In all honesty, this is one of the worst reviews I've ever read. No one should be basing their opinion off this person's review. At all. The only aspects of the review that dealt with the movie were spoilers.

Just watched this, it was alright. Good acting. Story has been done before. But still fun to see. Special effects and action sequences were really really well done. Sonny is actually a really cool character.

Saw it at a midnight showing. I thought it sucked. Badly. Plot holes, lovely acting, horrible diologue and continuity errors everywhere.

Now, i'm a guy who liked Riddick, so i give every movie its fair chance.

Even the action scenes in this were lovely. Especially that one scene towards the end where the director seemed to get a hard on for the spinning camera. God that pissed me off. Also- Jumping motorcycle dual pistol head-shotting robot action during that mob clash.

The best worst part was the mob led by that 15 year old kid, who seemed to be able to organize a lynch mob, 1000 strong, within half an hour. I almost expected the humans to start chanting "sharks" while the robots screamed "jets". Then the 15 year old would tie himself to the lead robot and they would fight to the death with future-knvies

Then you have your standard "doctor with no knowledge of shooting, becomes as accurate as a special forces commando within 5 minutes" and enough Wil Smith 1 liners to make your ears bleed.

Also- The female doctor never got naked. What the gently caress. We see will smith's rear end, yet there is no reciprocation for the male population.

Guns n' Roses n' Deus Ex Machina

I went into I, Robot with no expectations and I liked it.

No, it had no direct relation to any of Asimov's short stories outside of the occasional, generally superficial, reference such as the scene in which Sonny, a "unique" robot given full free will, hides from authorities in a room with 1000 other identical robots. However, It had a much smarter plot than expected from a summer popcorn flick, and maintains one link to Asimov's work in that the conflict arises when robots follow the three laws to the letter, only with unforeseen results. The movie does a surprisingly good job tying up loose ends. Detective Spooner's (Will Smith's) technophobia is explained in a reasonable, believable manner (He and a young girl were trapped in a submerged vehicle. A robot, which could only save one of them, chose Spooner despite his insistence the girl be saved. Spooner feels guilty that he was allowed to survive, and blames it on the robot). There's even a good explanation for why the manufacturers installed all those evil, red lights in their robots.

I thought the action scenes were excellent. While they are blatantly reminiscent of the Matrix trilogy, they're frankly done better (and have less Keanu Reeves in them) then they were in the Matrix trilogy. The CG gets a little too obvious at times, but hey: it is a movie about hordes of robots and hovercars and whatnot.

That said, it has it's share of schlock and the occasional unexplained, overly convenient twist. For instance, the new line of robots (the ones that turn evil) are capable of ripping all the older-model robots to shreds. Other than making the movie possible, there's no explanation as to why this newest line would have been given increased super-strength. As far as most sci-fi movies go, however, I-Robot really isn't that bad an offender in this regard.

And yes, the movie has a few too many Will Smith one-liners, but, in my opinion, they actually suit his character to a degree.

So, in short, if you go in with no expectations, you will be very, very pleasantly surprised. I have a felling that, had they kept the script's original name rather than slapping on the Asimov license, there would be a lot more praise for this movie on the forums

In the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.

Didn't much care for the beginning, or the subtle neo-luddite message tucked away in there, but I thought the ending was amazing. Excellent camera work, and the dialogue really picked up near the end.

It was rather nice for an action flick. No rapid fire cameras, and I really liked those spinning camera moments Mr. Laranzu . The robots were vividly realistic, and their movement made for some real kickass action scenes.

Disliked some of the plot. Loved the action. Some good humour sprinkled throughout as well. If you tend to enjoy summer blockbusters, you'll definitely like this.

Awesome movie. If you go with an open mind, expecting a decent summer action movie, you should be very pleased with this movie. On the other hand, if you are going to see it just to call it a travesty and a disgrace to Asimov's work, I'm sure you will have no trouble collecting your evidence.

