Directed by: Adam McKay
Starring: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Steve Carrell

http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2004/anchorman/flute.jpg

I haven't seen a movie with such a completely different first and second half like this since Full Metal Jacket. But while Kubrick's Nam tale has a brilliantly chilling first half set in Boot Camp and loses all energy once the war setting kicks in, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy falters with bad pacing during the first part, but starts a full sprint (or some other sports metaphor that sounds better than that) at the end that makes it all worthwhile.

The first half hour or so suffers from a smugness that just didn't work for me. Will Ferrell seems forced to burden all the laughs with little or no support. It's a low key tone that doesn't utilize the cast well, and maybe takes itself more seriously than it should. You meet the news crew, see how the station works, and are introduced to Christina Applegate's character, who becomes a threat to the all-male good old boy's club in the studio.

She's one of the main problems with the film. She's not particularly charming, has very little funny to say or do, save to hit someone in the nuts, and frankly looks a bit tired. She's supposed to be this great knockout that everyone's falling over but can't seem to pull it off. In one scene, she brags about her exquisite breasts and you can't help but shake your head and say, "no...not really." In fact, in many of her close-ups, she's way too tan, and her eyebrows are so fair, that she looks like she's a recovering burn victim. This part called for someone more like Kim Catrall.

http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2004/anchorman/sleeping.jpg

Ferrell plays Burgundy as a pompous goof that doesn't know how stupid he is with a portrayal that brings to mind Ted Knight's brilliant work as Ted Baxter on the old Mary Tyler Moore show. It's definitely a love it or hate it performance, which is a bit hard to take during the slow first 30 minutes of the film. I only got a few chuckles during this period, and was ready to invent a reason to leave the movie early, and then, like some baseball team that is down by 15 runs in the 5th inning, the film starts nailing it by taking an absurd and bizarre slant that has some of the funniest scenes I've watched in a long time.

Fist fights with grizzly bears, dogs getting kicked off bridges, and more crazy poo poo that comes out of nowhere becomes the new norm, and the audience was laughing their asses off. The last 45 minutes was so funny, it was well worth the lackluster start to get there.

In one of the film's shining moments, newscasters from rival stations meet up in an abandoned alleyway and have a five-way gang fight that is brilliant. People are swept away in a net by people on horseback ala Planet of the Apes, arms are ripped off, and one guy's weapon of choice is bat with scissors strapped to it. The random insanity that ensues through the rest of the film is some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a good while.

http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2004/anchorman/anchors.jpg

Steve Carrell from The Daily Show is the true gem in this film as a semi-retarded newscaster with an IQ of 45 that gets amazingly funny lines to say. When insulted with the dig, "It looks like you got your clothes at The Salvation Army", he replies confidently, "Yeah...well it looks like you got your clothes at THE TOILET STORE!" I'm definitely eager to see more of his work in the future.

Comedy legend Fred Willard is a nice touch, as well, as the news director. His understated performance really adds a lot. You've got to respect this guy for a lifelong career of 2nd banana and character acting performances done with such a high quality.

And for you retro-fans, there's plenty of kitschy 70s fashion and decor to laugh at. Though in one scene, a perfectly 80s era Rubik's Cube is one someone's desk, but I'm sure that was more of a joke than a mistake.

If you've liked Ferrell's other films, you're sure to like this one, just hang in there when the going gets tough, and you'll get a great payoff.

And stay tuned during the closing credits, there's some hilarious bloopers including a wonderfully bizarre inclusion of a scene from Smokey and The Bandit that makes little sense, but it funny as hell, nonetheless.

RATING: 3

PROS: the last 45 minutes is incredibly hilarious
CONS: the first 30 of the film is not

Just got back from an advance screen(courtesy of Coupons), and I must say I really enjoyed this movie. Easily the funniest movie I've seen in a theater in a long time.

