Directed by: Bob Fosse Starring: Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Leland Palmer Womanizing, chain-smoking, pill-popping, alcoholic workaholic musical director examines his life during a medical crisis. A favorite of mine for a long time, though not without faults. I think the whole "Air-otica" scene ("it's the best drat work you've ever done") is boring and overlong. And Leland Palmer (Audrey) is just too darn fugly. Minor quibbles, though. The worst thing you could say about it is that it's incredibly egotistical, but that's balanced out by a heaping dose of self-deprecation. RATING: 4.5 PROS: unique, dazzling, entertaining and moving CONS: Fosse's ego ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0078754/

Wow, I was just thinking of buying this on DVD. The idea of a director making his or her own autobiographical film doesn't sound too appealing, but Fosse mixes enough honesty in with the showbiz to make it work. Roy Scheider seems like an odd choice for the role (has he been in any other musicals?), but he actually does pretty well, maybe his best performance on film. The austentious sets and musical numbers are balanced out by the personal, incredibly uncomfortable dramatic scenes. One of my favorite films of all time.