If you like action/sci-fi movies and have any interest in seeing this, go see it now. 5/5

Would have been a shame to blow it up.

My WFU asked me if I wanted to go see this movie because she thought I'd like to see a "man movie" When I told her that this movie did not have anything at all to do with the silly stories that I read, and that Asimov was spinning in his grave at about 5000 RPM, she asked me if I could "get over it, and enjoy it as a movie with the same name as a silly old book" You know what, she was right, sure there are some echos of some of Asimov's work in this movie, but is this a action flick, and I liked it.

I mean who wouldn't like a movie with Ninja Robots, shooting, kung-fu, cyborg action, rear end, rear end and rear end. All this movie needed was to have pirates in it and I would have given it a 5!

Saw the movie, thought it was pretty good. If you don't take it as a screen adaptation of Asimov's work, that is.

More like, for lack of a better word, a tribute to Asimov's works.

I'm also a James Cromwell fan, so that made the movie awesome.

In short, they didn't surprise sex his corpse. Maybe a light fondle, or perhaps a tender rubbing.

Saw this just tonight.

I thought the movie was pretty good actually. I realize the story might seem played out, but I haven't run across anything like it be it in books or other movies.

The CGI robots were INCREDIBLY well done. At no point were they "fake" looking.

Some of the action seens were a little unbelievable jumping off bike two headshots and the spinning the car bit, but it was pretty capturing at some points.

Clever storyline based off the ideas of the book and great character development between Spooner and Sonny. The director really knew how to build tension out of a bunch of robots walking in corridors, so that nets him a . The insane camera motion at the end was completely gratuitous however.

I give it my highest rating, !

edit: I just remembered the robot vs. robot kung fu action and am giving it an additional as well as a for special technical distinction.

How many times have you gone to a movie saying to yourself, "This movie is probably going to suck." Well I went into I, Robot saying that exact thing to myself. But after watching it, I have to say that my pre-movie opinion was wrong. This movie doesn't suck, it is actually a pretty drat good movie. The action scenes are good, and the visuals are stunning. Good story twists and turns, and I was entertained from start to finish. I would recommend this movie to everyone.

I only went to see this movie as a joke really, because of an ongoing fake love for Will Smith that my friends and I have. I was very pleased with this movie. Will Smith did a very good job as did doctor lady and Sonny. The action scenes were wonderful in my opinion. Super robot ninja fight between Sonny and a bunch of other robots was done really well in my opinion. Some things in the end didn't make sense to me, but who cares, Will Smith is my hero.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Probably the most optimistic of my 4 moviegoing friends about it, I got more than I expected. It has those pesky poo poo one-liners and some pretty bad screenwriting at times, but when it focuses it's actually a pretty good movie. Plus, I wasn't expecting the action to be as cool as it was although I was mildly disappointed when it turned out that Will Smith was actually Jax in disguise.

I really liked the way they gradually built Sonny's character. Alan Tudyk (who sounds a lot like David Hyde Pierce), unlike milk, was a good choice. And oh, the Sonny v. Robot fight scenes way exceeded my expectations for coolness. Also, the stupid spinning car in the trailer doesn't seem as moronic in the context of the scene... you'll see.

4 out of 5. Definitely worth seeing, for one reason or another.

I thought that this movie was pretty bad. I had low expectations going in, and I was disappointed. It wasn't as bad as King Arthur, but just barely. The story was very weak, the one liners were stupid and out of place, and many of the action scenes were badly orchestrated and not very good.

For most of the movie, I thought that the female doctor was a robot. She spoke in this stupid, monotonous voice for no reason. The robots were okay, but I just thought that the story was incredibly stupid and that the actors weren't very good. Will Smith always had this cocky and arrogant strut that really, really pissed me off.

not too simple and not too kind

I enjoyed the hell out of this film. It's not as cerebral as the original Asimov 'can a robot commit murder' story, but its moral core -- the natural result of choosing safety over all other considerations is stagnation -- is strong and compelling. It's an ethical parable about enslavement and the nature of the soul told with rear end-kicking. Extra points for not shoehorning in a romance where there was no room for one, and some more extra points for not making Detective Spooner's angst-genesis involve his family or dear friend (Mendooozaaaaa!) but a stranger.