I'll agree with the original poster in that the beginning was pretty slow, but not the whole first half of the film. And even then, when I tried to think of the jokes that I really didn't find funny at all, I couldn't remember them, because the rest of the movie is hilarious.

Will Ferrell gives a great performance, and the supporting cast is great as well. Christina Applegate is kind of so-so as a co-star, but she really doesn't have all that much screen time for having 2nd billing.

Probably one of the funniest films I've ever seen, easy 5/5

Voted 4.5 for the last half, much like the previous reviewer said.

Let me talk more about the gang fight, the anchor team is trying to find the suit shop and end up in the bad part of town, wandering around some warehouse backlot. Vince Vaughn and his anchor team gang ride up on old timey bicycles and challenge Will Ferrel's lot to a good ole fashion beat down. They all pull out weapons(Ron: A chair leg, Brian: A revolver, Champ: Dual brass knuckles, Brick: A HAND GRENADE LOL THINK THEY ARE GOONS), when suddenly ANOTHER anchorteam shows up ready to beat rear end, with crazy weapons as well such as buzzsaws on a baseball bat and the aforementioned scissors bat. Then another anchor team, then the SPANISH LANGUAGE anchor team! They all get in a huge brawl in which Steve Carrel(Brick) throws a loving TRIDENT into a guys chest, and Luke Wilson gets his arm cut off by Tim Robbins. It was a serious lol moment.

All Hail Saban
Of the blood, and of the Tide
I saw this last night at an advance screening here in Birmingham. This is the funniest movie of the year. You will not see anything funnier in theaters for at least another 12 months. Will Ferrell is not for everyone. He is for me however, and this film made me laugh the most in a theater since Dumb and Dumber.

I honestly do not think this has a slow first half. In fact after the credits are done in the beginning, I had a smile the whole way through. There were parts of that made me physically hurt. As in, "I couldn't breathe because I was laughing so hard." I can't count the number of times I wiped tears off my face.

I gauge a comedy's strengh by how much I can remember of it the next day and if it is still funny or not. This way, most punchlines and quick sight gags lose my attention so I can see if the movie really is funny. Anchorman has the same amount of memorable classic moments as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Now I'm not comparing these two. Those are 2 different types of comedy. I am comparing how many scenes from each movie are just fantastic. Doing that, they are on par with each other.

I rated this a 5, simply because it is one of the best comedies ever put to celluloid.

And if you don't find Pleasure Land to be one of the funniest sidesteps in the movie, I just pity you.

Now that is the finest piece of chilean sea bass I have ever smelled
Pleasure Land was hilarious indeed. "Do me on it!!"

I enjoyed the movie but thought the cast was a little weak, including Applegate. She was supposed to be this smart sophisticated reporter but it's hard to take her seriously, both in how she looks and with her previous performances in Married With Children and Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. Yeah. It's been awhile since I've typed that.

That said, the movie was histerical. The best part was a surprise cameo by Jack Black in which Burgandy throws a burrito out the window, hits Black's motorcycle, and causes an accident. Burgandy pulls over only to witness an enraged Black punt his small dog off a bridge and the payphone scene where Burgandy tries to explain it. Despite being a one-man show, it was great stuff and I'll get the DVD once it's out probably.

Edit: Voted 4

On Planet Shining
Somehow, I was at the NYC premiere/special screening at the Museum Of Television and Radio last night.

After digesting the movie, it's a solid 4.5 - definitely one of the better comedies to come out this year, but still could've been better. Some of the portions should have been chopped (the prank phone calls were a waste of time), and two members of the news team weren't really fleshed out too well as characters (you'll figure out which two). By and large, though, it was pretty solid laughter throughout the crowd, all the way through the movie.

(Minor quibble: The pacing of the movie was such that they'd nail a good line, causing everyone to laugh, but then they'd hit another joke right afterwords which I was unable to hear due to the laughter.)

