Merry Christmas, you flannel-clad bastard.

http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/11/...egulations.html
Note that this doesn't look like a permanent URL.

quote:

Los Angeles , CA - The MPAA is lobbying congress to push through a new bill that would make unauthorized home theaters illegal. The group feels that all theaters should be sanctioned, whether they be commercial settings or at home.

MPAA head Dan Glickman says this needs to be regulated before things start getting too far out of control, "We didn't act early enough with the online sharing of our copyrighted content. This time we're not making the same mistake. We have a right to know what's showing in a theater."

The bill would require that any hardware manufactured in the future contain technology that tells the MPAA directly of what is being shown and specific details on the audience. The data would be gathered using various motion sensors and biometric technology.

The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29" with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon. Anyone with a home theater would need to pay a $50 registration fee with the MPAA or face fines up to $500,000 per movie shown.

"Just because you buy a DVD to watch at home doesn't give you the right to invite friends over to watch it too. That's a violation of copyright and denies us the revenue that would be generated from DVD sales to your friends," said Glickman. "Ideally we expect each viewer to have their own copy of the DVD, but we realize that isn't always feasible. The registration fee is a fair compromise.

The bill also stipulates that any existing home theaters be retrofitted with the technology or else the owner is responsible for directly informing the MPAA and receiving approval before each viewing.

Isn't this more than a little ridiculous? A $500,000 for showing a movie to a friend, but only if our TV is big and we're sitting comfortably! I hope this bill died a swift death.

Has anyone else noticed recently that a lot of satire articles are getting reposted with the poster not being able to tell that the article is satire?

I'm not sure wether that's a comment on the state of the world or the state of SA posters.

Why don't they just mandate that every TV larger than 29" be an IngSoc-style Viewscreen?

I just finished reading this and was wondering when the RIAA was gonna regulate what volume you can listen to your music at. What, sorry past 7.0 decibel and 5.1 surround is considered "concert sound" can't have that at home need to have it registered. Yea, I know about the volume regulated iPods in Europe just TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

From that logic the net neutrality thing sounds like it's satire too. Or maybe the RIAA suing the family of a dead 92 year old woman for stealing music? There's been some crazy legal poo poo going on lately, I wouldn't put it past them.

Well no, not really, I guess if you don't keep up on current events at all or didn't understand what it was about.

That was something the telecomunications industry had been trying to do for ages.

But honestly: "The bill would require that any hardware manufactured in the future contain technology that tells the MPAA directly of what is being shown and specific details on the audience. The data would be gathered using various motion sensors and biometric technology."

This is... I don't even know how to put it, you really think they'd put in widgets to take biometic data on anyone watching a dvd? They're a bunch of evil bastards, yes, but mostly just send C&Ds and censor swear words needlessly.

Welcome to Canada. Yes it smells funny, you'll get used to it.

This article is about as unbelievable as TV executives stating that using Tivo to skip commercials amounts to stealing. Unfortunately, that's what many of them have already stated.

The line between cynical satire and reality has been blurring for many years. This really could become a reality in the future.

I knew it was fake the second they were talking about using biometric data to monitor the audience.

I do like the idea of the MPAA banning their own personally created industry of Home Theatre (the DVD market).

I look forward to the sequel article where you only buy a license to see a movie from a certain perspective in the theatre and you have to wear blinders to prevent unauthorized perspectives. Oh looks like you can only afford to see the movie looking from the extreme left of the theatre.