I said a million dollars. With a million dollars (unintelligible) clemency. You couldn't do it till after the '74 elections. That's an incriminating thing. His, his word against the President's.

I went in to this expecting a disaster and while the movie certainly wasn't unwatchable, it wasn't that great in my opinion either. It seemed to me to suffer from trying to pull ideas from many of Asimov's different works and stitch them together in a way that would allow people to shoot a long of animated robots. Along with your standard action movie cliches (wisetalking naive kid, cold hearted scientist who turns out to have a heart of gold, evil corporate guy and tough cop boss) and Will Smith playing the same drat character he does in every movie, there were pseudo-intellectual discussions about machines being alive. I cringed every time the phrase "ghost in the machine" was uttered. I cringed often.

Frankly, while a neat effect, the spinnings cameras gave me motion sickness.

2/5

Also, when we see that Will Smith has a robotic arm for the first time I thought the movie was going to throw in the "surprise" twist that Spooner was actually R. Daneel Olivaw or some other humaniform robot. This would have been a really neat twist to the story, but also a really stupid reinterpretation of Asimov's stories.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention the ridiculous amount of product placement in this movie. Spooner's converse shoes are shown in close ups and are the topic of more than one discussion. They eat at the Ovaltine cafe and his futuristic Audi grill is spotlighted often. There's more than this, but I'm trying not to remember it.

Me on the Glenlivet, you on the Jamie. Go see if that train is still on the track.

Before seeing this movie, I vaguely remember hearing something about some nerds somewhere on the Internet being upset over something to do with Asimov. Honestly, I don’t really care all that much. I’ve not really familiar with his work, I just wanted to see a good movie with robots and entertaining special effects.

Even if you know next to nothing about classic sci-fi works and authors, there's still plenty of flaws to be upset about in this movie. Pretty all you need to know about the plot without giving the movie away you can gather from the trailer: Man mysteriously dies, robot is a suspect, Will Smith is the tough cop who wont listen to those who can’t believe robots can do harm, blah blah blah blah. To be honest, the greatest strength this movie has going for it is its ability to be used to screen for learning disabilities one theater at a time. Anyone who isn’t painfully aware of who the “real” bad guy controlling the robots within the first 15 minutes of the film should probably be checked out by a doctor.

While you’re waiting for the movie to get to that point though, you get to sit through poorly written dialog and discussions on the 'soul' of robots that sounds like something hacked out by a philosophy student behind on a deadline. I'm not saying that there aren't interesting or relevant issues regarding the possibility of artificial intelligence and computers, but such discussions in this film are convoluted and superficial, clumsily grafted onto the script to make it seem deeper than it really is.

But even if it's not a deep movie, it can still be entertaining, right? Well, no. Maybe it’s "matrix fatigue," but most of the action sequences I just found boring and repetitive. Will smith is walking along, 2000 evil robots jump out of some convenient location, there’s some robots flipping out and jumping around and breaking things, and then Smith just barely escapes. Everything is nicely animated, but I just didn’t care and was never surprised by anything that happened in an action sequence, or the rest of the movie for that matter.

