I've watched it twice. The rally footage alone is worth it.

Watching it just made me realize that I have been slacking by not making it out to dirtfish yet. It's kinda expensive($750 for a half day, $1,300 for 1 day, $2,700 for 2 day, $3,600 for a 3 day) but from everything I have heard it is well worth the money.

For the derail, you shouldn't hit your kids, but you should put the fear of god in them. There is a big difference between beating your kids and letting them do what ever they want, you have to find the middle ground.

That's why it's great to have stepkids. They don't know that you're not really gonna murder them.

I wish there was a rally school nearby, but Bama's all about NASCAR.

There is no simple answer. Ultimately, there should be no unions because each person should work for their own wage (some higher, some lower, depending on capability/drive/etc.). However, that is in an ideal society lacking exploitation. I believe that in the mid-'90s we were close enough to that ideal that there was enough opportunity to support yourself without the need of a union's backing.

We have slipped a long way from that place, though, and the rise of unions is something that needs to happen. Simply from a wage disparity viewpoint, it's far too simple to prove exploitation.

Well sure, if you want to get rid of corporations too. But having everyone be self employed seems like a rather utopian idea that's quaint on the level of Thomas Jefferson wishing the United States would be a largely rural agrarian society. The 90s were largely an aberration built on the dotcom bubble, and to be honest, things weren't even that great back then either. Certainly a bit better than they are now, but the downward spiral of the quality of life for working class americans started back in 1968.

I really want to agree with what you said, but I also believe there is a fine line of legislation to union to work place. The balance hasn't been struck yet, hell this is one of those hot button MBA topics that gets talked about by every single class, especially relating to HR and theory. There are a lot of ideas, but the hard part is finding a balance between them all.

I'd like to think that on some level people generally are self starters, it all depends on their motivation. The larger question at hand though is how do you motivate somebody who clearly lacks motivation, intrinsically or extrinsically, and the ability to self start? If anybody can figure out that equation, they'd make money hand over fist.

When did I say anything about "everyone being self employed"?

It's nice that you took the opportunity to spin your "quaint" web, but your reading comprehension is lacking.

That is literally the only way your ideal of everyone working for their own wage, determined by their ability and work ethic, etc etc etc could possibly work in a market economy (along with perfect information available to every actor, which is of course impossible). I suppose it's theoretically possible in a command economy but I didn't really peg you as a Stalinist.

Once you start including hierarchies, which are inevitable once an organization reaches a certain size, and abstract concepts like corporations and unions there are inefficiencies introduced into the economy. Frictions. Then when you include intergenerational accumulation of capital, the hugely complex global economy that we currently inhabit and any pretense of a meritocracy disappears. The price of your labor has a tenuous at best correlation with how much you contribute to the company's bottom line. It has far more to do with how much your employer is willing to pay for that position. This illustrates the concept nicely. The inherent power imbalance created by private ownership of capital means that people will accept a far lower wage than they are "worth", no matter how hard they work, or how smart they are. The exploitation you speak of is inherent and intrinsic to the private ownership of capital. If we, as workers let our foot off their neck for one second, they will take a mile.

You can see this play out in the history of the United States after World War II. Material circumstances created conditions where the United States, with its industrial base left intact was left as the sole hegemon in the West . This economic dominance and the rapid growth that followed led to complacency amongst the left and that's why the United States is more right wing economically than Europe and the developed economies of South East Asia.

Turns out that American dominance of the Western/World economy is more or less a historical aberration. Developed and developing economies are catching up to the United States in terms of worker skill and productivity. This is good for company owners, because this creates downward pressure on wages, but it's not so good for American workers. Without the bulwark of unions to resist that downward pressure, you can see the slow unwinding of worker protections and the social safety net that has happened in the United States since 1968 when racists killed LBJ's Great Society. Globalization and neoliberalism has only hastened this process.

Average worker productivity in the United States has more than doubled since 1970. Wages, adjusted for purchasing power and inflation have remained flat over the same time frame. Where has the balance of this extra money gone? Unless you ascribe every increase in worker productivity to capital improvements, an increasingly larger share of the economic surplus in the United States' economy is being captured by capital. Exploitation is increasing. In the 90s, the rate slowed down a bit, but as soon as the boom times ended, it ramped right back up again.

Yes this is more or less marxism 101, if not in the classical M-L tradition. :dealwithit: I don't agree with much of his predictive work (a truly classless society e.g the dictatorship of the proletariat is impossible in an economy with scarce resources) but analyzing how the economy works through the lens of class has as much merit in the 21st century as it did in the 19th. Empirical evidence bears out the fact that in 1st world economies, the more equal income is, the better off the country or state is in like every metric you can think of. There's less violent crime, lower teen pregnancy, lower rates of mental illnesses like anxiety and depression, higher life expectancies, lower rates of obesity and diseases of affluence (heart disease, type 2 diabetes, various sorts of cancer, strokes, etc). These metrics do not correlate with either raw GDP per capita, or with income within an unequal economy, except at the very top, roughly the top 5% or so. Wealthy people in more unequal economies are worse off and less happy than middle class people in more equal societies, and in some cases, the very bottom of those societies.

You can disagree with me philosophically (in which case I would say, holy poo poo liberals the enlightenment was 400 years ago; crack open a book with ideas that aren't from the 18th century) but the facts are the facts. As long as private ownership of capital is the way that the economy is fundamentally organized (I'm not opposed to market economies per se, just the private ownership of the means of production) unions are necessary for workers to protect themselves from capital. Otherwise we end up with the conditions of the mid to late 19th century, which is the reason why unions came to existence in the first place! It is in a worker's enlightened self interest (not necessarily you personally since I'm hazarding a guess that you are fairly moderately well off from what I remember of your posts) to unionize, to collectively bargain.

Honestly, though, the thought through my head reading that was "Under capitalism, there MUST be unemployment. If there was no unemployment, the system wouldn't work because everyone would be able to demand higher wages."

I broadly agree with Boots, and even orthodox economists agree that full employment is impossible/extremely bad for a capitalist economy.

Of course nothing is perfect, but if power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, distributing power amongst more people would seem to reduce the severity of that corruption. There's other reasons to advocate for a transition away from a free market economy with private ownership, like its pretty terrible record of dealing with negative externalities, it's increasingly unstable operation in the face of rising petrochemical energy costs, climate change, tendency of for the rate of profit to fall and the consequences of a global economy that will eventually stop growing but I think I've bored everyone enough sooooooooooooo

FOUR. HOURS.

loving foam inside the quarter panels. All I needed to do was run one wire for the oil temperature sender, but you know how running wires is: if you're pulling one, you may as well pull six. The part from the dome light opening to the inside of the frunk was pretty quick.

Fun aside! I installed two gauges, a voltmeter and the oil temp gauge, into the area to the right of the speedometer. In that little dash panel thing, there's a "FASTEN SEATBELTS" light/warning/thing that has never worked, but was still hooked up. I unplugged it when I replaced the panel with the gauge panel, and after everything today when I went to listen to some music, my subwoofer wasn't working. I tapped off of a connector under the rear seat for the trigger to turn on the amp, and it's somehow connected to that "FASTEN SEATBELTS" light. I plugged the seatbelt light thing back in to the connector inside the trunk, and the amp works again.

To be fair, I should have checked what that connector under the seat was for. I still have no idea :iiam:
