Two arms of the galaxy with The Empire on Orion and the FPA on Sagittarius. To put it in a bit of prospective it'd be about 3000 light years from the solar system to Sagittarius and closest star system is 11 light years away.

What's this Mutineer Gaiden that CA recently released? I thought Spiral Labyrinth was the only other OVA for LOGH.
I believe it's Spiral Labyrinth 15-18.

Because in that case, couldn't you just telecine that at higher resolution?
This is what people normally mean when they say remaster. Though you can have something like Dragon Ball Z where the reels and other materials are lost and you have to upscale and/or redraw scenes.

ANN - Legend of the Galactic Heroes Global Net Game Licensed posted:

The Japanese online game company GameOn announced on Monday that it licensed the global rights to adapt Yoshiki Tanaka's Legend of the Galactic Heroes novel series into a browser-based online game. The space opera epic follows the conflict between the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance, as well as the personal stories of Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the Alliance's Yang Wen-Li. GameOn's development and distribution license is worldwide, and the company intends to run the tentatively titled Legend of the Galactic Heroes Online game not only in Japan, but throughout the world.

Since Tanaka launched the series in November of 1982, the 10 main novel volumes and four side-story volumes have sold 15 million copies and earned him a Seiun Award. Director Noboru Ishiguro (Macross, Orguss, Megazone 23) and his Artland anime studio spent over a decade adapting the novels into a theatrical and video anime franchise with over 100 installments. A stage play will open in Tokyo's Aoyama Theatre next January. Besides Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Tanaka also wrote the original novel inspirations for The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Ryoko's Case File, Sohryuden - Legend of the Dragon Kings, and Tytania anime projects.

Wonder what kind of game it'll be.

I figure this is a good place for this post.

Last month a group called Bluefixer subbed Nana Toshi Monogatari (Seven Cities Story) an OVA based on Tanaka Yoshiki's novel series of the same name.

The set up goes; in the future the earth's axis tilts killing everyone. The colonialists on the moon repopulate the planet and organize a government around seven cities. Everyone on the moon dies from a virus but not before implementing the Olympos-System and set it on auto, a system of laser satellites that will shoot down anything that goes too high in the air. It's apparently good for the next 150 years or so.

You follow, and stop me if you've heard this one before, two genus strategists on opposing sides of a war between two of the cities who win by using daring tactics and are not well liked among their superiors.

Directed by Mamoru Kanbe(Elfen Lied).

If you've got an hour to kill and you like naval warfare and sci-fi go for it it's good. The only problem is there are five novels and the OVA only covers the first.

Is there any other anime series that is so quotable?

As I've watched more of the series, I've become more and more curious about how it was translated. Is there any resource for reading about stuff like that?
First Gundam probably.

Since it was fan subbed there isn't really any kind of resource about the translation but it probably wouldn't hurt to get in touch with Central Anime and ask a few questions.

Arming millions with guns that fire flechette rounds in addition to the laser guns that work well enough most of the time seems incredibly costly. Then there's the whole "unwieldy medieval monstrosities" bit, none of the axes in the show look that unwieldy. In fact there seems to be quite a bit of fineness that goes into it. The weapon themselves are another example of the two sides different design philosophies. Ornate double headed battle axes on the Imperial side while the other has utilitarian tomahawks.

More than likely nearly everything you watch and like that is aired on TV is just that. Out side of Gundam, shonen adaptations, little kids shows and family fare there is very little anime that isn't 11pm to 5am programing. Everything from GitS:SAC to Kaiba.

It's the guns. A little before the series starts all the smaller ships used a less powerful cannon type, later the smaller ships were refitted with the stronger type when the tech minimized enough. The cannons themselves are the size they are because the massive distances in effect where the battles take place.

LoGH ships are the size they are to hold the cannons they use and they don't bother armoring them too much since it'd cost too much. If you take a hit that doesn't glance off your shields (you see this happen in a few episodes there's two layers one for weaker laser fire and one for the stronger beams from other ships) the cannons will punch through anything you can afford to slap on. Phisical armor mostly debris, missiles and fighters. Unless it's an admiral's flagship which can take a few shots before going down but they're usually at lest twice the size of normal battleships, cruisers, gunboats and destroyers. The exception being the experimental imperial ships that started to come out like Brunhild (which was built ignoring production costs) and Perceval which were new designs made to take cannon fire head on and survive through deflection. Showing that technology and design was catching up with the fire power ships were bringing to bear.

Also the ships already minimize their profile by having all cannons in the front. Showing your broadside in LoGH is really dangerous.

Long story short. They can't make the ships any smaller.

Fullmetal Alchemist's Arakawa to Adapt Tanaka's Arslan Fantasy posted:

The June issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine is announcing on Thursday that manga artist Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, Hero Tales) is drawing an adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan (Arslan Senki), the acclaimed fantasy novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka (Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Sohryuden - Legend of the Dragon Kings, Tytania). The manga series will launch in the magazine's August issue on July 9.

The ongoing novel series, billed by Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine as the "world's greatest historical fantasy," already inspired two anime films and a four-part original video anime from 1991 to 1993. Central Park Media, who released the anime in North America, describes the story:

As an unnaturally heavy mist descends on the battlefield, King Andragoras and his most valued officers confer among the bodies of dead and dying soldiers. When Daryoon, a young but highly skilled officer, voices his reluctance to send men into battle under these conditions, the king, unstable and enraged, banishes him.

Now, Daryoon's new mission is to insure the safety of the King's only son, Prince Arislan. Daryoon and Prince Arislan set off on a quest of their own, but they can't succeed alone. They must convince both the Lord Narsus and his companion, the archer Elam, to join them in their quest to somehow help the soldiers win the war.

Now a group of only six they must somehow overcome an enemy of 300,000 soldiers! These unlikely soldiers have fate on their side, so anything can happen!

The 13-volume novel series also inspired an earlier manga series by Chisato Nakamura. Similarly, Tanaka's Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Sohryuden, Yakushiji Ryōko no Kaiki Jikenbo, and Tytania novels all inspired both anime and manga.
