Directed by: Stefan Ruzowitzky Starring: Franka Potente, Benno Fürmann, Anna Loos http://www.pompflonker.demon.co.uk/filem/anatomy.jpg This is an interesting German take on a thoroughly horrible concept. A renowned medical school has just received a fresh intake of students, and the opening scenes play out some of the themes for the rest of the movie. A few of the students upon entering one of the schools labs get a cruel and disgusting trick played upon them by some senior students. Upon finding out the source of this trick, the lead brands them 'unethical'. Treated to some scenes of embalming the still living, it is clear something sinister is going on. A coincidence tips some of the students off that something is rotten, and it ain't the spare corpses, but will what they find be worth risking their lives? This film aims a little higher than its budget and concept allow, and it seems to wallow in a sense of 'hey, isn't that a bit nasty?'. It is also a bit formulaic, but it is competently made. Choose sub over dub where possible, but don't bother hunting unless you're a genre fan as it is nothing truly special. 3. PROS: Unanaesthetised surgical procedures? CONS: Tired, clique concept ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://imdb.com/title/tt0187696/

"Tired" describes this movie best. It goes through all the paces of a normal thriller/horror movie and adds really nothing unique at all, and never manages to scare you. The suprises and twists are somewhat well done, but if you've seen a lot of movies from the genre you'll probably be yawning by the time they come around. It's not absolutely terrible, and the acting is good enough -- I'd suggest it only as a last-minute-can't-find-anything-else rental and little else. The Foreign section in Blockbuster usually offers creative and fresh movies from other countries, but in the case of Anatomy, it's just the same old Hollywood crap -- but spoken in German. 2.5

The film suffers from the European obsession with NeoNazism subplots that tend to go nowhere.