As for Christina Applegate - I guess I had really low expectations for her, so I was mildly surprised. All she really had to do was be firm against Will Farrell, and she did that reasonably well. She's alright, I guess. (As for the exquisite breasts scene - she was sitting close enough to us at the premiere where I could see what she looks like well enough, and "no, not really..." is a massive understatement.) (photographic evidence of point made in spoiler)

Steve Carell literally stole the movie. After seeing them used so many times for dramatic roles (Sling Blade, I Am Sam) or really poor comedy (Gigli), I left the movie having my faith restored that mentally handicapped characters are once again properly being used in cinema.

Mr. Show fans will be happy to know that there are three alums in the movie. Jay Johnston is one of the members of Vince Vaughn's news gang, Paul Tompkins shows up as the MC at the cat fashion show, and there's the surprise Jack Black cameo.

Like Dodgeball, it's screwball comedy, so don't go in with expectations of an acting tour de force. Go with the friends you have who enjoy goofy comedies, and you're pretty much assured to leave laughing.

Oh, and a trivia tidbit:
The big deal about this "special screening" was that Will Farrell came out afterwards in character to be interviewed by Bill Kurtis. The first question Bill asked was about his sex life, and Ron admitted to having eleven homosexual encounters in the early 70's, because there were no women in the newsroom. At the end of the interview, he said he wanted to give Bill an open mouthed kiss. Was an odd extra dimension to the character.

Having just seen it, there are things I want to do to Steve Carrell that my straightness just won't permit. Simply put, he steals and makes this entire film. Without it, the entire thing would have suffered horribly. It'd be like Caddyshack without Bill Murray. Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield are still decently funny, but Murray knocks it out of the loving ballpark. Steve Carrell was that good.

As for the rest of it, it was very enjoyable, and though the beginning was perhaps not as tight as the rest of it, I didn't mind("I want to be on you" is the best pick-up line I've heard in a long while). I am absolutely certain that this movie is going to be afforded the same comedic respect twenty years from now that your Ghostbusters or your Trading Places is today.

Well, in Whoville they say - that his tiny hands grew three sizes that day.

I loved this movie. Almost everyone was funny as hell, the gang fight scene was fantastic, as was the second prank call and what Ron said to get himself fired. However, will all due respect to all the other actors, Steve Carell made this movie in my opinion, Brick was absolutely off the loving wall, I can't imagine anyone else playing Brick nearly as well as Carell did.

EPS if I recall Applegate said that half the scenes put in the movie were ad libed takes. I guess they did one take exactly as the script had and then they did a number of other takes that were ad libed. Some of the ones that didn't make cut were the ones put on during the credits I assume.

don't mind me, I'm just out hunting.

I agree with the original poster on several points.

The first half of the movie crawls. It seems as if the writers were trying to illustrate a story that was not there. Bad lines and no support plagued the first part of the movie. Christina Applegate is hot, but this is not a role for her, and I didn't like her character at moments. She was a flat out bimbo at times, but she was supposed to be a great, smart reporter. She also was not volumptous enough. Bigger tits would have gone a long way for some reason. Will Ferrell acts too aloof during his roles, and for some reason I just don't find him funny.

The second half of the movie is completley different. Random scenes, with hilarious lines and great support from the cast members made it. As everyone is saying, Steve Carrell is amazing, and it seems like the writers just stopped giving a drat about the story line, but just made it funny. Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Tim Robbins, Jack Black all have great cameos, and the dog talking to the bears has to be one of the best moments, second only to the reporter back alley brawl. Vince Vaughn is quickly becoming a comedy favorite of mine. Roles like this, and Dodgeball and the support in Old School are racking up points for him.

pros: Funny second half, funny cameos, great supporting cast
cons: I just don't find Will Ferrell funny, Christina Applegate was a bad pick. First half of the movie was bad

I give the movie a 2.5/5

What in the hell did I just watch?