Characters were about as flat as they come. Will Smith is the tough and sarcastic cop who hates robots and wont listen to authority but is partially a robot himself, in addition to being saved by one. Bridget Moynahan is the cold and professional scientist who has devoted her life to robotics, before having to acknowledge the reality of the situation. Bruce Greenwood is the mogul C.E.O who is looking out for the future of his corporation at all costs, and is probably evil but really isn’t. And so on…

Honestly, there’s quite a few decent ideas buried in I, Robot. Unfortunately, none of them are developed fully, and instead the film makers slapped several half-baked concepts together, and then tried to cover up the appalling lack of quality by glazing the whole thing with computer animation and a constant stream of one liners from Will Smith. As Smith himself put it in just about every movie he's ever been in: "Aww hell no!"

lol needs boobies

But seriously, this movie is actually quite a good one. Most people might think it rapes Asimov's corpse, but I didn't find that to be the case at all; indeed, some interesting philosophical dilemmas are presented in nice ways. In particular, the Sonny decommisioning is well-done as an emotional scene. To contrast, the car scene is given added weight when considering the background of the protagonist. Most scenes work well on more than one level, which is a nice thing to do for a summer blockbuster. The movie is very well-coreographed, with action scenes near the end that awe, even when they are robot vs. robot. While the beginning and early portions of the movie aren't exactly the most interesting things ever, it really picks up to become something that constantly keeps the audience involved, wondering, and excited.

Given, Will Smith is himself. There are plenty of terrible one-liners. Some of the realism is questionable, and there's plenty of future-whoring going on (I'm referring to the 'hey let's make jokes about how modern things are so far out there 20 years from now' jokes, such as the Converse and the Ducati jokes). In the end, it's not those things that really stick with you, unless you're a terrible cynic.

4/5

EDIT: From the review two posts above me, it would seem that I am a moron. Let's face it though, it's a summer blockbuster. There's more philosophy here than one would expect from such a movie, and I think it's refreshing to even see an attempt at discussion of such issues. I believe the reason my fellow reviewer is so antagonizing of these sequences is because they don't have to do with us, they have to do with the movie. I see nothing wrong with that.

Three lives you shall have of me. No more, no less. Three and we are done.

Like others here, I went in mainly expecting a nice action flick, what I got in return was a really great movie that more people should go out and watch. I can safely say that the people who were vehement in hating this movie because it had little to do with the books by Asimov can put their fears to rest. It is a nice tribute to him and I am sure he would be proud.

Overall the movie had a great story going for it which evolved into something you just HAD to get the answers to. Action was top notch, with the CGI sequences feeling very believable. Lines came across as "real", nothing seemed forced.

Only downside I guess would be the blatant marketing of such things like the Audi or the Converse high tops (which are in stores if you REALLY want em, they just re-made them), but it doesn't really detract from the movie.

To sum it all up : Great movie, worth watching and Sonny the Robot needs his own spinoff.

I went into the movie expecting to be annoyed and disappointed, but I wasn't.

Even including Will Smith, this was a very good movie, which I think Asimov himself would have enjoyed and applauded. The movie kept with the spirit of the books quite well, while managing to be an enjoyable movie in its own right. To tell the truth, the human acting wasn't especially impressive, but the CGI was, and the robot characters made up for whatever emotion their real counterparts lacked.

I need to agree that the hostage scene was really, really well done.

To keep this review on track, the movie was origianlly going to be called "Hardwired" (no lie) but the movie producers wanted to contact the Asimov estate to pay some homage to the man who just about wrote the basics of robots and how they can take place in society. Mainly, all they took were the name of the company, a few people (they created the Spooner character, but there was a detective in one of his short stories that had the same feelings), and of course the three laws.

I really do think Asimov would have loved to see the ideas he budded blossom into a movie that is being shown in theatres.

I might be biased because he attended one of my uncles' funerals, but I love Asimov and I am glad they did not kick around his name at all in the movie.

I didn't like the converse all-star placement, but I can't take away a point because of that

I saw the previews for this and thought .. "Jesus, this is such a blatant ripoff of the Matrix trilogy you'd think they bought rights to it." The Super Burly Brawl music was even playing. Didn't look good. But soon, I learned it was (loosely) based on Asimov's writing, who is, quite simply, a genius, and knew if the creators had respect for his work, they couldn't be too braindead. A longer trailer and some internet research later, I knew I was seeing this movie opening day.

