebyss is a giant bearded devil with his arms and legs chained to his torso, limiting his movements. He wields a giant glaive and tends to injure himself to bleed and summon increasingly terrible waves of bloody elementals
-Barnabus is an Arcane Trickster Rogue type, natch
-You kill him I guess Marisa or Vanessa would get the Envy Cursed Item
-World has undeniable proof of the existence of devils, end first campaign at "halfway point"

Leftover bits:

-I guess I had something in mind where Illessa was doing some espionage/counter-espionage against Dwarven government that Barnabus interferes with putting her on the radar at all. I bungled that and he and Draunt wanted her for that tech schematic I mentioned in Blood and Empire.
-Goldbrew was the original holder of Envy but naturally Envy wanted better, hence the muck-up at the brewery.
-I originally planned for even more scenes and fights then what happened because I thought I could do things more smoothly than I did. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
-Yes I wanted to have Lefty box Oreom.
-I guess if you had some sane sensible and mundane future in mind for your character that happens. Keeps serving the society, severs and wanders off to retire/serve somebody else, etc.
-Also if you guys didn't talk your way past Simon there would've been a Bad Ending where Barnabus won and I guess your futures would involve whether or not you go into hiding

Manor:

-Through some improbable ray of hope Hecate fights back and Helena infuses Leftovers with the essence of the devil possessing her, transforming him into a handsome fiendish zombie named Lust. Since Lust is a couples possession there isn't just one big devil hiding behind Helena. She's also a bit more invested in actually serving evil powers so this suits her.
-Hecate triumphs, maybe Randall or Tinsy dies
-Hecate gets chance to become the new possessed of Lust
-Maybe to raise her goofy friends if they died as new servants
-Also option to raise Helena's old servants as her own
-Which is cool because cliffhanger ending as the Draunt regiment arrives to raze the manor and start setting fires.

Sorry you all had to endure this awful game I have a part 2 in mind but that would involve subjecting people to one of my games again.
