It also turns out that 'Early Access' or whatever, is a real backwards rear end way to make a game. You get funds to work on the game - but your development priorities are totally messed up due to the constant pressure to appease.

Gamers make for far worse financial backers than publishers on average in my opinion. Publishers won't chargeback because your main character isn't the cis-hating scandinavian transpony post-op they desperately wanted for validation. They're also generally not mentally deficient and socially stunted. Also won't beg you and harass you to put in furry/brony poo poo just to appease their sad and pathetic kink. Of course early access is just one of the many reasons Starbound is floundering about the place steadily becoming less enjoyble. Also gamers are almost always lovely, broken people who find the most pathetically tiny details to obsess and rage about regardless of context or impact. Maybe 0.001% of gamers can form opinions with greater sophistication than an 8-year old. Gamer culture is resposible for some of the most cringe-inducing poo poo I've ever seen. So yeah they're the perfect people to have financial control over your project and allow serious input into gameplay elements from.
