Directed by: Edward Zwick Starring: Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman Truly one of the best war movies I've seen, I would put it right up there with Saving Private Ryan. The acting is incredible, although Matthew Broderick doesn't really look as good as he can all the time. The actors actually make the characters mean something, and you really don't want to see them die. The movie sucks you in from the opening battle scene, and while not a nonstop action-packed thriller, stays thoroughly enjoyable. Both of the cons listed are very nitpicky, but I didn't want to put "none." Very enjoyable, entertaining, well written, and accurate enough to watch for history class, this movie is one of my current favorites. RATING: 5 PROS: Well acted, good script, actually makes you care CONS: No real scope with rest of war (nitpicky, I know), Broderick bland at times. Oddly enough, I did watch this last year in my AP US History class. As my teacher put it, "Ferris Bueller Goes To War". I don't know how historically accurate this was, but it does a credible job raising awareness about segregated units during the civil war. 5

This film needs more discussion and more love. In fact, more people should see this movie. It didn't get the box office it deserved. It's as solid a war movie as ever been filmed. The story is simply mesmerizing and the fact that it's true only makes it better. The acting is top notch across the board. Every interaction between the whites and blacks and/or the officers and soldiers makes for very powerful cinema. There are certain scenes that will bring you to tears. The testifying around the campfire of the soldiers. The punishment meted out on a runaway soldier. The reluctant acknowledgment of valor by certain white soldiers towards the blacks. These scenes combined with a chillingly beautiful score by James Horner (Titanic, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind) grab you and never let go. Despite holding true to it's historic and tragic conclusion, you can't help but watch as this ragtag group of ex-slaves not only learn about teamwork and discipline, but they also find the dignity that had been stripped from them by the whites. Please watch this film. You will not regret it. 5

Powerful stuff, although it perhaps feels a bit too much like a network TV movie. Denzel is amazing, as always. Rating: 4