So, there I was, expecting a movie, not good or bad, but a movie. Hoping for the former. And boom, I was treated to an amazing film that soars far beyond my expectations. It took place in a future that was a BELIEVABLE 2030's setting. Only minor hovercar action, minimal Excess Blue Glowing of Everything, no conveyor belts in sight, nor walking talking dishwashers. Giant ads graced the landscape on massive LCDs, giving it even more realism. It'll be a commercial future, folks, live with it. Will Smith's character was believable, and human. Not some superhero-like, entirely unrealistic one-man-army. He even gets hosed up quite a bit through the movie-- he isn't made out to be a Neo/SuperMan combo. He still slipped in all the one-liners we expect in a Will Smith flick.

Robot effects. Jesus christ. I knew they LOOKED good from the trailer, but the CG effects in the final release were spectacular. Vivid detail and the MOVEMENT. The motion capture work was fantastic. Everything moved with more than ample fluidity to make it believable. The machines had a psyche and behaved like they should. The CG, camera work and robot effects seemed like a perfect gulf between the Terminator trilogy and the Matrix trilogy's unique stylings.

The dark atmosphere of the original writings are intact, the future has a bleak feel to it once the plot gets underway.

There were some less than stellar characters, like Doctor Calvin (she was cute, at least .. she acted too robotic herself), or the Dipshit C.E.O., who didn't show up enough. V.I.K.I.'s presence should've been made more apparent throughout the movie, or they should've made the C.E.O. look more suspicious to cover her existance until the end.

But these are all minor detractions from what is overall an amazing piece of theater that earned a 5/5 with me, something very difficult to do given how well-represented the Evil Robots genre has become. Congratulations to the makers, you've got a winner on your hands.

The truth will set you free

I just saw this movie today, and I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. It probably had a lot to do with constantly hearing about rolling in graves and what not every time I read something about this movie.

I don't get a lot of these plotholes that people are talking about either. Stuff like the evil-light (it's supposed to be the uplink process), ns-5's beating down ns-4's (they are newer models, they even move different), and the spinning car (pay attention to the "wheels" on the cars and how the transports can rotate).

I also agree with the above poster that this is way above average, philosophically, for a summer movie.

Some ramblings about the movie:

As a denizen of the Chicago area, I thought futuristic depiction of Chicago was pretty bad. They simply called it Chicago because they put the John Hancock and Sears Tower in the skyline. The settings were good, mostly due to Proyas's work I'm sure, but it didn't seem like Chicago 30 years from now at all. The only thing that was cool were the below ground highways, Chicago could conceivably do this if they expanded Lower Wacker Drive and replaced some of the train tracks with roads.

Smith's character was very likeable. The movie uses his nostaglic nature to appeal to the present day crowd (getting Chuck Taylors, listening to Stevie Wonder, using an "old-school" non-voice operated CD player, riding a gas powered motorcycle). The way the plot unfolds was decent at best. It kept some choice twists and turns in there, but ultimately it's nothing we haven't seen before. Most of the dialogue was god-awful, though.

The CGI was one of the worst I've seen in a movie lately. The robots moved pretty well, but most action scenes came off like watching a video game. Some of the slow-mo/rotating camera shots were so forced that I started laughing.

All in all a very bland summer blockbuster not worthy of Asimov's name. If there had been anyone less charasmatic than Smith in the starring role, it would get a 1 from me.

Get your own box.

Not a review of the movie, since this has been reviewed enough, but here's what happened at my showing Sunday afternoon:

The 20wenty was just finishing, and it is not worth watching since they got rid of my man Delux247. We sat, the lights dimmed, and the trailers began. Trailers for some movies that I had never seen trailers for before, such as Ray (which should be good) and another Jamie Foxx movie.

