Should I be worried that my video drivers crash and restart 2 or 3 times a month? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, the monitor just turns off and comes back on with a message about them crashing. It happened while gaming once or twice but most of the time I'm just browsing the web or digging around in folders when it happens.

No, just an old box from 2006 running Windows 7

I would first try some condensed air to clean out the fans. If it's still happening try swapping the video card out and see if that helps.

A lot of people (myself included) have had this problem with NVidia cards and Windows 7. A driver update seemed to fix it, but definitely check for overheating too.

If it's an old 2006 box it might be using an ancient card with WDM drivers, in which case a driver crash may be unavoidable. More likely, the videocard's probably clogged with dust and forcing driver resets.Bardeh posted:I've got a Clevo P150HMx laptop, with a 6990M GPU. Recently, the GPU died - I started getting weird artifacting and blank screens, until eventually Windows wouldn't boot at all if AMD drivers were installed. I can boot with default VGA drivers, which is OK for browsing and emails etc, but ideally I want to do something about this graphics card.

I vaguely recall a lot of posts about a set of NVidia drivers that kept crashing and throwing "driver has stopped and recovered" messages. Maybe do some poking around on Google for your particular version and try updating/rolling back as appropriate. If it's only happening every couple of weeks it might take awhile to see if anything has changed though...

Are all brands of SD/SDHC cards basically the same? I imagine so, but if there were any brands that it turns out are notoriously lovely I'd rather avoid them.

What are you trying to do, capture video on a camera, write to one so you can use it in a Raspberry Pi...? The thing to watch out for is you could unknowingly buy counterfit cards. The wrong size or junk quality memory in the packaging of a reputable brand name. i just stick to Sandisk and reputable vendors.

I recently put in a new CPU cooler, and after rewiring everything my motherboard doesn't seem to want to start up. Pressing the power button causes all the fans to spin up and for the motherboard LED to activate, everything will run for a few seconds, and then the system will power down, and repeat that cycle a few times. Does this sound like a typical issue?

Did you make sure you plugged that second motherboard power lead back in?

Yep, got both of them.

Your board is probably shutting down to protect itself because it doesn't think there's a working CPU fan installed. Did you plug it into a case fan header by accident?

Well, it's plugged into a socket labeled CPU_FAN, so I hope that's the right place. The fan is a Cooler Master 212, if that helps? e: so it seems to run fine if I unplug my GPU, which is really drat weird, and pretty unhelpful, since my motherboard doesn't otherwise output graphics. Is there a reason to expect a borked GPU shutting down the entire system? DerLeo fucked around with this message at May 22, 2013 around 06:05 |

LCD Deathpanel posted:Is the laptop still under warranty? The 6990M is a fairly recent model, so you can probably just yell at Clevo about it. Nope, it's out of warranty. I bought it through a reseller (PCSpecialist.co.uk) and my warranty with them for parts was only a year. I've had the laptop for about a year and a half. I've seen lots of posts around the internet recently dated saying that their 6990M has died in much the same way as mine. The card always ran hot no matter what I did (always used it on a cooling stand, did a repaste), but everything I read said that these high-end laptop GPU's were designed to run hot. But considering how much the laptop cost, a year and a half just isn't good enough. I can get a GTX 560M for 150 GBP on Ebay, and it looks like that should work fine. It's a slight downgrade from the 6990M, but should still suit my needs fine. If I were to buy this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NVIDIA-Ge...=item20cc73f873 Would it come with a heatsink? Or will I just be able to use the heatsink I already have with it?

It's possible your power supply can't handle both the card and the new fan. Pulling the video card also makes the motherboard move slightly, so if it works now there could be a short between the board and the case.

Ok, just put together a cheap Mini ITX System with these primary components: Sugo SG05 Lite Silverstone SFX 450wt PSU Edit: Whoops, motherboard is an MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 And the CPU, a 100watt A8-5600K running at 3.6ghz. Video card is just a temporary low profile 7750, will be upgrading soon - but first I have to solve the heat issue. CPU heat temps are insane. I'm using the stock cooler, but didn't think they would be this bad even with that. Idling at 55c, load gets up to 72 and of course creates a monster racket as the CPU fan spins up to 5000RPM. Basically unusable at load currently. Checked the seating and it looks fine. So, any other SG05 owners here? What aftermarket CPU cooler can I reliably fit in this case and not block the PCIe slot? Silverstone's website claims you have 82mm of vertical space for a heatsink. Check this list for one fitting your needs (sub 2U, 75mm tall or less), source a few different heatsinks, and do some rough guesstimating with a ruler to make sure it doesn't interfere with your PCI-E slot. Most of the sinks on that list are reviewed on a 125W synthetic heat source, so the numbers you get should be a bit better, with decent case fans.

Looks like one of my externals is failing, so I need to get a new high volume drive for file storage (media, raw photos, video, etc). What are some of the best buys in terms of space/reliability/low price? I need something 3tb or higher, or at whatever price point I get the most storage space per dollar. It can be an external, or some kind of internal+enclosure combo.