I love Will Ferrell, so I have no axe to grind in that regard. But I just got back from watching this debacle in a packed theatre and...I'm dumbfounded. This movie transcended bad. Shrouded in a very thin plot, it was nothing more that a staccato string of inane jokes and the sure sign of a lovely movie, a number of cameos.

This stunk of one of those "alum" films where a bunch of actors (and I do use that term loosely here) get together, fill out roster spots and ham it up for the camera. Anyone of these roles could have been played by one of the other actors. And the reason that you saw a "star" of Christina Applegate's stature in this movie is obviously because no other actress with a shred of dignity would have accepted this script.

I laughed out loud one time during this film, and oddly enough, I was the only one. When the announcer is paid off by Ron and he says, "That was Ron Burgundy and Tits McGee!" I guffawed out loud only to be stared at by those who sat in stone silence around me. The highlight of this movie was the Milk-Dud fight that broke out between two bored teenagers at the front of the cinema.

Save your money folks. It'll be at Blockbuster by noon tomorrow. 0.5

I liked every bit of it. Everything. Every little skit or idea was funny or made me smile. I especially liked the way the Channel 4 News Team were like little kids. It's just the way I imagined it'd be from all the press.

I have cemented my opinion with Anchorman that any comedy that includes in it's cast at least two of these guys: Vince Vaughn, an Owen brother or two, Will Ferrel, or Ben Stiller will be laugh until I cry funny. Examples are Old School, Starsky and Hutch, Zoolander, and Dodgeball.

Guess what happens when you get them all in the same movie, even as cameos?

You get comedy across the board, and you get 4.5/5.

Hilarious. What sets Anchorman apart from that shitheap Dodgeball is that there was seemed to be a serious attempt on the part of the writers to think up some unique and rather random gags. In fact, the least funny bits in the movie were the parts when they ganked on some of the cliches, like the "where are they now?" bit at the end. Carrell steals the movie, but everyone has at least one funny line, even that rear end in a top hat from Empty Nest who plays the station boss. Props to Farrell and co. for making me laugh in this mirthless loving year of comedy.

GBS POSTER 2000
Nov 25, 2003
I just finished watching it, and I was pleased.

Overall the movie had some pacing issues. A lot of the first 30 minutes or so are used to set up the plot and the characters. However unlike most comedy movies of this ilk the plot and the characters weren't stock footage from every wacky comedy ever made, so I really didn't mind the rather tepid introduction. The plot is enjoyable, even beyond the context of the humor in the movie. It's over the top, and ridiculous, but it's also a pretty interesting premise. The characters, too, are absurdly funny, but they're still likable. All of the male anchors are chauvanistic and comicly stupid, but the way that they're acted and written makes them really likable.

Of course where anchorman really shines is its irreverent sense of humor. There's a weird sort of running logic behind each of the scenes. Whereas a lot of lesser comedy movies will have a 'wacky' scene that's instantly forgotten once it's over, Anchorman has a continuity to it -- even the most absurd jokes (like the anchorman throw-down, or the bear fight) are shown with the same sort of mock seriousness. There are some incredibly creative scenes in the movie that come out of absolutely no-where, and are a pleasent change from the usual formulaic laughs in summer comedy. This kind of mock-serious attitude makes the movie really stand out from most of the other comedies I've seen recently.

I was laughing pretty consistently through-out the movie, but where it really shines is in the last 40 minutes or so of its climax and conclusion. Everything comes together perfectly, and there are some gut busting moments. Corell on the bear is probably the funniest line in recent memory

One of the things that I was worried about when seeing the advertising blitz on TV and in trailers was that the movie would be like an adam sandler flick, where things are supposed to be funny just because they're crazy -- however Anchorman has real wit to back up its over the top antics; it doesn't ever treat its audience like an idiot. Even Corell's character, who seemed like a typical 'says something stupid with every line' stereotype, was hillarious; really stealing the movie from Farell in some scenes.

I went into the theatre expecting a few cheap laughs, and left really pleased with a solid comedy movie. Highly recommended, 5.0.
