The NCR is hilariously impotent, given that the player character is literally the only thing standing between them and utter destruction at the hands of the Legion. NPCs essentially say as much in game: "If they get this far, there's no stopping them." Well, you aren't going to stop them from reaching that point, so I guess it's up to me, huh? In NV, it's characterized by lawless cattle barons, forced conscription, the use of mercenaries to harass peaceful settlements, attempts to assassinate leaders of neighboring states (not that House has any democratic legitimacy, but if House has zero legitimacy in New Vegas, the NCR has negative legitimacy, simply because they've done strictly less for the area than he has), and...oh, right, mad scientists who are apparently put in positions of authority. And I'm leaving a bunch of stuff out! The NCR is, essentially, the shittest bourgeois republic imaginable, with the added bonus that it's incapable of defending itself from a force of tribals armed with javelins.

You're being pretty selective with evidence there. The response to the Veteran Rangers, from both sides, is "Oh, gently caress. The NCR's bringing Rangers in. Whelp, Caesar's hosed."

The NCR was protecting the region before House did jack/poo poo. I've pointed out the timeline before, but House only did anything for Vegas once the NCR was about to move in. Meanwhile, the NCR agreed to defend the area against the Legion before House did anything but play with his fuckbots, and before they knew anyone around had anything worth stealing.

Yes. The NCR has some major jackasses. The mercenaries, Moore, decent length list after if you want to keep going. But they're the only faction with reasonable people anywhere with influence. Hsu and Crocker are more-or-less decent guys who want what's best for everyone, NCR and non. And calling the NCR on mad scientists is a laugh considering the setting. If you're a scientist, you're at least a little mad. Nature of the beast.

The NCR is a nicer version of the Westward expansion era USA. They have some flaws, major ones, but compared to the other options on the field, they have a drat halo.

I like how you call out someone being selective and then be selective yourself. House was busy recovering his freaking life support for most of the 200 years he was out of action. Also NCR agreed to defend the mojave because they want power from the dam. They could care less about the people there. What the soldiers say about the whole thing matters very little, they arent the people making the calls.

As far as I can see on the timeline, he spent 61 years in coma, waking up in 2138, after which he presumably started doing repairs and doing important stuff internally in the Lucky 38 or something. Then, in 2274, 136 years later, he observes NCR scouts reaching Hoover Dam. At this point, he recruits the Three Families, and by the time the NCR proper reaches Nevada, the same year, they discover a city of lights, deep in the desert.
A treaty is signed the same year.

Seven years later, a courier gets shot in the head near a small Nevada town.

Poor Wyand :(

So no, it doesn't seem like he did much for the region until the NCR started poking around. As far as I can recall, he took this as a sign that civilization had returned to the Wastes, as the scouts had industrially made uniforms.

It makes sense though, no point in rebuilding a gambling-based economy when there's no society around to support it.

But on the other hand, a counterargument could be made for the fact that House could have helped create a society that could support a gambling-based economy, but he didn't.

As decades passed, what had been the American southwest united beneath the flag of the New California Republic, dedicated to old-world values of democracy and the rule of law. As the Republic grew, so did its needs. Scouts spread east, seeking territory and wealth, in the dry and merciless expanse of the Mojave Desert. They returned only with reports of dusty ruins, radioactive sandstorms, and the poisoned, rubble-choked sludge of the Colorado River.

The Legion's non-existence would probably have more to do with butterfly effects leading to Caesar never being born/not having the same experiences than with the state of the land in the Mojave; Arizona would still be the same parade of horrors. But those same butterfly effects might similarly lead to the NCR not existing.

The origin of the NCR is thus: in FO2 you travel back in time and break a water chip in V13, necessitating you leaving the vault in FO to find a replacement water chip, in the process of finding said water chip you rescue Tandi from raiders and thus put her on the path to turn Shady Sands into the NCR.

Let's talk about our favorite gun.

On my original playthrough I clung to the All-American for my life, that gun was great, but also kinda boring, so in my later playthroughs I ended up gravitating more towards old-fashioned rifles, like the Hunting Rifle and the Brush Gun. Which are still pretty boring guns, I admit.

I have to say that I'm not that fond of bigger guns, like the minigun and the flamethrower, they feel really cumbersome.

God I'm boring at guns.

I've done one-gun games. I used a revolver one game (I did "cheat" a little and upgraded from a .357 to a .44) and a hunting shotgun the other. With the right perks, shotguns and custom crafted ammo are incredibly effective. so I'd suggest those.

you could also use a cowboy repeater/trail carbine.

Alternately use Signature Weapons and pick whatever you want.

And if that failed you could knock their head through their rear end in a top hat then pin them to a house with a javelin.

Speaking of Javelins, the throwing animation is tres cool, but really inaccurate. I'd say about 65% of the time I'll have a bead on some shitter, launch the javelin, only to have him sidestep it like some invisible hand scooted him to the side Just In Time.

Favorite guns, huh.

Well, I remember the first time I played this, I stuck to rifles for a while to try and pick off as many people from afar as possible before moving in or getting caught, so it kind of went varmint rifle -> cowboy repeater -> hunting rifle. I liked the varmint rifle a lot because you could buy the suppressor for it, but it didn't really pack enough firepower. It wasn't until way way into the game that I found the Ratslayer, and that was pretty much my go-to from then on.

After that I started going with a slightly more direct approach to combat, so I found the hunting shotgun pretty amusing, especially since with the choke and slug rounds you can practically snipe with it.

Energy weapons are also a lot of fun. I don't normally like automatic weapons in this game, but the Laser RCW is surprisingly satisfying.

Once, after I started using the signature weapon mod, I decided to go with the laser rifle, and since the signature weapon mod includes unique variants along with the regular weapon, I would keep a normal laser rifle, modded with a scope, as well as the AER14 on me. So basically I would snipe with the normal rifle, and for closer range combat I would pull out the AER14 like a shotgun.

Honestly there are a lot of great weapons in the game and I can't really decide on one. So there's my life story instead.

It's been a couple years since I did that, so this is just spitballing, but Vigilant Recycler, Plasma Spaz, Chemist, and Laser Commander almost certainly figured into it. Plus getting Set Lasers For Fun. Can't remember whether I had Explosives in the mix or not.

Best Guns weapon is COS Sniper Rifle with JSP. For some reason it's almost totally silent, despite firing .308. Sneak crit headshot is hundreds of damage and some -DT, and .308 is plentiful (plus you can get an unlimited supply from the Sierra Madre vending machine). Best Energy Weapons weapon has to be a tie between Pew Pew (insane single shot sneak crit headshot damage) and Holorifle (possibly most solid all-around weapon in game). Ranger Sequoia has very solid damage for a pistol and .45-07 SWC is one of (if not the) best ammo in game, but fires painfully slow.

Melee weapons are really situational for me. I always have either Blood-Nap or Chance's Knife on me if I don't have another, more specialized, melee weapon. Either is capable of sneak V.A.T.S one-shot kills on most enemies. Protonic Inversal Axe is highest damage sneak V.A.T.S weapon I think, plus bonus against robots/power armor. Nephi's Driver has a guaranteed knockdown on special attack which renders humanoid enemies totally helpless once you land one. Chainsaw has a really wonky stunlock type effect (sometimes), ignores DR/DT, attacks super fast, and might be the easiest melee weapon to consistently make headshots with. Knock-Knock has really good damage and a useful special attack (especially if you don't have Nephi's Driver or Super Slam yet). Thermic Lance/Gehenna are useful for Pyromaniac builds I guess.
