Sam Fuller is one of those directors that can turn anything into an enjoyable film. His treatment here provides for something really interesting; he downplays the "red scare" aspect of the film, while other movies of the time where honking it up to score points with nervous audiences. This is also one of the most conventional of his films, sticking pretty closely to film noir dogma, so this isn't a bad place to start for people interested in discovering his films. And as you said, the ending is really great.