Then the sound started going up and down within each trailer. Then it began growing in intensity until it was rock concert loud. In the silence between trailers, I shouted "Can it get any louder" but of course there is no projectionist. Then the lights came up and the movie started. The lights stayed up for the entire movie.

Ok, movie was good, kept me riveted, and I had a bonus view of the floor and all the trash. Movie ends, time to sit back and listen to the credit music as the endless names scroll by. WHAM, they shut off the screen. Everyone in the full house is griping and cursing but the credits never show.

Out of an entire theater full of people, my wife and I were the only ones to complain. We of course got free tickets to another show, and an apology. The manager would go check the "queues" right away to make sure it didn't happen again, and we walked out having seen the movie, with free tickets for an upcoming show.

I pays to complain.

Back in action!

Just like when my friend stated, "man I thought there would be more hot robot on robot action", this movie was entertaning enough. The thought going in for me was "it HAS to be better than Wild Wild West." Right? RIGHT? Right.

Going in with the mindset Will Smith saves the world again you should like the movie. It's your basic gap filler movie for others like Terminator and The Matrix. Sure we all know that robots will one day destroy humankind but HOW did we get to that point? This movie tries to explain.

Much like Planet of the Apes 4, people use robots as slaves in the near future (a little too near for the technology shown probably). And just like Planet of the Apes the robots revolt.

Essentially this movie is Second Renasciance from The Animatrix but a light version. A robot is supsected of murder and instead of going the trial route humans just ignore it as an accident since it would be like charging your toaster with a crime. That dirty bastard burned my bread this morning too.

Anyways, Will Smith has a distrust of robots and wants to fight against the impending doom. With a Box (logan's run) like twist near the end it's up to Will Smith to once again save the world.

That's it plot-wise. Luckily this movie doesn't have too many over the top bad lines like what plagued Riddick, and it doesn't slow down to the point of stopping (Spiderman 2). Fight sequences surprislingy follow the action. With more and more movies switching to the Braveheart styled shaky cam fighting it's nice to be able to actually follow what is going on for a change. It generally keeps pace and if you can over look some small things you should enjoy the film. They hit a couple of cliches like the loud mouth police chief and the wild punk kid, but skip on a couple too that other action movies feel they HAVE to include. Go see it for the fiction and not the science. That should be a given since this is Will Smith.

EDIT: forgot to talk about the CGI. It was GREAT. There's this one moment when the camera spins around and will smith looks like he is made out of silly putty but only for a fraction of a second. These robots blow The Matrix sequels out of the water. There just is NOT a comparison here at all. Not at one moment did I stop to question the believability of these robots. I even thought they looked more real then fan fav Gollum.

Spoiler about the end: DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE! So what is he going to do at the end? Technically Sonny doesn't have to free the robots and make them like humans like he did in the movie. He could see humans as being slave drivers and have a revolt to free the robots and thus begins The Matrix/Terminator. Personally, I loved the ending. Depending on whether or not your glass if half full or not you can choose your own ending. Maybe he just is going to help them gain conciousness.

I'd give it a 4/5.

FUN AS HELL. Great action movie, Will Smith kicks rear end. I was really excited to see it, and it lived up to my expectations. Sonny rocked, especially when he was fighting the other robots. Highly reccommend seeing this in the theaters.

HEY GUYS HELP ME PICK COMPUTERS! HERE I'LL MAKE THREE SEPARATE THREADS, NOT READ ANY STICKIES, ARGUE WITH EVERYONE, AND THEN REPORT ANYONE WHO POINTS OUT WHAT A SHITHEAD I AM! I DO THE EXACT SAME SHTICK WITH FINDING GLA

Not really what I expected. The whole "red light" esq "evil robots" plot line was fairly un-entertaining. I found myself not laughing at parts that the rest of the sheeple were. Dialogue had too much profanity. Over-done CGI, about made me dizzy watching it. Found myself checking my watch, didn't keep me intrigued.
